Maharaja Ganga Singh succeeded to the gaddi of his ancestors as the 21st Maharaja of Bikaner on 31st August 1887 when he was only seven years old. The Maharaja assumed full powers of government on 16th December 1898. He ruled the state for a period of five decades ? from 1887 to his demise in 1943. Under his rule the city of Bikaner had advanced beyond comprehension ? from a small desert town into a thriving, modern, well-laid-out city. Maharaja Ganga Singh was an intrepid and colourful personality, and had earned a high place in the gallery of great Indian rulers of the era. Executed in Bikaner style, the works have clearly been impacted by Mughal traditions. The artist's observations during his sojourns to Khumbh or at Ganga Sagar Mela or at the famous holy Dargah shrine at Ajmer and the sketches that were made on site were developed into paintings later in the studio. The repertoire also encompasses twenty-four distinct avatars or godly incarnations based on studies of Bhagwat Puran. The book brings alive the richness in the art tradition of Bikaner and offers a journey through an India full of mystery and spirituality through intricately delineated paintings. (jacket).

From the library of naturalist and hunter Malcolm Lyell (1922-2011), who for several decades was managing director and owner of gunmaker Holland and Holland. With a presentation inscription from his Highness Maharajah Singh of Bikaner to Mr and Mrs Lyell on the front free endpaper, dated 1957, also a greeting card signed by the Maharajah loosely inserted. Also loosely inserted is colour headed note paper from the palaces of Lallgarh and Gajner in envelopes, all with the arms in colour. Very rare, we find only a digital version in a public library.
