Northcote was a prominent late nineteenthcenturypolitician who spent nine years as Tory leader in the House of Commons from 1876 to 1885, almost a forgotten Tory leader in spite of the colossal statue of him in the Central Lobby of the House of Commons, seen by hundreds of visitors every day. Titles within embossed in gilt to spine panel. End papers clean, a little foxed. Front pastedown is signed by 'Sir S N Northcote 1871'.
