Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. WYETH, Betsy James [introduction by] [159] pp. University of Washington Press 2001 9 5/8" x 11 1/2" Warmly inscribed by the author on half-title page Generally regarded as "America's Painter," realist Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) is perhaps the most well known of the artistic Wyeth family dynasty, which includes his father N.C. Wyeth, sister Henriette Hurd, and son Jamie Wyeth. Although most recent explorations of this artist have focused on his family and on the Helga pictures, this unique publication chronicles seven decades of an underappreciated yet historically relevant aspect of his relationship to home and community. Andrew Wyeth: Close Friends is the first critical look at a significant body of paintings and works on paper depicting Wyeth's African-American friends and neighbors in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, a quaint village on the Brandywine River, where he has lived since birth. Andrew Wyeth: Close Friends includes over 100 color reproductions of major tempera and watercolor paintings and numerous black-and-white images of graphite drawings. Works reproduced are drawn from public and private collections, with a large number from the personal collection of the Wyeths. In addition to a foreword by Museum Director R. Andrew Maass, the book includes family photographs and facsimiles of personal correspondence. Inscribed by Illustrator(s).

"Andrew Wyeth was a widely celebrated American artist who specialized in realist watercolor and tempera paintings of people and landscapes. His best-known work, Christina's World (1948), depicts a young women laying in the grass and looking towards a farmhouse. Despite the work's everyday subject matter, it is filled with a haunting sense of urgency and foreboding dread. While his work has been deemed melancholic, the artist preferred to describe it as thoughtful." (Artnet) HBS 69254. $1,650. Signed.

First Edition, First Printing. Signed by Andrew WyethĠs secret model, Helga Testorf on the title page. Inscribed: ÒSigned for Jeff Tynes with thanks and warmest wishes, HelgaÓ. Helga Testorf has the distinction of being the last unknown person to become world famous on the basis of a painting, in this case her striking portrait in a turtleneck sweater wearing brads, which is reproduced in the book and as well on the cover of the dust jacket. When the hidden series of over 240 paintings and drawings including a number of nudes of Helga Testorf by the American master artist, Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) came to the light the art world was startled. It was also believed that Wyeth's closest confidant, his wife, Betsy James Wyeth, was unaware of the artist-model relationship and the work he produced between 1971 and 1985. The works were considered controversial and toured to six venues between 1987 and 1989 to great popular acclaim, this being the accompanying book for that traveling exhibition. Helga Testorf, a native of Germany, first worked for Wyeth's friends, the Kuerners, as a caregiver and likely first met Andrew in that environment as he painted the Kuerners and their farm on a regular basis. In later years Helga also worked as a caregiver for Andrew as he aged and traveled with the family from their home in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, to midcoast Maine where the family has summered for generations. 208 page coffee table book. Minor scuffing to dust jacket from shelf wear, now in mylar cover. Red Cloth boards with gold embossed titling to cover board and spine. Fine in a fine dust jacket.

"The seeds of his characterization of Karl were sewn in the first menacing tempera portrait he made of him in the upstairs bedroom and this later watercolor of Karl's room, where his rifle and animal heads were kept. Karl fascinated Wyeth as a killer. He had been a machine gunner in the German army in the First World War and murdered Americans. He was hardened by war and the fight for survival from season to season on the farm, and he could easily commit beastly things, like nonchalantly shooting and butchering deer and small animals." - Seattle Art Museum Mild edge wear, including a few short shallow wrinkles in the margins. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A rare and quite beautiful Andrew Wyeth 1986 full-color exhibition poster depicting his watercolor, "Helga in the Orchard", signed in pencil by the artist in the lower right margin. "Beginning in 1971, Andrew Wyeth produced over 240 images in tempera, drybrush, watercolor and pencil depicting a single woman ? Helga Testorf. This collection of works, known as "The Helga Pictures" remained hidden from the world, and even Wyeth?s wife Betsy, until it was purchased in almost its entirety by Philadelphia publisher Leonard E.B. Andrews in 1986. Andrews? intention was to preserve the collection for the public?s enjoyment, and shortly after his purchase, the works embarked on a two year traveling exhibition curated by John Wilmerding of the National Gallery of Art. Wyeth was first introduced to Helga by their mutual neighbor Karl Kuerner, whose family and farm in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania had served as subjects of the artist?s work for years, and was immediately captivated by her. Wyeth "depicted [Helga] nude and clothed, indoors and out, asleep and awake, in different seasons and times of day," documenting her physical and emotional evolution over a fifteen year period" - wyeth-net Mild edge wear, including a few short shallow short creases at corners and lower edges. First edition. First edition. Illustrated. 224 pp. Oblong 4to. INSCRIBED by the artist to Lincoln Kirstein, "For Lincoln / with love / Andy" and with a post-script, "The FINNISH VIRGIN / is still hanging in the Mill House / -A." Wyeth is likely referring to THE VIRGIN (1970), his celebrated nude portrait of Siri Erickson. This work is part of large series of paintings of Siri, her family, and the Finnish community around Cushing, Maine. The Mill was Wyeth's home in Chadds Ford. The date of the publication of this catalogue and the completion of THE VIRGIN suggest Kirstein was an early admirer of the painting. Kirstein, who was on the board of MoMA, met Andrew Wyeth after the museum acquired CHRISTINA'S WORLD in 1948. Wyeth was still largely unknown at that time, and he quickly came to rely on Kirstein for support and honest criticism of his work. "Kirstein appointed himself Wyeth's friend, admirer, mentor, and stern critic - in essence a supersuccessor to NC. [.] Wyeth thinks that in the 1950s he needed Kirstein to push him toward more form in his work, more solidity" (Meryman, Andrew Wyeth: A Secret Life (1998) p 239, 243). Kirstein, who disdained most abstract art, was essential in providing Wyeth the confidence he needed to continue work in the face of hostile critics who derided his art as sentimental and unsophisticated. Wyeth was fond of quoting Kirstein's dismissive opinion of the critics, "Why do you want approval from those horses' asses?" (ibid, p. 390). Kirstein was a father-figure to two generations of Wyeth artists, and as Andrew's son Jamie developed his own artistic gifts, Kirstein began to transfer his attention to the younger Wyeth. "After posing for nineteen-year-old Jamie, Kirstein more or less shifted his allegiance from Andrew and became Jamie's friend and mentor. Kirstein told Betsy, 'You gave me the only son I ever had'" (ibid, p. 275). Publisher's illustrated wrappers, soiled and thumbed. Very good Illustrated. 224 pp. Oblong 4to.
