Couverture souple. Condition: Comme neuf. Edition originale. Paris , 2015. 1 Volume/1. -- Comme Neuf -- Broché cousu. Format in-4°( 28 x 21,8 cm )( 510 gr ). ------ 149 pages. ********************** "" This book is a study of the pre-Islamic passages of Abu Hanifa Ahmad ibn Dawud ibn Wanand Dinawari's Kitab al-Akhbar al-Tiwal. It is intended for scholars of Late Antiquity. Special emphasis is placed on Dinawari's exposition of the rule of the Sasanian dynasty and questions relating to the mysterious Khudaynama tradition which are intimately connected with it. Beginning with a discussion of Dinawari and his work, the book moves into a discussion of indigenous Iranian historiography. Speculation on the sources of Kitab al-Akhbar al-Tiwal follows, and the historiographical investigation of the most substantial portion of Kitab al-Akhbar al-Tiwal's notices on the Sasanian dynasty comes next. The findings of the book are set out in a narrative of Sasanian history at the end. This book was written with one main question in mind: what does Dinawari's Kitab al-Akhbar al-Tiwal have to say about pre-Islamic Iranian history? A host of other questions arose immediately: who was Dinawari; when did he live; what did he do; how was his work perceived by others; where did Dinawari get his information and how did he present it; is Dinawari's information reliable ? First Edition. 180 pp., Arabic text, titles in French and Arabic, publisher's original wrappers, soiled covers and rubbed edges, spine professionally repaired, unopened, upper and lower covers glued to endpapers, pages slightly browned; otherwise copy in general good condition- A presentation copy signed by the author and dated 1868. A rare Arabic book printed in Algeria during the colonial period. The Arabic was used in Algeria under the July Monarchy and the Second Empire. The occupation authorities, who were particularly anxious to have competent interpreters, chose to encourage the dissemination of the Arabic language among the French and, at the same time, that of the French language among the Arabs. In addition to the creation of language courses and schools, the French authorities provided aid for the publication of textbooks: until 1840, all Arabic works published in Algiers came out of the presses of the Government Printing Office and, in the 1850s, a small number received financial support from the War Department in the form of subscriptions. The composition of reference works was also encouraged and thus was published, in the Moniteur de l'Algérie, on December 20, 1852, a ministerial decree instituting two prizes of 5,000 francs each, intended to reward authors of French-Arabic and Arabic-French dictionaries, as there were hardly any. A commission met two years later, but no prizes were given. This manual entitled in Arabic As-Sira al-Saniyya fi Akhbar Muluk al-Dawla al-Saniyya al- Faransawiya, was published under the supervision of Auguste Martin. The text is a chronological history of the kings of France and their reigns; it was financed by the Ministry of War. It should be noted that the period from the early conquest of Algeria in 1830 until 1870 witnessed a spread of Arabic schools and early Arabic printed books under colonial supervision in Algeria. #36058.…

Tétouan, Imprimerie Al-Mahdia 1384 H/1964 apr.J.-C. Al-Fichtali a composé 69 poèmes, comptant 1016 vers.

8vo. XXII, 290, 8 pp. Contemporary full blue cloth with remains of a printed spine title. First edition. Entitled "The Book of Wonder, or the Summary of News of the Maghreb", this is the best-known work of the Moroccan historian 'Abd al-Wahid (1185-1250): a personal and at the same time neutral account of Almohad rule from its foundation to the 13th century, but also of the preceding dynasty of the Almoravids, with a summary of al-Andalus history from the Muslim conquest until 1224. The book is written in a lighthearted spirit with many anecdotes; 'Abd al-Wahid explained that his intention was to inform and entertain the students in a summarized way since academic history books tend to be overly lengthy which can sometimes bore the reader. The work also contains valuable information about 'Abd al-Wahid's contemporary Ibn Rushd (Averroes), whom he may have known personally, as well as information directly taken from the Almohad archives, various princes and accounts of events that the author witnessed. A number of details point to Egypt as the place of writing, and the author himself states that he completed the work on 15 July 1224. Dozy's important edition of the Leyden MS. was republished in 1881. - Corners and spine-ends a little bumped. Occasional quite insignificant foxing; uncut and untrimmed as issued. Provenance: removed from the library of Carberry Tower, the Scottish castle mansion owned by the Elphinstone family from the 1860s to the 1960s, with bookplate and shelfmark to front pastedown. - GAL I, 322. For Dozy's editions of historical texts on the history of Muslim Spain see Fück, p. 182.…

Leather. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Contemporary brown calf lettered gilt on spine with blind tooled decorative elements, marbled boards. Cr. 8vo. (18,5 x 13 cm). In Arabic. 104 p. Slight toning on pages, first and last pages are loosely inserted; a piece is missing from the spine; corners bumped; an old label trace on the spine. Overall, a good copy. Uncommon first edition of this early biographical work on the caliphs, covering their lives from the early Islamic period to the last Abbasid caliph, al-Mu'tasim, who was killed during the Mongol invasion. It constitutes the only abridged volume from Ibn al-Sa'î's twenty-five-volume corpus to have been printed at the renowned Bulaq Press. Some sources, however, note that the work attributed to Ibn al-Sa'î may not be genuinely his. (al-'Azzâwî). Ibn al-Sa'î is thought to have finished his corpus in AH 656 [CE 1258], at the time of the Mongol invasion. The "Mukhtaṣar", which formed its ninth volume, was the only part to be printed at the renowned Bulaq Press centuries later. As of March 2026, OCLC locates four copies in the North American libraries: 13490057 & 1227684739.…

A translation, from the original Arabic, into Latin with notes and commentary, by Edward Pococke, of a key source for Arab culture and history, De origine & moribus Arabum, by Jacobite scholar Gregorius Bar Hebraeus Abu'l-Faraj (ca. 1226-1286). With a sectional title page on B1r: De Arabum populis, eorumque moribus; and a separately dated title page for Pococke's Notes: "Notæ in quibus aliquam-multa quæ ad historiam orientalium" on leaf F1r; pagination and register are continuous. There are sections discussing Proverbs and Authors cited by Abu'l-Faraj. A foundational text in the European study of Arabic literature: "Pococke's attempt to show that far from being a mere ancillary to biblical exegesis, Arabic literature (in the widest sense) was worthy of study in its own right in the same way that classical cultures were. It is his greatest work, and of permanent scholarly value" (ODNB). This text introduced European readership to Arabic history in the pre-Islamic and Islamic periods, and continued to einfluence scholarship into the nineteenth century. It is also the first book printed at Oxford with Arabic characters. ESTC R32029; Wing G2025; Madan, II, 2034, 2002; Fück 173; Zenker 750; not in Smitskamp Old calf, rebacked, red spine label. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The Lifting of Secrets Concerning Forged Reports was written over four hundred years ago by a respected and prolific Meccan savant of Afghan origin. Mulla Ali al-Qari (d. 1014/1605) was thoroughly familiar with the large body of critical literature on hadith forgery, which he refined and reordered alphabetically into 625 entries. Al-Qari's last work, it is the only catalogue of forgeries with both a transmission-based and content-based critique, illustrating the author's vast erudition as well as his lenient choices in hadith methodology and his classic Hanafi and Sufi views. The translator has added his own study of the forgery and "famous hadith" genres, the life and works of the author, extensive footnotes and exhaustive indices. A total of 3,000 reports are documented in this volume covering doctrinal and juridical forgeries, Shia forgeries, Sufi forgeries, racial forgeries, misogynistic forgeries, food forgeries, "Israelite" forgeries, medical forgeries, sex forgeries, spurious books, spurious grave-spots and more. This is the first and long overdue authentic reference work on hadith forgeries in English. 1. Hadith-Criticism, interpretation, etc.-Early works to 1800. 2. Hadith-Forgeries. I. Haddad, Gibril Fouad, 1960- . II. Title. III. Title: Qari, The Lifting of Secrets Concerning Forged Reports. IV. Title: Qari, The Major Book of Forgeries. V. Title: Qari, al-Mawdu'at al-kubra.
