Add to basketCondition: Original folds, near fine. A letter appointing Miss T. Steinberg of Brooklyn to a seven-member committee responsible for organizing the participation of Young Judaea in a Zionist membership campaign. Issued a few months after the formation of the Zionist Organization of America, the letter documents efforts to incorporate the country's existing Jewish youth organizations into the rapidly expanding national Zionist movement. Lipsky writes: "Steps have been taken to enlist the services of all leaders, workers and senior members of Young Judaea in the Zionist Membership campaign in which we are about to engage. The success of the campaign is closely bound up with the extent of Young Judaea's participation in it. For this reason, we are anxious to muster all available Young Judaea forces in this undertaking. It gives me pleasure to appoint you as one of the committee of seven, which shall have general direction of the Young Judaea division of the campaign in your district. We hope that you will not begrudge this obligation and that you will do your very utmost to make this endeavor fully successful." The letter concludes with instructions to attend an organizational meeting at the ZOA's New York headquarters on October 18, where the purposes and extent of the campaign would be explained. Young Judaea had been established in 1909 to promote Zionism and Jewish cultural education among American Jewish youth. In June 1918, the Federation of American Zionists and several affiliated organizations, including Young Judaea and Hadassah, were consolidated into the Zionist Organization of America. The new organization was led by Julian W. Mack, with Louis D. Brandeis serving as honorary president. The letterhead lists Brandeis, Mack, Stephen S. Wise, Harry Friedenwald, and other prominent figures in the American Zionist movement. Lipsky, who would later become president of the ZOA, was serving as Secretary for Organization. The appointment of Steinberg to a district leadership committee is an interesting example of the responsibilities assumed by young Jewish women in the movement. The letter also provides a contemporary record of the ZOA's efforts to mobilize Young Judaea's membership during the final weeks of the First World War, as the Balfour Declaration of November 1917 had given new momentum to the campaign for a Jewish "national home" in Palestine. . Typed letter signed by Louis Lipsky, Secretary for Organization, on illustrated Zionist Organization of America letterhead. One page, 11 x 8 ½ inches. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, 6½ x 3½ inches, with postal markings and manuscript notations.…

Contact seller5-star sellerFirst edition. Original paper wrappers, 8vo, 7 pages, 22 cm. In Yiddish. Title translates as "About the Bund in Poland: Facts and Figures in Connection with the Attack of the Poale Tsiyon on the Jewish Workers' Committee." Published by the Bundishn klub in New York, established in 1923 as an organization which would support the work of the Bund in Poland materially and ideologically. This pamphlet covers the organization's historical feud with Poale Tsion, the Marxist Zionist political party within Poland. "The rapid development of socialist movements in Russia and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Bund's emphatic rejection of Zionism in 1901, and the Russian Revolution of 1905 hastened the consolidation of disparate Labor Zionist groups into an organized movement. These groups rejected the view of the Bund's founders that socialism and democracy sufficed to solve the Jewish problem and stressed that only a territorial base in Palestine could allay the economic marginality and abnormality of Diaspora Jewry. In Russia in 1906, [Ber] Borokhov founded the Jewish Social Democratic Workers Party-Po'ale Tsiyon. This party followed his 'prognostic Zionism,' outlined in the 1906 pamphlet 'Nasha platforma' (Our Platform) that stressed the role of objective socioeconomic factors and crises rather than Jewish nationalism and pioneering zeal in establishing a Jewish territorial base in Palestine (Borokhov himself later changed his views and embraced the "principled" Zionism that 'Nasha platforma' rejected)." (YIVO) SUBJECT(S): Socialism. Jewish socialists. OCLC: 122989580. OCLC locates only 3 copies worldwide (YIVO, Harvard, NYBC), none outside the Northeast. Add to basket8vo. 66, (2) pp. Original printed wrappers. Scarce Zionist youth movement booklet describing the experience of a summer camp in British Mandate era Palestine, likely to a kibbutz. The kibbutz movement had a long connection with European Jewish youth groups, and such visits would have been encouraged. Such kibbutzim - largely in the form of communal agricultural settlements, though they would later include other industries such as factories - would go on to play a large role in the Zionist movement and the partition of Palestine a decade later. - The booklet is illustrated with four maps, titled "Map of our trip to the sources of the Jordan and the Naftali Mountains", "the Land of Israel in the days of the First Temple", "the Land of Israel in the days of the Second Temple", and one which labels the "mandate area" and "the territory of the proposed Jewish state". - Wrappers somewhat worn, otherwise in good condition. - OCLC 53243596.…

Add to basketA key document of early Zionist history - the official protocol of the First Zionist Congress in Bazel. The publication of Herzl's 'The Jewish State' in 1896 provided the blueprint for modern Zionism. Later, the World Zionist Movement became the force to drive the practical issues and implement Herzl's plan. The Congress was the Parliament of the Zionist Movement and the first Jewish representative political assembly. The first Zionist Congress held on the 29-31 of August 1897 was a landmark in Zionist and Jewish History, and one of the seminal moments in modern Jewish history.
