Trade Paperback. Condition: Used - Like New. The poet Ryunosuke Satoro said, 'Individually, we are one drop. Together we are an ocean.' This philosophy is the inspiration for this issue. an exploration, celebration, commentary on the joys of collaboration through our own personal lens. People collaborate on many levels. It occurs in nature, technology, science, art, music and politics. For this issue of Arkitip, we asked artists, technologists, writers and friends to show us a recent collaboration or to create something new. Creative work for this issue originated from New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, San Francisco, Shanghai, Seattle, Paris, Miami, Cape Town and Portland. Tokyo in the 90s was in what seemed to be an eternal funk. As usual, it was the young people that offered hope and creative juice to society, thus a highly entrepreneurial subculture began to discover it own influence. These new creators and designers were born from a tight group of friends, so although they were perhaps competitors, they often joined forces to create new products and identities for the young. Only in Tokyo does consumerism have such spiritual power. Thus the emergence of double brands, where products were able to take on dual characteristics and unique personalities. Soon the 'X' in Japan's subculture became a symbol of personal collaboration. A good collaboration starts with an inspired idea, a desire for unexpected results and mutual respect or pure love of another's work. A great collaboration occurs at that nexus of unforeseen possibilities and positive friction. Grace, openness and honesty can achieve extra-ordinary results. The most satisfying experiences in our careers, as a Cultural Engineer and a Creative Director, have been these moments. - Alex Calderwood + John C Jay Sealed in original poly-wrap bag. Packaged with John Maeda and Becky Bermont hand numbered print piece.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Using the theme of Color we have selected a group of artists to create whatever they wish using Comex supplied paint. Having grown dramatically from a collection of small family businesses to a major industrial corporation, The Comex Group produces paints and coatings customers count on for quality across North, Central and South America. Artists will use the magazine as a medium to give the viewer a closer look at their results. The selected artists will be encouraged to dig deeper into their process to showcase the inner workings of their creations. The culmination of these efforts has been published here in this hand numbered edition, neatly housed with a cobranded Comex + Arkitip paint brush. Along with the printed issue edition we have shot a series of Chronicles to document the artist's processes. To round out the project, the release will be celebrated with installations of the featured artists created works at Project Space, in Los Angeles.

Trade Paperback. Condition: Used - Very Good. McGinness makes his second appearance in Arkitip, the first being way back in Issue No. 0005, published in May 2000. Art Director Sas was first impressed by the artist in 1999, meeting him shortly after his picking up his book, Flatnessisgod. McGinness' art career has flourished exponentially since that time. In addition to being represented by Deitch Galleries and Pace Prints, he has produced over 27 solo shows in galleries worldwide, and recently created a major exhibition as part of Art Basel Miami in 2008. The book entitled Aesthetic Comfort is published by Arkitip on the occasion of the Aesthetic Comfort exhibitions in the Fall of 2008. This artist's book features details of McGinness' paintings converted to coarse halftones and printed in 4 fluorescent inks: orange, yellow, pink, and green. It will accompany each issue edition, which is packaged in a custom designed box made exclusively for Arkitip by Incase. McGinness has been accurately described as 'A Warhol for the 21st Century' (Black Book) and 'a leading pioneer of the new semiotics' (Vogue). Using iconic representations of logos and symbols, he weaves and spins them into something supremely elegant. Sold as is. Marked 'PROMO' on front cover(s). Used as display copy in store. 4°, ca. 100 S., Abb., 1 montierte kart. Taf., Brosch. in Plastiktasche, Tadellos. EA. Ex. Nr. 985/1500. - «We kick off the year with a spectacular issue profiling the inscrutable yet fascinating personality, André Balazs. André Balazs Properties owns and operates eight hotels in the US, including properties in New York, Miami and Los Angeles. His residential projects include 40 Mercer Residences in Soho, designed by architect Jean Nouvel; One Kenmare Square with Richard Gluckman and William Beaver House designed by Calvin Tsao. This issue will focus on the creative side of his work, paying attention to the way he ?pays attention? to details, his inspirations, as well as some of his obsessions. In addition, we chose Andrew Holder to work on a series of illustrations of André?s prestigious and most well known properties for a series of four Surface Mats. One of each that will accompany each issue edition. The signed Surface Mats are useable as a table, desk top accessory or suitable for framing.» - «Arkitip?s beginnings were humble. While the magazine began with a 50 copy, hand stapled run in late 1999, those first copies look more sophisticated than most other ?zines? you might have considered in the same category. The covers were silk-screened on corrugated cardboard and the docutek used to replicate the black & white art in the magazine rivaled the performance of most offset printers. It had a great homemade feel that was bona fide quality. Excellence in production is still of primary importance to Arkitip today. Artists contributing to the magazine respect this, as they know their art will not be compromised in any way. Today, Arkitip is a hand numbered 4/color art book. The fact that the magazine publishes site specific work at a lower price point than what hangs on gallery walls makes it available to art collectors of all economic levels. Each issue is like an original piece of art in and of itself. The magazine?s founding principles remain as they were when we began:- Support the arts- Promote freedom of expression- Make art affordable and accessibleArkitip Magazine serves these principles every day by its very existence. What began as a creative project between friends has become a full fledged business and a worldwide source for groundbreaking art and design today.5 Things you might not know about Arkitip:Site specific artwork:Arkitip delivers original, site specific artwork in every issue. The assignment for the artists who contribute is to create something original to run in the magazine. Artists have the opportunity to design and layout the art they contribute as well. Making a contribution to Arkitip is like creating your own ?installation? that is then distributed around the world. It?s like a traveling exhibition that you can take home.We put it out there:Supporting freedom of expression has never been an easy thing, but the magazine has successfully published the art of many controversial artists. Some of these artists have contributed work that had never been published before (or since), because it was considered too controversial. Using the magazine as a medium, Arkitip provides artists with a platform for open expression. We believe this helps keep the true spirit of art alive. No compromise:Arkitip is a completely home grown, self-supporting operation. We have complete control over all aspects of the magazine?s content, design, manufacturing, marketing and distribution. This gives us the freedom to feature any type of art we think is relevant because no one is attempting to assert his or her influence. Maintaining autonomy is crucial to Arkitip, as it allows us to create a completely unique and distinctive product. No art snobs:Arkitip accepts artwork from professionals and amateurs, so you don?t have to have an MFA to contribute. The only requirement is that we like the project. Our taste is not the same as the mainstream art establishment, so anyone is eligible. We have literally hundreds of submissions each month so not everyone makes the cut but if you think you have an original project, we?d love to hear about it. The magazine strikes a balance between unknown artists and well-known artists alike. The future:The evolution of Arkitip is vital to its success. We are constantly thinking and re-thinking the role of creativity in our lives and the magazine is currently exploring new avenues to document this.
