This is the first edition in Italian containing the lives of 80 doges based on Marcello's research into manuscript traditions and first hand accounts. Marcello's autobiographies were accompanied by Salvestro Girelli's story of four doges and Giorgio Benzone's three. Two additional authors are placed at the beginning of the final two chapters. The printer, Plinio Pietrasanta, was an accomplished typographer active in Venice between 1553 and 1560. This edition features Pietrasanta's elegant typesetting and historiated woodcut initials utilizing characteristic Renaissance decoration. Most often and known in early modern printing practices, an editor would work at the request of a printer, publisher, or author and who would then request book privileges from the state. By 1557, Pietrasanta had gained notoriety in his Venetian printing establishment working with the author Girolamo Ruscelli until at least 1555. Pietrasanta's arrangement with Marcello would have been most fortuitous. Fine example of a typical independent partnership and production of print culture in Renaissance Italy.
