The first edition of the Opera was published in 1877 by George Routledge & Sons. l Walter Crane (1845-195) was one of the great innovative British book illustrators, along with Kate Greenaway and Randolph Caldecott. In the early years he got his main inspiration from illuminated medieval manuscripts, Japanese prints and the pre-Raphaeli.

Evans was a wood-engraver and full-colour printing, and worked to produce many classic children's books.Evans and Crane begun working together in 1863, and the begun collaborating in 1851 to produce two or three toy books for children each year for over ten years. In the publisher's original paper vellum backed cloth covered boards. Externally, smart. Light handling marks to paper vellum, with bumping to back strip head and tail.
