Octavo, black cloth & charcoal boards (hardcover), gilt letters, uncut, 275 pp. Fine in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: In his first collection since The Stories of Ray Bradbury was published in 1980, consolidating his immense reputation, he displays anew the unclassifiable magic of his storytelling. most of these twenty-three tales begin in the familiar rooms and landscapes of our lives, in our common thoughts and memories -- and then take off through the farthest reaches of the imagination. Bardbury holds us enthralled as each story unfolds. in the title story, the world's only time-traveler -- renowned for his famous journey into the future -- finally decides, 100 years after the event, to reveal his secret. in "Lafayette, Farewell," an old man's haunting memory of World War I seems to conjure up a shower of ghostly parachutists. a man returns to his boyhood home in "The Thing at the Top of the Stairs," and learns the chilling reason for his childhood fear of the dark. in "on the Orient, North," a ghost is given new life by a particularly perceptive trained nurse. in "I Suppose You are Wondering Why We Are Here?" a man learns from his parents (Twenty years dead) the inescapable truth about himself. in "The Love Affair," a last lonely Martian is prepared to face his doom in return for the sound of music and the hope of companionship. in "Colonel Stonesteel's Genuine Home-made Truly Egyptian Mummy," two residents of Green Town discover how to ward off boredom forever. In story after story we are astonished and charmed as the fantastic and the unexpected are revealed in hidden facets of the real. The Toynbee Convector is quintessential Bradbury. Literature, Fiction, Anthology, Short Story. yslic.

Octavo, khaki cloth & white boards (hardcover), gilt letters, x, 250 pp + [iii] pp. Very Good, with light edgewear, in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: This is the first book-length study to use Spanish language sources in documenting the original Indian inhabitants of west Florida who, from the late sixteenth century to the 1440s, lived to the west and north of the Apalachee. Previous authors who studied the forebears of Creeks and Seminoles from the Chattahoochee Valley have relied exclusively on English sources dating from the second half of the eighteenth century, with the exception of John R. Swanton, who had limited access to Spanish records for his classic works from 1922 to 1946. In this history of the region's Native Americans, Hann focuses on the small tribes of WEst Florida -- Amacano, Chine, Chacato, Chisca, and Pansacola -- and their first contacts with Spanish explorers, colonists, and missionaries. He also gives significant perspective to the forebears of the Lower Creeks, with an emphasis on the late seventeenth century, when Spanish documents recorded the important events of the interior region os of the Southeast. As Hann's fifth study of Florida natives, this book includes chapters on the Yamasee War and its aftermath and the early eighteenth-century dissolution of many societies and withdrawal of Spaniards from the region. This volume will be of great interest to archaeologists working in the lower Southeast, historians and ethnohistorians specializing in Native American or Spanish colonial history, Latin American and Caribbean scholars concerned with Spanish colonial contexts, and anyone interest d in Native Americans or Florida history.
