Hardcover. Original sketch of a goldfinch by renowned folk artist Mary B. Tucker, inside a Boston-area album amicorum with entries primarily from the late 1830s and 1840s. Printed by J. C. Riker, the partially disbound album, with boards and some pages detached, includes five engraved plates with tissue guards. The rest of the album filled with 58 pages of poems, writings, and sketches to the owner, Mary White, composed by her friends and acquaintances. Mary B. Tucker (1824-1898), whose known artistic work was entirely composed in the decade before her marriage in 1847, has recently received significant critical and collecting interest for her portraiture, having achieved a price of $87,500 for a pair of portraits sold by Sotheby's in 2014. The present sketch of the goldfinch is signed by Tucker following a lengthy passage also written in her hand, dated November 20, 1847, and together occupying an entire page in the album. Her entry is accompanied by entries from both her father and mother, with her mother's also featuring an attractive floral bordering. The collection of all three together adds to the small amount of biographical information presently known about Tucker, and situates her and her family among the social milieu of Boston in the late 1840s. Petits manques de cuir sur les contreplats de la chemise, étui fragile, sinon très bel et unique exemplaire comprenant, au total, 73 oeuvres originales : manuscrites ou artistiques. René Gas (1896-1963) était et reste un homme de l'ombre, sur lequel on dispose de peu d'informations. On sait cependant qu'il a d'abord travaillé au sein des éditions Georges Crès et Cie. En 1925, il prend la co-direction, avec Camille Sauty, de cette maison dont il conserve le nom et l'esprit. Mais la société affronte des difficultés financières si importantes qu'elles entraînent sa faillite en 1935. Vers la fin des années 1940, on retrouve René Gas chez Rombaldi, comme directeur de collection : il s'occupe notamment de celle qui rassemble les « maîtres de l'estampe française contemporaine », publiant de luxueux albums. Les liens tissés au fil de sa carrière, tant avec des écrivains qu'avec de nombreux artistes, l'ont probablement incité à se lancer dans le marché de l'art : devenu directeur de la galerie André Maurice, sise au 140 boulevard Haussmann à Paris, il expose des ?uvres de Jean Marchand, Charles Camoin, Henry E. Burel, Lucien Mainssieux, etc.

Hardcover. Manuscript album amicorum and notebook of Jane Means Appleton Pierce (1806-1863), future First Lady of the United States, begun while studying at Miss Catherine Fiske's Young Ladies Seminary in Keene, New Hampshire in 1821, and continuing until the year prior to her marriage to future President Franklin Pierce in 1834. 156 pages, 103 with text, primarily in Pierce's hand, with various ephemeral material laid in, including a watercolor sketch, newspaper cuttings, a page of labeled plant pressings from Brunswick, Maine, and inserted sheets comprising an additional 11 pages of manuscript material. In worn marbled paper boards, with ownership signature of Pierce as Jane M. Appleton to front pastedown. An extraordinary record of the reading and notes of future First Lady Jane Pierce prior to her marriage to Franklin Pierce, with dates ranging between 1821-1833. The manuscript includes over 100 pages in Pierce's handwriting, including what may be a small quantity of her original poetry. Composed largely of material copied from books and contemporary periodicals, the manuscript provides substantial insight into Pierce's education and intellectual life by providing a chronicle of her reading interests, especially her youthful focus on death and mortality, including a transcription of Susan Huntington's poem "On the Death of an Infant Son," a theme which would take on significance later in Pierce's life. In addition to the material in Pierce's hand, the beginning of the notebook served as her album amicorum while a student in Keene, encompassing approximately 15 pages, includeing a dedication from Eleanor Marion Kinzie, one of the first settlers of present-day Chicago, and an attractive floral watercolor from Salluca Abbott. Among the roughly fifty poems that Pierce includes in the manuscript are six poems which may be her own compositions. This bookseller has been able to track and record all other pieces included in Pierce's hand, and a full itemized list of all pages with text in the journal is available on request. The current manuscript is previously unknown to scholarship, and provides substantial biographical background to the early life of one of the least studied First Ladies. Signed by Author(s).

Condition: Good. [ff] 25 Oblong album, missing rear cover, with the calligraphic ownership inscription on behalf of ten year old Cromwell Stuart, son of Peter Stuart of Seaforth (north of Liverpool) the Lancashire shipowner and lay homeopath. Cromwell Stuart was born in 1847 (dying in South Africa at 22) with most of the inscribed pages dating from about a decade later. Presumably this was a gift from his parents which Peter took with him to Germany where most of the inscribed pages were undertaken, usually offering a motto and inscription below, sometimes with a drawing. Signers include Jose Francis da Sehra, G J F Bruel, Albert Knolcke, Rothmeyer, Ernst Sengstack, August von Bothmer, Louise Evers, Magnus Mansfeldt, F F Vollmer, Marie Hogreive. A beautiful manuscript album amicorum. Expensively bound in black leather, with dark blue and gilt monogrammed end papers. The outside is discreet and simple, but there is gilt decoration and dentelles to the inside boards. No titles. Possibly an "off the shelf" blank book purchased for the purpose. Then there is a beautiful watercolour of two windmills by the water's edge. This appears to be a Dutch landscape, from the Delft blue colour palette and the costume of the figure to the foreground. The work is signed Marie Laurent. Soissons, 26/1/1900. The rest of the work is 68 pages of neat text, with poems, comments and prose inspirational passages, mainly from famous French authors, and all written in French. Although most of this is in a variety of hands, the last tale, which is 24 pages long, is entitled "les trois messes basses" (A Christmas short story by Alphonse Daudet) and is in a neat hand by one writer. There are finally perhaps 150 blank pages. A beautifully presented book. Soissons is a commune in the northern French department of Aisne. 18.5cm x 13cm. .

(19.5 x 12 cm). 58 leaves with text or illustrations (of a total of 158, the others blank) in a recycled 18th-century French binding of full mottled calf, the spine with raised bands and gilt-decorated compartments, red morocco label titled "Collection P. Eudel - Catalogue d'Orfèvrerie", marbled endpapers, edges dyed red. Four additional leaves tucked inside, 3 of which being manuscript, the other type-written. Three portraits, two in full colour, all signed by Ferdinand Bac, plus an additional portrait in black ink of Maurice Donnay by Pierre Craponne. Ex libris Henriette Craponne-Eudel with her bookplate to front pastedown. Her father, Paul Eudel, was a famous silver collector, which explains the binding. Light shelfwear to binding, internally clean. An interesting collection containing original texts by several writers of the time, including Maurice Donnay, Abel Rémusat, Ferdinand Bac, Hélène Vervoort and Marie-Louise Vert, with some wonderful original drawings in full colour by Ferdinand Bac and stirring compositions by Donnay, for example a page-long meditative poem dated Christmas Day, 1939, at the outset of World War 2: Pour la Noël à la campagne, Nous étions chez nos cheres amis. On a bu deux doigts de champagne. Un pareil soir c'est bien permis. Le jardin était blanc de givre; Pourtant on avait chaud au cur. Malgré la guerre peut-on vivre Ces quelques instants de bonheur? Ou faut-il qu'on se les reproche Comme une offense à nos soldats? Cette fête qui nous rapproche, Faut penser à ceux de là bas! ALBUM AMICORUM (illustrator). CANNON, Margaret A. "Forget Me Not" Album -- a Philadelphia Album Amicorum (1829-1833). Philadelphia and Frankfort, PA, 1829-1833. Quarto (9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches; 241 x 190 mm). 73 unnumbered leaves. With cursive ink manuscript in various hands on recto of most pages. Some with hand-colored drawing, generally floral designs. A few small drawing tipped in. With evidence of some excised leaves, missing paste-ons etc. The album's paper stock was made in Philadelphia by W. Amies & Co. and bears their watermark ["W. Amies & Co." -- "Phila." -- Dove bearing olive branch], likely produced ca. 1828 or 1829. A small unopened hand colored envelope and bookmark, both dated 1905 laid in. Full contemporary calf. Boards and spine elaborately tooled in gilt. Spine with black morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. Front board with album's owner Margaret A. Connon's name stamped in gilt. With beautiful color striped endpapers. Gilt of the last name rubbed off. Boards are very worn, rubbed and scuffed. Pages are toned and soiled. But still all the entries are clear and unfaded. Overall a very nice example. This Album amicorum was complied by Margaret A. Cannon and contains numerous poems in various manuscript hands, and most are dedicated to Margaret. Some are signed and some are dated and labeled with the location. These are marked Frankford (8 miles from downtown Philadelphia) or Philadelphia. The earliest poem is dated June 26, 1829 (at Philadelphia); the majority of the poems were inscribed in 1829-1831. Two poems are dated July 26, 1831 and the latest poem was written at Philadelphia on July 24, 1833. The subject of most of the poetry is friendship, love and affection. The final poem in the album quotes the Famous American Poet Philip Freneau. Freneau was considered "The Poet of the American Revolution" and died in 1832. In the album the poem is entitled "Liberty" but it is actually taken from the first two stanza's of his poem "On the Great Western Canal of the State of New York" and reads: "The nation true to honor's cause, To equal rights and equal laws , Is well secured, and well released From the proud monarchs of the east. Thus Holland rose from Spain's controul, And thus shall rise from pole to pole Those systems formed on reason's plan That vindicate the Rights of man." HBS 68478. $1,250. Signed.

Contient une lettre de Charles Kuwasseg à Emile Clavel et un poème d'"Oscar H.". Initiales "E.C." sur le premier plat. Reliure recouverte d'un papier rouge imitant du cuir, dos à nerfs titré en lettres dorées, initiales "E.C." dorées sur le premier plat. Remarquable album amicorum réunissant plus de 110 dessins et aquarelles exécutés par une quinzaine d'artistes de l'entourage du peintre Emile Clavel (1848 - 1932) dont les initiales dorées "E.C." ornent le premier plat. Une émouvante lettre de son maître et ami Charles E. Kuwasseg (1833 - 1904) débute l'album où figurent une soixantaine d'uvres de ce célèbre peintre de la mer et des paysages maritimes qui fut marin au long cours. La lettre manuscrite bordée de noir datée du 18 juin 1897 placée par Clavel au début de son album nous renseigne sur le fort lien d'amitié fraternel qui l'unissait à son maitre. Dans ce touchant courrier illustré d'un dessin à l'encre noire représentant deux voiliers, Kuwasseg évoque d'abord son quotidien: la perte très récente de son épouse (Ernestine Caroline Chavaroche (1832-1897)), les sorties, la difficulté à se mouvoir, les projets de voyage et de travail entravés par son état. Viennent ensuite les précieux conseils prodigués à son ami et élève: "Travaillez bien toujours et encore et toujours. Largement et sûrement, ne faites pas en deux coups ce que vous pouvez faire en un seul. Finissez bien les premiers plans. C'est là le côté faible et difficile. Je vous écrirai aussi souvent que le Barbillon me donnera le plaisir de causer avec vous. Mais je vous le dis encore, en vérité, en vérité, ne négligez pas les premiers plans de vos études. C'est là, la science. Pas de sciences, pas de vérité. Votre vieil ami que vous devez croire. C. Kuwasseg." Cette lettre est suivie d'un poème introductif: "L'album est cette galerie, Où chacun suspend son portrait, En jabot l'esprit y paraît, C'est un cours de coquetterie. Mais l'âme s'y montre pourtant, Car il n'est besoin d'un volume, Pour trahir l'artiste content, De son crayon ou de sa plume. De l'encrier, les hannetons, Sortant pour s'essuyer la patte, Viennent dérouler à tâtons, Un trait où leur bêtise éclate. Un bon cur s'y livre d'un mot, Un fat en dix lignes s'étale, Un sage reluit plus qu'un sot, Et l'or pur, que le chrysocale. Pour moi, comme un humble tambour, Je conduis ici la colonne! Je me tais : car le clairon sonne, Et la musique attend son tour! Paris 31 mars 1874. Oscar h." Peintre académique dans la mouvance de l'école de Barbizon, Charles Euphrasie Kuwasseg (1833 - 1904) est le fils du peintre autrichien Karl Joseph Kuwasseg, qui lui prodigue les bases du métier d'artiste. Avant de poursuivre dans la voie de son père, le jeune homme s'embarque pour quelques années comme marin au long cours et parcourt le Monde. Cette expérience lui donne une parfaite connaissance des navires et du milieu maritime, talent qui le distingue de ses contemporains. De retour à terre, il devient l'élève de Jean-Baptiste Henri Durand-Brager (1814 - 1879) et d'Eugène Isabey (1803 - 1886). A partir de 1855, Kuwasseg expose régulièrement au Salon de Paris où il obtient de nombreux prix. Soucieux de transmettre son savoir, il devient professeur d'art. Il tisse ainsi une forte relation avec ses élèves, parmi lesquels le plus proche sera Emile Clavel (1848 - 1932) avec lequel il entretiendra une abondante relation épistolaire. L'uvre de Kuwasseg est considérable. Maîtrisant à la perfection l'art du contraste et faisant preuve d'une finesse exceptionnelle, il demeure l'un des peintres français les plus admirés du XIXe siècle. Ses uvres sont exposées dans de nombreux musées, dont les musées des beaux-arts de Rouen, de La Rochelle, de Pontaise, Digne, Périgueux et de Rennes, le Musée maritime de Tatihou, le British Museum ainsi que le Maltwood Art Museum de l'Université de Victoria (Canada). Ses sujets de prédilection sont les rivages, les habitants et les bateaux de Bretagne, de Normandie et de la Mer du Nord. Des thèmes récurrents ressortent des uvres hyperréalistes de ce peintre qui fut marin avant d'être artiste: naufrages, tempêtes, marins pêcheurs au travail (ff. 4, 23, 27, 44). Les nombreux dessins et esquisses de Kuwasseg dont Clavel a garnis son album n'ont pas été choisis par hasard: ils nous offrent une palette très complète de l'uvre de son maître. Parmi ces dessins, nous avons pu identifier une ébauche d'une de ses uvres emblématiques: Le retour des pêcheurs (1862) représentant des marins poussant leur embarcation sur une gréve (f. 44). Cette embarcation est un élément présent dans un grand nombre de ses uvres. Outre sa passion pour la peinture, Clavel poursuit une carrière politique. Il sera entre autres administrateur de la chambre des députés. 6 de ses dessins sont présents dans cet album (ff. 35, 45, 60, 62, 88, 91). Ils représentent des paysages et des scènes maritimes. Le dessin au f. 88 est très proche du style de son frère, Léon Iwill Clavel (1850 - 1923), artiste peintre et mari de Pauline Lacher Ravaisson-Mollien (1856 - 1910). Dans l'album, une dizaine de dessins sont de la main d'Iwill (ff. 7, 11, 14, 48, 51, 52, 53, 54, 59, 61 et 64) et deux croquis portent la signature "F. Ravaisson-Mollien" (ff. 18 et 24), le beau-père d'Iwill: Félix Ravaisson-Mollien. Il y a également 3 caricatures au crayon gris (ff. 29, 33 et 34) de la main de Paul de Laubadère (1859 - 1931), artiste peintre, graveur, dessinateur et illustrateur chez Larousse ; 2 dessins (ff. 5 et 8) d'Adrien Louis Bruneau (1831 - 1884), artiste peintre et aquarelliste français ; 1 portrait (f. 15) de Fanny Geefs (1807 - 1883), portraitiste et peintre de scènes de ge.

The book is bound in red cushioned leather with "Album" diagonally in gilt to the front cover, the text block has rounded corners and all edges gilt. Approximately 90 pages, the album used front to back, but with pages skipped so perhaps two thirds full. The condition is poor, the covers are both detached and very rubbed, the spine is gone and many pages are loose, but the contents are generally well preserved. The owner of the book seems to have been a young woman named Maud (possibly Hall or Batterson), a professional actress of some description, connected with the theatre, variety shows, music hall and pantomimes. The penultimate entry was made at Princess's theatre, Glasgow by Lily Hall who writes "Just a few lines in remembrance of a pleasant time spent together in pantomime.". There is an inscription from the Empire Theatre, Douglas by a Charles and Topsy Gladwell which begins "With love & best wishes to our little fairy queen.". Notable comic actor, Fred Ramsdale adds a humorous verse in March 1905, and famous woman blackface performer, May Henderson signs as "Dusky comedy Queen". Contains some beautifully executed sketches, watercolours and cartoons, as well as music and poetry, often quite creatively arranged, with Edward W. and Julia Scorah contributing a battle of the sexes in juxtaposed warring poems titled "To Woman"("that fair & false deceiver") and "To Man"("Trust man for nothing, nor once think him true"). Most entries are signed, or initialled and dated, with locations given. A fascinating insight into the British travelling theatrical community of the early 1900s.

Carnet (17,5 x 12 cm) contenant 8 dessins et aquarelles et 11 pages manuscrites. Maroquin marron janséniste, roulette intérieure, tranches dorées (étiquette de Decelle à Compiègne). Emouvants et jolis dessins exécutés en partie par un "poilu" artiste. La première vignette (9,5 x 2,5 cm) représente une vue de Besançon datée du 10 mai 1917, puis un poème titré "A la Française" signé de Cadet: "Donne au Poilu ton fier sourire, Et ne cesse de lui redire, Toujours combien il sera doux, de vivre pour notre Patrie, etc." avec un beau portrait de femme en vis-à-vis situé dans le secteur de Loivre près de Reims, daté du 20 juin 1917. A remarkable personal album of over 150 signatures gathered by Boris Skerl, who, as director of three of Italy's most prestigious luxury hotels, had unique access to a galaxy of musicians, writers, politicians, royalty, and Hollywood stars. One page is representative of the book's extraordinary scope, three towering figures from entirely different worlds rubbing shoulders in the same space: Walt Disney, Montgomery of Alamein, and Le Corbusier. From around 1906, Skerl worked as director of the hotels Excelsior in Florence, the Danieli in Venice, and the Des Iles Borromées in Stresa. He was highly regarded by his international clientele and known affectionately as "il commendatore". In a number of photographs, Skerl is featured posing with his guests. To complement their signatures, photos, and postcards, Skerl preserved newspapers and journal clippings relating to them, often highlighting major historical events. Over 40 musicians are represented, a number adding a musical quotation. Composers include Puccini (signed photograph), Richard Strauss (signed photograph and musical quotation), Stravinsky (musical quotation), Mascagni, Franz Lehar, Gian Francesco Malipiero, and Umberto Giordano. Among the conductors are Wilhelm Furtwängler, Leopold Stokowski (signed photo and dedication), Herbert von Karajan, Arturo Toscanini (signed photograph), Sergiu Celibidache, Igor Markevitch, Victor de Sabata, Dimitri Mitropulos, and Tullio Serafin. Instrumentalists and singers comprise, among others, Alfred Cortot, Arthur Rubenstein, Wilhelm Backhaus (musical quotation), Walter Gieseking, Yehudi Menuhin, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (photo signed), Andres Segovia, Beniamino Gigli, Tito Schipa, and Richard Tauber. Maria Callas is pictured with the eccentric multimillionaire collector Carlos de Beistegui (known for his fabulous Venetian parties), and the American gossip columnist Elsa Maxwell (sporting a version of the corno ducale, symbolic headgear of the Doges of Venice) Literature is represented by the Nobel Prize winners John Steinbeck and Sinclair Lewis, the Pulitzer prize winner William Saroyan, Stefan Zweig, Alberto Moravia, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Erich Maria Remarque, Maurice Dekobra, Pierre La Mure, and Rafael Sabatini. For the visual arts, architecture, and technology, there is Salvador Dali, Giorgio de Chirico (alone, and in a particularly engaging photograph sottobraccio with Stravinsky, signed by both - old colleagues from the Ballets Russes), Marino Marini, Carlo Carrà, Pietro Annigoni, Marcello Piacentini (proponent of fascist architecture under Mussolini), and Guglielmo Marconi. War and politics also feature strongly, with key figures including members of Hitler's inner circle such as Werner von Blomberg, Wilhelm Keitel, and Franz von Papen. Skerl records the Anglo-American occupation of Florence in 1944, and includes photos of himself with General Mark Clark, as well as two signed typed letters from him. Rodolfo Graziani, Italian general and commander in the Second Italo-Ethiopian War, appears next to photos and signatures of the Ethiopian royal family in Florence. The album ends with a photograph of Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler (unsigned) shaking hands during the famous visit to Florence in which the Führer symbolically asserted his dominance over his ally; this is accompanied by a rare pamphlet entitled Incontro a Firenze tra il Führer e il Duce, with floor plans of the palaces where their meetings were held (we have traced no copies in institutional holdings). Among the royal signatures are those of King Vittorio Emanuele III and Queen Elena of Italy, several members of the House of Savoy, Edward, Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson, King Alfonso XIII of Spain, Prince Christopher of Greece and Denmark, and Michael I, last king of Romania. Guests from Asia include Reza Pahlavi, Shah of Iran, Empress Nam Phuong of Vietnam, and Akihito, future Emperor of Japan. A full listing of signatures and contents is available on request. Annotated in manuscript throughout, with photographs, postcards, journal clippings, and other ephemera mounted, tipped in, and loosely inserted. Early 20th-century Florentine sheep over bevelled boards, spine with raised bands, compartments lettered in gilt, boards decorated with faux leather lacings and Florentine fleur-de-lis designs in relief, decorated brass anchor plates and catch plates, traces of ties, patterned endpapers, edges untrimmed. Housed in a dark green flat-back cloth box by the Chelsea Bindery. Binding scuffed, front joint cracked and split to rear joint, but holding firm, lacking clasps, internally well preserved. A very good example.

Herbo est d'ailleurs l'auteur d'un beau portrait, probablement post-mortem, du célèbre acteur afro-américain abolitionniste Ira Aldridge figuré en amateur d'art et vendu chez Christie's à New-York en 2021 pour le prix record de 137.500 dollars. Le « type Michaux » sera en circulation jusque dans les années 1930. Durant la Première Guerre mondiale, il est chargé de la gravure des monnaies de zinc frappées pour pallier la pénurie des pièces de 5, 10, 25 et 50 centimes. Il est fait membre de la légion d'honneur sous Léopold II, il sera également avocat de l'ambassade de France en Belgique. Il fit construire l'Hôtel Frison un bâtiment de style « Art nouveau » conçu par l'architecte Victor Horta au numéro 37 de la rue Lebeau dans le quartier du Sablon, seule maison dans le centre historique, au cur de Bruxelles. C'est en 1894 que Victor Horta dessina cet hôtel de maître pour son ami l'avocat Maurice Frison. La maison est construite sur le site de l'ancien site du Palais de Justice de Bruxelles, détruit au XIXe siècle. C'est la deuxième maison bâtie Art nouveau de Victor Horta à Bruxelles, dont la construction s'acheva en 1895. Livres.

ALBUM AMICORUM MANUSCRIPT FROM THE HUDSON VALLEY, NEW YORK, CA. 1872, FEATURING FIVE EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLES OF AMERICAN CALLIGRAPHY BY S.V. JOHNSON. In this album of 102 leaves are warmly inscribed autograph sentiments, many of which are quite accomplished, and all but one dated during the summer months of the year 1872. The album was certainly compiled by a student of the Eastman National Business College of Poughkeepsie; while many of the student's colleagues were from the Hudson River valley, others came from the southern United States, the Midwest, and as far away as Cuba and Colombia. The album contains an etched vignette entitled "Residence and Pleasure Grounds of Prof. H.G. Eastman, Presd't of Eastman College, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on the Hudson," which depicts a horse-drawn carriage leaving beautifully landscaped grounds upon which resides a stately house. Preceding the vignette are two inscriptions by J.S. Noard, added later in 1882. That many of the signers were enrolled at Eastman's is attested by their use of the "E.N.B.C." and "E.B.C." suffixes. It is not surprising that a few signers were female, given women's advancement into secretarial jobs (long held by men) and the special vocational training required. The highlight of the album is the series of five very finely rendered calligraphic specimens executed in purple, blue, gold and brown ink, all signed by S.V. Johnson, Penman of Poughkeepsie, being full color examples of "Off-Hand Flourishing" (see fols. 26r, 35r, 50r, 62r, and 76r. On the facing pages of said leaves cited above, drawn in brown ink, are five more examples of large flourished details by Johnson, whose autograph also appears on fols. 43v and 44r. All ten examples are very similar in style and execution to entry No. 62 in the Peabody Institute exhibition catalogue "Calligraphy & Handwriting in America: 1710-1962" (artist uncredited). S.V. Johnson placed a small ad in the 1880 Youth's Companion for "An Elaborate Work of Art. Perfect Photo Lithograph copies of an elegant Gem of Penmanship, wrought by myself, may be obtained. Get one." The 1881 Census shows his profession as "professional penman." By 1891 he seems to have removed to Waterbury, CT as we learn from the Western Penman, vol. 7, no. 11 (1891), p. 25. A handsome Album Amicorum, being an excellent vehicle and preserver of American folk art.

Überaus prunkvolles und wohlerhaltenes Freundschaftsalbum (album amicorum) einer Dame namens Friederica Reißauer mit zahlreichen handschriftlichen Eintragungen, persönlichen Gedichten, Zeichnungen und Basteleien: Die allesamt aus dem Raum Naumburg bis Leipzig ab ca. 1812 verfassten Widmungen werden durch mannigfaltige kreative Entwürfe ausgeschmückt: Persönliche Gedichte, Aquarelle, Zeichnungen, kunstvolle Basteleien, ein einmontierter Haarzopf, Segenswünsche uvm. Weinroter Ganzlederband mit üppiger Rückenvergoldung, goldgeprägtes Rückenschildchen mit kursivem Schriftzug: "Erinnerung", goldumrankte schwarze Vignette mit dem Namen des Besitzerin, verziert mit Musikinstrumenten und Bordüren. Vorsätze aus Samtpapier, ringsum unverblasster Goldschnitt. M2 Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

La partition est constituée de 12 portées musicales (clé de Sol, avec bémol) sous lesquelles sont notées les paroles du canon : .Mon Luth dormait, ne pouvait laccorder. Ma faible voix nosait plus préluder.

Die Verfasser sind meist Frauen oder Mädchen. -- 1 Blatt mit handkoloriertem Punktierstich, 3 Blätter mit kleinen Aquarellen. -- Blätter teils leicht fleckig, Schachtel etwas fleckig und leicht berieben, Schuber mit handschriftlicher Bezeichnung und leicht fleckig, sonst gut erhalten. || Das Stammbuch stellt ein bedeutendes kulturgeschichtliches Zeugnis der bürgerlichen Freundschaftskultur dar, das seine Blütezeit zwischen dem späten 18. und der Mitte des 19. Jh. erlebte.
