[Elzevir is the name of the celebrated family of Dutch booksellers, publishers, and printers of the 17th and early 18th centuries. The duodecimo series of "Elzevirs" have become very famous and very desirable among bibliophiles. Although it appears the family was involved with the book trade as early as the 16th century, it is only known for its work in some detail beginning with Lodewijk Elzevir (also called Louis). The family ceased printing in 1712. All three volumes offered here show the famous Elsevir "Tree" printers trademark, as can be clearly seen in our second Image]. (P.S. A scarce printing of the works of Tacitus. VOLUME II ONLY. The House of Elzevir was an influential Dutch family of printers and booksellers active from approximately 1583 to 1712. Rising to prominence in the early 17th Century, they are best remembered starting with the printed works of Lodewijk (Louis) Elzevir (c. 1540-1617), along with pieces produced by his son, Bonaventura (1583-1652), and other pieces by Abraham (1592-1652), and Isaac (1596-1651). Among the most prominent and sought-after works are Two New Sciences by Galileo, who was suppressed by religious authorities at the time, and The Republics, a series of geographical and historical accounts of individual European countries that are considered a forerunner to modern travel guides. Elzevir family members also produced finely bound duodecimo (12mo) editions, which are additionally sought after by bibliophiles. A wonderful piece for restoration and preservation.

Condition: Buono (Good). 0. Cm. 14,5, pp. (40) 373 (1).
