Er wurde in Überlingen geboren und zog 1817 von Lindau am Bodensee nach Zürich, wo er 1820 eine eigene Steindruckerei gründete. 1830 gründete er in Schaffhausen eine lithographische Anstalt mit angegliederter Buch- und Kunsthandlung. Er wurde vor allem bekannt für seine Lithographien in den zoologischen Werken von Heinrich Rudolf Schinz. Brodtmanns Arbeiten zeichnen sich durch wissenschaftliche Genauigkeit und einem hohen ästhetischen Anspruch aus.
