Paperback. Condition: New. In an intriguing and original style, these authors offer a rich resource for understanding the history, process, and value of feminist consciousness-raising for teachereducators and feminist teachers. Critical incidents in today's classrooms involving values relativism, the rush to judgement, witnessing to vulnerability, cyber-bullying, and countering determinism in teacher education and research are analyzed using key concepts from philosophers and feminist theorists. Weaving together personal narrative, dramatization, literary allusion, and philosophical reconstruction, the authors examine and question the place of the personal in the teacher's ethical responsibility for moral deliberation in pluralistic classrooms. This book is of tremendous value for teacher-educators engaged in helping pre-service teachers develop the critical and sensitive capacities needed to be the voice of authority in a classroom. The ethical questions that are raised have repercussions for teaching professional ethics in other caregiving professions. Going to the heart of the teacher's worst fears and assumptions, this unique work offers a new approach to the analysis of case studies in philosophy of education.Published in English.

Paperback. Condition: New. The Academic Gateway: Understanding the Journey to Tenure investigates the experiences of professors employed in tenure-track positions who are starting their career within a university environment, but have not yet attained the affirmation and permanence that tenure offers. The role that they have taken on entails the preparation of students within a professional school. Some of them have very limited professional experience, while others bring multiple years of experience with them in their transition to a faculty of education. The contributors speak to the three key components of their faculty role: teaching, service, and research. Addressing organizational structures and differences relative to prior roles, they examine how these changes have assisted, confused or altered the way they conduct their day-to-day work. They speak about relevant prior experiences, the preparation they received through graduate school, and the details of the learning curve as they entered into their tenure track role. Have they been successful? The reader will experience the same uncertainty and anticipation every professor goes through during their journey to tenure. This approach amplifies the realism of not knowing whether issues that are spoken about will ultimately be overcome and enhances the validity of their experiences by not biasing the contributions towards those who expect success.

Paperback. Condition: New. Tenure is a pivotal decision for the academy. If it is earned it provides security and permanence, creating further academic freedom to pursue research and interests important to the institution and to society. If it is not earned then the peer review process provides clarification for why it has not being earned. Beyond the Academic Gateway: Looking back on the Tenure-Track Journey brings together lived experiences of academics around the time of the tenure decision. The authors in this book explore the complex relationship between academics, the academy as an ideal, and universities as an enactment of that ideal. Personal growth is evident and shows diversity of experience, as the maturing relationships with the role and workplace unfurl. Where tenure-track is a very personal journey, the period around tenure is necessarily a form of engagement with peers. Yet it has challenges, particularly in a milieu where academic freedom is being nurtured. Individual authors negotiate their choices between their personal objectives and institutional mandates and policies. Simultaneously, after years in the tenure-track, they continue to be evolving as academics, whether through personal growth or by seeking changes in the academy itself. While the book is stand-alone, it was written by the same scholars who wrote about their tenure-track experiences in The Academic Gateway, making the pair of books a remarkable longitudinal collection.Part of the Lives in the Canadian Academic Landscape series.

Paperback. Condition: New. This book counters the cultural homogenization of global policy. It examines the integrity of teacher education in particular places, serving particular communities, at particular historical moments. In this collection, Canadian scholars articulate a response to their collective concerns about the impact of global policy on teacher education, provoking a far-reaching dialogue about teacher education in and for our times. The first two decades of the new millennium have witnessed unprecedented appraisal, analysis, and educational policy formulations related to teaching (K-12) across the Western world. In turn, teacher education has been greatly impacted, as governments around the world see the reform and management of teacher education as a key component in restructuring education toward greater economic competitiveness. The result has been an unwarranted and undesirable level of standardization. It is vital to the future of teacher education, and concomitantly public education, that we imagine alternatives to the homogenization of the educational experience that globalizing policies install. What is needed are vocabularies that enable educators and teacher educators to discern and articulate educational purposes beyond capital and which focus on the kinds of educational experiences that can help prepare the young to lead good and worthwhile lives. Using lessons learned from the Canadian context, the authors identify and investigate the importance of initial and continuing professional education that fosters teachers' intellectual freedom and study; advances an informed and critical appreciation of civic particularity and historical circumstance; and cultivates ethical (i.e., pedagogical) engagement with ideas and histories-teachers' own and their students-as crucial themes of teacher education globally. Paperback. Condition: New. A comprehensive and original study that demonstrates the significance and pertinence of the scholarship of George Grant for teaching today. William F. Pinar presents a comprehensive and original study that demonstrates the significance and pertinence of the scholarship of George Grant for teaching today. While there are studies of Grant's political philosophy, there has been no sustained study of his teaching. Pinar not only draws upon the collected works; he has also consulted Grant's PhD thesis at Oxford, as well as the philosopher's biography, collected letters, and the vast secondary literature. What emerges is a treatise that reveals Grant's timeliness and his prescience in identifying and critiquing key educational issues nearly half a century ago, from academic vocationalism and educational technology to privatization and the ascendency of research-issues that are eminently relevant today. Beyond the classroom, Grant's concerns extended to the impact of economic globalization which, he feared, would erase distinctive national histories and cultures. As such, Grant foresaw the current issues of right-wing populism, notably in the UK and the US, as reactions against these historical tendencies. This volume is destined to become an indispensable reference work for students of Grant in particular and for students of education in general. Published in English.
