Binding otherwise square and tight; interior clean and unmarked except for a discreet early-owner signature ("Neu Freeman / von H. Aufzug 49") on the front pastedown. Boards modera…tely toned with mild edge wear and some faint foxing, typical of the fragile Piper-Bücherei paper stock. Pages evenly toned but supple, plates sharp and unmarred. A well-preserved example of a scarce Piper artist monograph from the immediate post-war years. Mac Zimmermann (1912-1995), the German surrealist painter and printmaker closely associated with the Fantastic Realism movement. Contains a series of intricate pen-and-ink drawings executed between 1947 and 1948, accompanied by a brief interpretive essay by the art historian Bernhard Degenhart. Complete with the original publisher's printed promotional slip for the Piper-Bücherei series, listing this title and related artist volumes (Barlach, Beckmann, Munch, Picasso, Toulouse-Lautrec). Such ephemeral inserts are seldom retained and enhance the completeness and provenance appeal of this copy.
