The illus take the form of small engravings inserted in amongst the double columns of print; some maps. The print is tiny - probably 5 point in printer's terms. The amount of information contained in this alphabetical dictionary is… of course huge: chemical, biblical, astronomical, anatomical, horticultural, medical, financial, historical and so on, the world as it was for Gladstone, Darwin and Lincoln. I have surmised the date because the chronology at the end of vol 1 concludes with that date. Note: the chronology starts with the year 4,004 BC, when Archbishop Ussher determined the world began - according to biblical precepts. Condition: two squat volumes each 9 cms thick and only 22 cms high. bound in a shiny black cloth. Fore-edges of the text are trimmed roughly but page bindings are sound. All hinges and joints strong.

Samuel Orchart Beeton (2 March 18316 June 1877) was an English publisher, best known as the husband of Mrs Beeton (Isabella Mary Mayson) and publisher of Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management. He launched The English Woman's Domestic Magazine, a pioneering serial for middle-class women, in 1852. His Boy's Own Magazine, published in the UK from 1855 to 1890, was the first and most influential boys' magazine. Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management was published in 1861. Beeton followed it with a series of other self-help textbooks, including Beeton's Book of Needlework, Beeton's Dictionary of Geography, Beeton's Book of Birds, Beeton's Book of poultry and domestic animals? Beeton's Book of Home Pets, Beeton's Book of Anecdote, Wit and Humour, and others. In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, a trifle rubbed. Some slight loss to the marbled paper of the rear board. Hinges strained. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places, with the front free endpaper detached but present.
