Wraps, light blue textured paper with cutout exposing Warner Club seal on foil sheet. Quarto, 56 pp. Some wrinkling, particularly at corners; several holes for spiral binding torn through; small stain on back cover. Overall, better than Very Good, quite close to Near Fine. This 56-page softcover program/album from the 1947 tenth formal dinner-dance of the West Coast Warner Club contains messages from each Warner brother as well as C.L. Alleborn, Stephen Longstreet, James R. Webb and Peter Milne. Included also, of course, are B&W full-page photos of many of the top Warner Brothers stars of that time: Bruce Bennett, Humphrey Bogart, Jack Carson, Dane Clark, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Errol Flynn, Sidney Greenstreet, Robert Hutton - well, that takes it through the H's. Scarce piece of Hollywood history, a fragile one which never existed in large numbers. L201.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 84 folio album bound in soft green morocco, gilt title to front cover, blank pages coloured pink, pale green, lemon, pale brown with watercolour-painting quality paper sheets interspersed. The book belonged to Miss Hilda King to whom it was presented on Feb 24th 1913 by her friends on the eve of her departure for Teheran where she worked as a governess/nurse. Already a published author of , children's stories (for the Family Herald, October 1911-a copy tipped-in) her identity is confirmed by her entry for a crochet competition which links her to the Indo European Telegraph Company, then a rival to the Anglo-Indian telegraph service and a surviving company from the infamous Reuter Concession of the 1880's, later to become Cable and Wireless. Many of the autograph messages are farewells and in Tehran she received tokens of affection from European families. Amongst these are three competent paintings of flowers by daughters of Gazala Bey, Jeanne, Isabelle and Victoria Gazala, dated 1914 who may appear in a copy of a photograph of Hilda and her charges. Gazala Bey Abd al Ahad Suleiman Dominique (1854 -1929) was a Catholic Ottoman Turk born in Baghdad who trained at the Faculty of Medicine in the Sorbonne and became Responsible Doctor for the Health Service at the Imperial Court of Persia, Medical Officer at the Turkish Embassy in Teheran, Health and Sanitary Inspector in the Capital of Libya, Member of the Constitutional Assembly in Iraq and Principal Deputy for the Province of Basrah. Other inscriptions by Leroy van Gertruyden, H.M. Abrahamian (writing in Armenian), S.C. Basil, Sateriq Abrahamian (writing in Persian). Usual paintings, portraits and numorous illustration stypical of the period. Hilda King left Tehran in April 1915 (?)-last entry dated 1920. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾".

Hard Cover. Folio album of photographs, newspaper clippings and ephemera relating to Mayor of Harrogate J. H. Newsome's life and specifically his year in office, as compiled by himself. With 57 original monochrome press photographs, mainly approximately 16 cm x 12 cm mounted two to a leaf, rectos only, some with printed captions; 36 items of ephemera including menus, programmes, invitations and official cards relating to events in Harrogate and district during the term of office and 26 newspaper clippings of varying size. A unique and detailed record of Mayor of Harrogate John Henry Newsome's year in Mayoral office from November 1933-34 together with other significant personal ephemera. An active member of the 1911 Starbeck Strike (which is depicted on a postcard photograph in the album), Newsome's election was controversial with a number of councillors abstaining from the vote in protest at the election of a socialist, which is referred to in some of the newspaper clippings in the album; Newsome was Harrogate's first socialist Mayor. The collection offers a fascinating glimpse into the social history and civic functions of a major provincial town during the inter-war period, and a comprehensive record of life in office. Of particular note to historians of the town are a photograph of the opening of the Harrogate Art Gallery in 1930 showing the Earl of Harewood making his speech, ephemera relating to the opening of the new Sun Colonnade in Valley Gardens in 1933 and the brochure for the Jubilee of the Incorporation of the Borough Thanksgiving Service; historians of the county will be interested in the official greetings cards from a number of other Yorkshire civic worthies. Full black morocco with gilt titles to spine and upper board. Also laid-in are 4 large photographs: one pair of matching images approximately 21 cm x 16 cm, mounted on card depicting respectively Mrs Newsome, and Mr & Mrs Newsome; image of the 1933 15th Anniversary of Armistice Celebrations approximately 37 cm x 28 cm; large image approximately 30 cm x 25 cm depicting six ladies in civic regalia with trophies. Additionally, a matching pair of studio portrait photographs mounted on stiff card approximately 25 cm x 28 cm, depicting the Mayor and the Mayoress with pencilled caption to reverse of each, housed in a brown envelope. Also included is a boxed solid silver armorial watch fob enamelled in red, white and blue, engraved to reverse " Coun. John Henry Newsome J.P. Mayor of Harrogate 1933-34". Album covers scuffed with wear to corners and front joint just starting; a little scattered light foxing to contents, mainly to mount leaves, and loose Armistice Celebration photograph nicked & creased to edge. Very good condition overall, including the watch fob. A unique record of the civil life of Harrogate during the inter-war years. Heavyweight so a contribution towards increased postage costs will be requested for overseas delivery.

85 separately printed broadsides, flyers and hand-bills; one printed pamphlet (Speech of Mr Ellice, for a select committee of of enquiry on the state of the silk trade. [s.i., Coventry?]. [s.n., s.d., likely 1830]. 16pp); and several clippings from contemporary newspaper accounts. Contemporary marbled paper covered wrappers. Worn, with splitting to spine, loss to surfaces. In spite of the exterior, the album has preserved the contents rather well; apart from some occasional marking, browning and creasing, the printed material contained within is largely clean and fresh, pasted to the album leaves. A remarkable assembly of material relating to the election of members of Parliament for the two seats of the City of Coventry, on Saturday July 31st, during the 1830 general election, which had been triggered by the death of King George IV. In addition to the relatively official and perfunctory handbills and posters - including items promoting both the previous Whig MP, British merchant, Director of the Hudson's Bay Company and reforming politician Edward Ellice the Elder (1783-1863), and that of his Tory opponent Thomas Bilcliffe Fyler (1788-1838), which necessarily accompanied electioneering in this era, this volume also highlights the cut and thrust of campaigning. The majority of the ephemeral contents of this volume - many of which are unsurprisingly unrecorded in the usual databases - are either satirical or outright attacks on opponents. These include a mock wanted notice 'Wanted immediately.two Candidates For the next Election.Political Sentiments, or Moral Character, of no consequence', elaborate squibs including numerous 'Chronicles of the Indigoes', and 'Chronicles of the Yellows' - many relating to the significant local silk trade - songsters (To tunes including' Merrily 'O ' and 'The Boyne Water'), and verses. The proliferation of election material represented by this album is all the more remarkable given that the election of both Whig and Tory was, for the majority of the campaign, looking likely to occur without contest. Bruised by the 1826 general election campaign (when the chagrin of the city's weaving industry over import costs industry led to an immensely costly and violent campaign, and the ejection of the sitting Whig, Edward Ellice), and economically buffeted by the 1827 Elections Expenses Act ban on the use of ribbons, a compromise was tentatively agreed to allow for representation of both Whig and Tory factions. Much of the campaign's white heat was thus focused on securing the election of one candidate of either faction, and excluding any 'Third candidate'. Whilst a third candidate did eventually appear, in the shape of the political radical Richard Spooner of Birmingham, this was not until the very eve of the poll. His part in the election is therefore represented by a single piece in this album, apologising for failing to make 'the necessary arrangements for a Contested Election', but begging to assure that he would 'not be found wanting' in representing his prospective constituents in Parliament. Rather charmingly, pasted to the final leaf of the album is a short printed flyer featuring the 'Final state of the Poll'; perhaps unsurprisingly, Spooner received just four votes, meaning that both Ellice and Flyer were elected to the two member constituency. A full list of the contents oft his volume, the vast majority of which was printed in Coventry and unrecorded in either COPAC or OCLC, is available on request. Size: Folio.

Though the connection is not written in the scrapbook, Solomon H. Stanger is the uncle of Harriet and Susie Stanger who also grew up in Gloucester County. Other paper ephemera include invitations to baby showers and academic awards for various children from the family. Many of the photographs feature different family members by generation. Most of the photographs also include the negatives. One color picture shows a 100 year old wooden cradle handmade by Jacob Stanger with a small blonde doll sitting inside. Another picture features Harriet Stanger at 81 years old with a warm smile unusual to that time frame. There are quite a few pictures on Nina Knight's parents and her home which was built by her father. Several photos show the extended family of Nina and her sister Susie, their parents, cousin's, and children. Nina was born in 1888 in New Jersey. She set up her family's 15th annual reunion in 1959 and was in charge of the historical notes and pictures for the family tree. Nina was married to Aaron Knight but did not have any children. Nina passed away in 1961 after finishing what she could of her family's scrapbook and was buried in Tansboro, New Jersey. An interesting look on the extensive family tree created by a young woman for her extended family living in New Jersey from 1850-1950.

  • Thick folio. 14.75 x 12 x 3.5 in. [166 pp (unpaginated).], most original folio sized beige paper, other smaller mylar sleeves with photos & clippings inserted, many pages with significant manuscript in ink. With 230 total photographs tipped-in, some in corners, some inserted into archival sleeves, occasional old scotch tape mountings (over 30 in colour), sized from 2.5 x 3.5 in. up to 8 x 10 in., and even 6 x 14 in., most with pencil, ink, typed, or printed captions beside, in the lower margins, or amongst the 200+ clippings mounted and tipped-in to the sheets (many large folding), two original dealer's catalogues for the Sabreliner aircraft, including dealer literature, and business cards. Original padded post-binder, embossed & raised decorations in gilt & silver on front cover, typed title label taped to upper fore-edge (some scuffing, edgewear, chipping & tears to some leaves, toning to newspaper clippings, offsetting and ghosting from tape, some photos w/ minor tears, occasional offsetting from clippings) still an excellent exemplar. This impressive and well-documented photo album/scrapbook filled with 230 photographs provide an incomparable visual and textual record for the aviation company, Remmert-Werner, Inc. from World War II to the 1960s. Remmert (1913-1989) was a high school dropout working at the Curtiss-Wright hangar at Lambert Field in St. Louis where his father worked as a Watchmen in the 1930s. He quickly rose in the company, becoming the Curtiss-Wright Company Tech Rep in China during the opening years of World War II, and in 1943 became a Naval Officer, inspecting material production for aircraft until 1945. As shown in the photographs, and explained through clippings, and manuscript notes in Remmert's bold hand, Remmert-Werner Air Service was founded at Lambert Field following World War II, selling Beechcraft and Cessna Aircraft, and buying up war surplus airplanes for conversion. The images depict the Air Ambulance charter service with a fleet of three Beechcraft airplanes from 1945-1946, as well as the Air Service establishing themselves as dealers for Motorola, Piper, Swift, and Fairchild Aircraft, founding a Flight Training School, and contracting with Texaco to sell aviation fuel at the field. The images also portray Remmert-Werner quickly buying up a couple surplus PT-19 biplane trainers, when their flight school expanded to Starling Airport by 1947. They would later begin selling and leasing Beechcraft, Lodestar, and eventually the Sabreliner corporate jets. The photographs also display their twin engine Beech D18S aircraft setting in front of the Remmert-Werner hangar with Texaco signage and Texaco oil truck, the Cessna 140 winner of the Miami Air Races, Motorola Radio J3 Cub aircraft, their Vultee BT-13 Valiant trainer aircraft, and even a Convair B-36 Peacemaker, which was the largest mass-produced piston-engined aircraft ever built on display at an Army air show on Lambert field with the Remmert-Werner hangars in the background. Remmert-Werner quickly moved into converting aircraft for corporate clients in 1946, and over the next two decades would convert over 200 aircraft, service 1000s of planes, and became famous for their luxurious flying penthouses for corporate and wealthy clients. Not only are their images showing the clients visiting the Remmert-Werner hangars and airfields, with clippings specifying and promoting their clients, but also many images of the company dog named Myrtle setting on discarded parts, or nosing her way into photos. Remmert & Werner began their career by converting a surplus C-47A to the DC-3 "Prairie Wings" by enlarging the windows, installing luxurious seats, galley operations, and upon completion took the whole company to the Indianapolis Air Races in 1948, which were the first following World War II. They also converted and maintained the corporate fleet for the Gaylord Container Corporation, by buying up a number of surplus B-25 aircraft, and turning them into.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Quarto. 12" x 9.75". Full leather 14-ring binder, stamped in gilt. 24 mylar sleeved leaves with 34 photographs (14 in color, the rest black and white) and 23 items of ephemera inserted on both sides. An additional 3 color photos, and five duplicates of one of the 8"x10" photos laid in. 16 of the photos (all black and white) measure 8" x 10", the rest around 3.25" x 5". Album near fine with bottom corner of joints just starting to crack; contents generally fine. Crown Estates was meant to be a subdivision in Rialto, California offering homes, "of top quality . . . completely equipped and engineered to make day-by-day living less tedious." Its builder, Ron Epstein, planned the site near the intersection of Meridian Avenue and 6th Street. Although a newspaper puff piece implied the building of 40 homes, we're not sure Epstein was able to accomplish anything more than a couple of models. The album offered here documents his marketing efforts. Epstein took out full-page newspaper ads in August, 1959 and also conducted a promotion where the crowns used by the Miss Universe, Miss U.S.A., and Miss America pageants respectively were displayed in the sales office which also served as the model home. Several examples of the print advertising as well as images of the crowns and models are included. Other photos include interior and exterior shots of model homes. The staged internal shots show couples enjoying dinner and a child sitting in the living room with her father. There are three photos of artist renderings of homes along with floor plans. The marketing made a big deal of "The ManorVac", a built-in vacuum cleaner, and several of the larger photos feature a model amazed at the modern wonder of a cleaning machine attached to her home. Ephemera consists mostly of newspaper advertisements but also includes four copies of a double sided company flier and four copies of a brochure. An interesting look at an imaginitive real estate promotion in California at the end of the 1950s, which seems to rely laregely on the ease of vacuuming!

Hardcover. Condition: Very good +. Oblong 4to (27.5cm x 36cm) In a smart, well made photo album with patterned leather textured dark red boards with black woven string ties. Stamped Daimaru, a leading Japanese department store at the time, to inner rear board. The album starts with ephemera from the voyage over, including an information for passengers pamphlet, the New Year's Day menu for Friday, January 1st, 1937, and route map and continues with pictures and text from what would have been a tourist guide for the passengers, with reproductions of ukiyo-e prints, and colour photos of Japanese traditional activities with text. The album continues with tickets, shows and labels collected in Japan. The compiler appears to be a Leslie Llewellyn, with a press cutting from the Bideford and North Devon Weekly Gazette dated December 29, 1937 authored by him outlining details of a trip he had made over the course of six months to Japan. A fun, well put together collection of Japanese and Japan related ephemera. In a curious footnote, the ship's captain, Captain B Matsukura, was later shipwrecked when his liner Terukuni Maru struck a mine off Harwich on November 21st 1939. A little wear here and there to the album, but contents clean and bright, overall a very well kept item.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. 172 x 120mm; pp. [8, index], [129 numbered leaves, filled] rear endpapers used. A revealing volume of newspaper cuttings, mainly from 1906 8, put together by Edward G. Spencer-Churchill, Winston's cousin and an aspiring politician himself. At this early point there are close parallels between the two men's careers. Spencer-Churchill was studying all the major 1906 General Election issues, which were also Winston's concerns at the time - Chinese labour in the colonies, and education reform at home. Some of the clippings are of Spencer-Churchill's own published letters to newspapers, but he also records the activities of his more famous cousin, at one point noting in manuscript 'Winston in H of C' alongside a clipping. There is some pencil highlighting to the clippings, and the volume ends with a series of typed and manuscript pages concerning tariffs and investments - including a signed letter from an employee of the Tariff Commission. Tariff reform was the major issue within the Conservative Party in the period leading up to the 1906 General Election. Good condition: binding a little shaken; cover with partially removed label.

(8 x 9 3/4 inches). Approx. 24 pages of newspaper clippings, 1 folding, pasted into album. 2 loose photographs and a program card. A scrapbook album chronicling the founding, trials, and successes of a motorcycle club in the early years of the sport. This scrapbook shows the evolution of the Kent Motor Club, formed in the county of Kent, England, from its initial beginnings around 1924 and the trials and championships it participated in up to 1927. The articles include details about the club's opening runs and trials including the names of organizers, competitors, and locations. Two of the clippings are letters to the editor which discuss a rivalry between the Kent Motor Club and the Ashford Motor Club, which was founded in 1922. Each newspaper clipping has a hand-written caption underneath with the name of the newspaper and the date of the article. According to one of the newspaper articles, the Kent Motor Club was founded in December of 1925 with a membership of 72 riders. The founding board included the president, Sir Charles Wakefield; the chairman, F. Hayward; the captain F. E. Mockford; vice-captain S. F. Finch; honorary secretary C. F. Stokes; honorary treasurer W. Oliver; honorary trial secretary H. L. Gibbs; honorary assistant trial and publicity secretary L. Hildyard; and several others. Sir Charles Wakefield was an entrepreneur who patented the automatic lubricator for steam engines and, in 1899, founded the Wakefield Oil Company, which came to be known as Castrol, after the ingredient of castor oil used in their lubricant. Castrol was used in the engines of motor cars, airplanes, and motorcycles and today remains a prominent British oil company. Wakefield was also the mayor of London from 1915-1916 and was further known for his philanthrophy, which the Kent Motor Club may have been a recipient of. One article describes the Club's first annual dinner, whose guests included vice president R.C. Rootes, likely the motoring pioneer Reginald Claud Rootes (co-founder of the British car company, Rootes Group), and speaker F. E. Mockford, a well-known figure in the motorcycling world at the time. In 1926, Mockford and his business partner, Cecil Smith, formed a company called London Motor Sports Ltd. and in 1927, they brought motorcycle racing to one of motorsport's oldest venues, the Crystal Palace circuit in south London. The sport proved to be quite popular with the spectating public, who came to the stadium in the tens of thousands to watch competitors on bikes with no brakes fling their way around the track's sharp corners at breakneck speeds. Overall, the album paints a lively picture of the exciting early years of motorcycle speedway racing in Kent, a county home to several motor pioneers.
