Condition: As New. CHAU2154? This is a vintage letter fully hand written by Professor Dr Walter Gerlach which was part of a collection from a medical student in the 1970s and 80s writing to historic doctors and surgeons. It is approx?8" x 6" in mint condition - please note the background sheet also shown in the listing is just?from the album page and for reference but I will send to the purchaser but the letter is a separate loose item which is from 1973 and is fully hand written and signed by Professor Goldblatt. Please see all my other scientist and surgeon autographs from this same collection.Walther Gerlach was a German physicist who co-discovered, through laboratory experiment, spin quantization in a magnetic field, the SternGerlach effect. The experiment was conceived by Otto Stern in 1921 and successfully conducted first by Gerlach in early 1922.?From 1937 until 1945, Gerlach was a member of the supervisory board of the Kaiser-WilhelmGesellschaft (KWG) .On 1 January 1944, Gerlach officially became head of the physics section of the Reichsforschungsrat (RFR, Reich Research Council) and Bevollm???chtigter (plenipotentiary) of nuclear physics, replacing Abraham Esau. In April of that year, he founded the Reichsberichte f???r Physik, which were official reports appearing as supplements to the Physikalische Zeitschrift. After 1946, he continued to be an influential official in its successor organization after World War II, the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (MPG).From May 1945, Gerlach was interned in France and Belgium by British and American Armed Forces under Operation Alsos. From July of that year to January 1946, he was interned in England at Farm Hall under Operation Epsilon, which interned 10 German scientists who were thought to have participated in the development of atomic weapons.

Trade paperback. Condition: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. xxiii, [1], 185, and additional papers with various paginations at the back. The papers are in two groups. Group A. addresses accurate multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations of atomic structure and radiative properties. Group B. presents rigorous treatment of effects from non-spherical perturbations from the nucleus and external magnetic fields on radiative atomic spectra. The content of these papers are briefly described in the Summary of Publications. This work contains a "Popular Summary" in Swedish, Figures. Footnotes. Formulae. Tables. Bibliography. List of Acronyms. Some illustrations have color. Acronyms. Cover has small edge tear. Author inscription inside front cover. Inscription reads To Charlotte from Jon, Thanks for Everything! Lund 20/10 2016 [with a drawing of a flower]. This was inscribed the day before the author's successful dissertation/thesis defense. This is a thesis on atoms and ions; how the atomic electrons interact with each other, with the nucleus, as well as with external magnetic fields, and ultimately how atomic systems interact with light for the purpose of studying laboratory and astrophysical spectra. This work was performed as the Department of Physics at Lund University and defended on the 21st of October 2016. Dr. Grumer is now an astrophysicist and theoretical atomic physicist at Uppsala University in Sweden. He specializes in fundamental atomic structure calculations with a particular focus on atomic processes in relation to astrophysical spectroscopy to aid in our understanding of stars and their environments, the evolution of chemical elements and the history of the Milky Way, as well as the possible origin of heavy elements in neutron-star merger gravitational wave events. In addition to atomic structure calculations, he also carries out various types of experiments, in particular, of charge-exchange processes in low-energy collisions between iron-peak elements and hydrogen at the cryogenic double electrostatic storage ring, DESIREE, at Stockholm University, Sweden. Furthermore, he works with the management of the VALD atomic and molecular database, and he is also a board member of the Computation Atomic Physics (CompAS) collaboration on the teaching and development of multiconfigurational atomic structure methods and codes. Many of these codes, including the GRASP atomic structure code, are now being developed and regularly updated in a fully open-source fashion under the CompAS GitHub account.

First edition of this overview of the evolution of atomic physics, focusing on the discovery and understanding of elementary particles. Octavo, original publisher's cloth. Boldly signed by Chen Ning Yang on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with minor toning to the spine. Illustrated with black and white drawings and pictures. Rare and desirable signed. Yang begins by tracing the early identification of subatomic particles, such as electrons, protons, and neutrons, highlighting the experimental and theoretical advancements that led to their discovery. He emphasizes the collaborative interplay between experimental findings and theoretical frameworks, demonstrating how each has propelled the other forward. A pivotal aspect of the book is the discussion of parity violation, a groundbreaking concept that Yang, along with Tsung-Dao Lee, introduced in 1957. This theory challenged the previously held notion that physical processes are symmetrical, revealing that certain subatomic interactions differentiate between left and right orientations. The experimental confirmation of parity violation marked a paradigm shift in the understanding of fundamental physical laws.

With full text of the official report with New and Enlarged edition, including statements by the British and Canadian Governments. This is signed by Arthur H Compton on The Title Page, he was the Nobel Peace Prize in 1927 for Physics. Also, n 1941 Compton was appointed Chairman of the National Academy of Sciences Committee to Evaluate Use of Atomic Energy in War. His investigations, carried out in cooperation with E. Fermi, L. Szilard, E. P. Wigner and others, led to the establishment of the first controlled uranium fission reactors, and, ultimately, to the large plutonium-producing reactors in Hanford, Washington, which produced the plutonium for the Nagasaki bomb, in August 1945. (He also played a role in the Government s decision to use the bomb; a personal account of these matters may be found in his book, Atomic Quest a Personal Narrative, 1956.) He is referenced 17 times in this book and was the one who appointed Oppenheimer in 1942. In June 1942, the United States Army Corps of Engineers assumed control of the nuclear weapons program and Compton's Metallurgical Laboratory became part of the Manhattan Project. That month, Compton gave Robert Oppenheimer responsibility for bomb design. Signed by Author(s).

Add to basketA presentation copy of this authoritative textbook, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Miss Helen Joan Smith, PhD, with many thanks for kind assistance. Edinburgh, 9 May 1952. Max Born". Smith's research on diamond lattices is cited on page 247. She also collaborated with Born on their 1942 paper, "Quantum Theory and Diffuse X-Ray Reflexions". Smith received her PhD in 1947 from the University of Edinburgh, where Born was Tait Professor of Natural Philosophy until his retirement in 1952; this was likely the occasion that prompted this inscription. She also collaborated with the crystallographer, Kathleen Lonsdale. Written while Born was teaching at St John's College, Cambridge, Atomic Physics soon became the standard work on the subject. It was first published in 1935. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, front cover framed in blind. Cockling to cloth, spine ends and corners gently bumped, edges lightly foxed: a very good copy.
