Da wird der Kreter von unwiderstehlicher Liebe zu einem Mädchen, Eriboia, gepackt, und er berührt sie an der Wange. Auf ihren Hilferuf hin entspinnt sich ein heftiges Wortgefecht zwischen Theseus und Minos, der schließlich den Athener dazu auffordert, seine Abstammung von Poseidon und damit seine Ebenbürtigkeit mit ihm, dem Zeus-Sohn, dadurch zu beweisen, daß er den Ring, den er ins Meer werfe, aus der Tiefe zurückhole. Ohne zu zögern springt Theseus in die See. Von Delphinen wird er in den Palast seines göttlichen Vaters gebracht. Im Megaron wird er von seiner Stiefmutter Amphitrite empfangen und mit einem purpuren Gewand sowie dem Schleier beschenkt, den die Göttin einst von Aphrodite zur Hochzeit erhalten hatte. Unter dem Glanz dieser Geschenke und dem Jubel der Athener taucht Theseus wieder beim Schiff auf.
