This publication was called "the Bookbinder" from 1887-1890, (the first 3 volumes), with this first edition the first to become "The British Bookmaker" in 1891. A very nice copy.

From 'Fine Printing: Its Inception, Development, and Practice', by George Joyner, (1895): 'A lengthy diatribe on the phenomenal growth and success of the 'British Printer' would be superfluous in view of the fact that its position as the foremost exponent of the art in Great Britain is universally admitted. The extent of its influence in the development of fine printing is without parallel, and its valuable work is well known to and highly appreciated by all fine printers. As previously stated, it gave extended effect to the style of typography instituted by Mr. [George] Jones; it also rendered much service to the craft by reproducing, or inserting as supplements, many of the best examples of the work of the printers of this and other countries ; promoted emulation by its excellent job com petitions, besides ably exemplifying the various improvements in process engraving." This volume was owned by the Yorkshire bookbinder Martin E Thorpe who trained at Leeds College of Technology in the 1950s and founded the binders Etherington Thorpe & Co. Ltd. The book has been recently rebound in half black morocco over pebbled cloth, red spine label with gilt lettering, raised bands, green marbled endpapers, marbled edges to the text block. Peter Edes (1756-1840) was a colonial American printer and son of Boston printer, Benjamin Edes, who along with his partner, John Gill, published The Boston Gazette, which is credited with instigating the Boston Tea Party and rallying support for the American cause. Peter Edes, who was one of the participants in the Boston Tea Party, was arrested for his support of the patriot cause two days after the Battle of Bunker Hil and was imprisoned for 104 days. After the war, Edes removed to Augusta, Maine, where he established the first printing house in the state.
