The Tony Award-winning musical about two sisters who aspire to be a writer and actress, respectively, seeking success from their basement apartment in New York City's Greenwich Village. After a pre-Broadway try-out at the Forrest Theatre in Philadelphia, Wonderful Town premiered at the Winter Garden on February 25, 1953, starring Rosalind Russell, Edie Adams, and George Gaynes. It is a lighter piece than Bernstein's later works, West Side Story and Candide, but none of the songs have become as popular. Leonard Bernstein's assistant and editor Jack Gottlieb's personal copy of the December 1997 Sotheby's auction catalog of the estate of Leonard Bernstein. Quarto, original pictorial wrappers. With Gottlieb's notes throughout including the hammer price for each lot that sold in the auction. He has also marked the page that has a lengthy quote from him describing a French provincial walnut style folding table in the catalog, "In the inner sanctum - the staging area for super-human accomplishment - stood that table, where the Maestro marked up his performing scores in crystal-clear intricate detail, like a a fine jeweler polishing precious stones. The telephone with its numerous intercom and outreach buttons, was always blinking, blinking. All around were tchotchkes galore: cigarette paraphernalia, a hotel bell, music boxes, kaleidoscopes, gadgets. Photos of family in silver frames. I had never noticed that the table had "cabriole legs." - Jack Gottlieb." Gottlieb worked for Bernstein for more that thirty years, first as his assistant and later as his editor, preparing for publication Bernstein's books, scores, catalogues, programs and jackets. In his memoir âWorking with Bernsteinâ, Gottlieb relayed, âClose to my heart were the editing jobs I did on three of Bernsteinâs popular books. First was âThe Joy of Music,â on which I had the pleasure of working with the genial Henry Simon of Simon and Schuster. The next two books, also S&S publications, were co-edited with gentlemen who have since become distinguished men of letters: Michael Korda on âYoung Peopleâs Concerts for Reading and Listeningâ and Robert Gottlieb (no relation) on âThe Infinite Variety of Musicâ (pp. 22-23). In addition to managing negotiations with Bernsteinâs publishers, Gottlieb managed Bernsteinâs over-booked professional schedule and shared the unique experience of navigating the 20th century American landscape of conducting and composition as a relative minority of Jewish faith and ancestry. In near fine condition. A unique and revealing piece of Bernstein's legacy. American conductor, composer, pianist, music educator, author, and humanitarian Leonard Bernstein is widely considered one of the most important conductors of his time and was the first American conductor to receive international acclaim. According to music critic Donal Henahan, he was "one of the most prodigiously talented and successful musicians in American history". Bernstein was the recipient of many honors, including seven Emmy Awards, two Tony Awards, sixteen Grammy Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement, and the Kennedy Center Honor. As a composer he wrote in many genres, including symphonic and orchestral music, ballet, film and theatre music, choral works, opera, chamber music and works for the piano. His best-known work is the Broadway musical West Side Story, which continues to be regularly performed worldwide, and has been adapted into two (1961 and 2021) feature films.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 1 pages. Published in 1982. Rare Leonard Bernstein collectible piece. A vintage silver-gelatin print of the artist's formal portrait-photograph, signed and inscribed on recto by Leonard Bernstein. Originally produced as such by the Renaissance Man of modern classical music as a memento/souvenir/keepsake for a few selected friends, colleagues, and admirers. The print measures a full 8 X 10 inches. It is NOT a postcard- or "keepsake"-size, which the publisher also printed later. Printed on semi-glossy, archival stock paper in New York City to the highest standards. Enclosed in its own protective plastic sleeve. Eminently suitable for framing. Without DJ, as issued. Presents "Leonard Bernstein Portrait Photograph". A lovely remembrance from the composer/conductor/pianist/educator, who is now justifiably regarded as perhaps the greatest American musical figure of the 20th century. This is the prodigy who wrote "West Side Story", the greatest musical of the 20th century, among other masterpieces too numerous to mention here. "Maestro", the biopic on Bernstein, as controversial and fascinating a figure today as he was in his lifetime, appeared in 2023, with Bradley Cooper in the eponymous role. An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, piece for Leonard Bernstein collectors. This vintage silver-gelatin print is very boldly and beautifully signed and inscribed in black ink-pen on recto by the artist: "With best wishes, Leonard Bernstein". It is signed directly on the print itself, not on a tipped-in page. There is NO recipient named. However, this Souvenir/Keepsake comes from the estate of his close friend and professional colleague: The late Ronald Wilford (who is NOT named), Classical music's most important power broker of the mid- to late-20th century. It would not exist as a sustainable commercial enterprise today were it not for his pioneering work and example: Fifty years at Columbia Artists Management nurturing Who's Who musical geniuses that included James Levine, Seiji Ozawa, Mstislav Rostropovich, Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, Kurt Masur, Sir Colin Davis, Riccardo Muti, Maurizio Pollini, Vladimir Horowitz, Kathleen Battle, Marilyn Horne, and of course, Leonard Bernstein. This is the only such signed and inscribed vintage print available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare signed original print thus. 1 vintage silver-gelatin print. One of the greatest cultural figures of the 20th century. A fine collectible print. Signed by Author.

Briggs chronicles 'Bernstein's meteoric rise, at the age of twenty-five, to the conductorship of the New York Philharmonic' as well as scoring West Side Story, On the Waterfront, and many other major Broadway musicals. Although Briggs depicts Berstein as a happily married family man, by this point he had been having affairs with men and women for many years. It was in California where Bernstein first lived openly as a gay man in the 70's and met Stathis and Ralph. He signed this and two other books with a greeting for his last Christmas before dying in October of 1990. Of particular note is this book's association with the prominent LA gay couple, Ralph Sylvester and Stathis Orphanos. In addition to Stathis's highly regarded photography, the two operated the great fine-press publishing concern, Sylvester & Orphanos. Signed.

Condition: Fine. - An 11 inch high by 14 inch wide photograph by Emmerich Gara depicting Leonard Bernstein seated at a desk with recording equipment to his right, a cigarette pensively held up near his mouth. The great violinist Isaac Stern, seated next to him, reaches towards the score, while the classical music producer and clarinetist David Oppenheim stands at left smoking a pipe. The three, together with a partially visible fourth man, appear to be attentively listening to the playback. Photographed by Cellist Emmerich Gara during a studio recording session, with his name & address stamped on the verso of the photograph. Identified by him on the verso as "Leonard Bernstein & Isaac Stern / CBS Recording Session Spring 1956", the photograph is signed by Gara in pencil on the verso. Fine. The Koussevitzky Foundation commissioned Leonard Bernstein to compose "The Serenade (after Plato's Symposium)" in memory of Serge and Natalie Koussevitzky. Bernstein completed the work for solo violin, strings and percussion on August 7, 1954 and premiered the work in Venice with violinist Isaac Stern and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra on September 12th of that year. Bernstein & Stern subsequently recorded "The Serenade" for Columbia Records with the Symphony of the Air on April 19, 1956. The American clarinetist David Jerome Oppenheim (1922-2007) was also a classical music and television producer, directing the Masterworks division of Columbia Records from 1950 to 1959.Emmerich Gara (b.1901, d.1963). Born in Vienna, Austria in 1901, Gara established lifelong careers as a portrait photographer and professional cellist. Before the outbreak of the Second World War he and his wife emigrated to the United States, where he was hired as cellist for the NBC Orchestra led by Arturo Toscanini. He performed with the orchestra (later called The Symphony of the Air) until his death. From his seat in the front row of the orchestra Gara was in the unique position to photograph all the great conductors and soloists who appeared with the orchestra during this extraordinary period of musical activity. His subjects were captured in performance, rehearsal, and in candid moments during recordings and while socializing.Gara's action portraits were used for record covers, for the Book of the Month Club and in articles in Time, Life and other major magazines around the world.
