Bulla, an amateur astronomer and friend of Angelo Secchi, had an observatory built at his home between the Quirinal and Viminal hills in Rome, equipped with state-of-the-art instruments for the study of meteorology and climatology, his main interest and passion. The large dome at the top of his tower housed a telescope by Merz of Munich with an aperture of 76mm and a length of 1.3m, four ocular lenses, and an Equatorial mount by the Officina Galileiana of Florence. The five, vivid chromolithographic plates, after original photographs, depict various astronomical events observed by Bulla from his observatory, namely the appearance of the planets Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus with the Moon on the evening of 3March 1881; the Great Comet of 1882, observed on 15November of the same year; the transit of Venus across the solar disk on 6December 1882; the peak of the total lunar eclipse on the evening of 4October 1884; and the morning twilight at its maximum intensity in 1883 and 1884, all depicted above delightful rooftop views of Rome. The original lithographic wrapper depicts Bulla's observatory within an elaborate frame incorporating portraits of Copernicus, Galileo, Giovanni Santini (17871877), and Angelo Secchi (18181878) and vignettes of the Bianchini, Herschel, and the Paris telescopes. No copies on OCLC or Library Hub. OPAC SBN finds only five copies in Italian libraries. Language: Italian.

Label of Adolphe Bordes on the recto on the final blank. Louis IX of France (1214-1270) was later canonized as Saint Louis for his zealotry; his reign is a peak of the French middle ages. At the age of 12, Louis became king after the death of his father, and his mother, Blanche of Castile, was regent until he came of age in 1234. Louis died in Tunis during a crusade, and in 1297, Pope Boniface proclaimed him a saint. This extraordinary arc was described in 1309 by Jean de Joinville. Why, then, was a new edition brought forth some three centuries later? Claude Ménard found in Laval a previously unpublished manuscript of Joinville's life of St. Louis, along with several Latin texts related to the process of his canonization. He consequently brought out a much-improved edition. Ménard's endeavors on the subject were not, however, coincidental. With the death of Henry IV his son Louis became king at the age of 8. Henry's widow, Marie de' Medici (1575-1642) served as her son's regent until 1614. The mirroring of the early years of Louis IX can hardly be ignored (indeed, the portraits of Louis IX and XIII literally face one another), and so with hope of a second golden age under a beloved boy-king, Ménard dedicated the work to his namesake. Florentine Marie was never fully accepted by the French aristocracy. She kept her own cadre of Italians at court, and was in turn viewed with suspicion as a bourgeois foreigner. By the age of 15, Louis XIII had consolidated enough power to shake of the maternal yoke, and with the "coup de majesté" banished Marie from court (under house-arrest at Blois) in April of 1617. Clovis Ève (ca. 1565-1635) followed his father Nicolas as relieur du roi (royal bookbinder), and is best known for these bindings "à semis" (or semées) viz. gridded with fleurs-de-lis and interspersed with the monograms and arms of their owners. The fate of all royal material hinges, notionally, on the French Revolution. Adolphe Bordes compiled a library with a special interest in French religious texts and heraldry and wrote on his booklabel that he acquired the volume from the library of William Beckford. This is lot 1190 in the second portion of his legendary 1882 Sotheby's sale. The book then came to be owned by Jacques Guérin, in whose Hôtel Drouot sale (7 June 1990) the present copy was lot 29. Guérin was one of the great twentieth-century French bibliophiles, and is best known as a collector of Proust (he owned the manuscripts of À la recherche du temps perdu). Its final owner before its acquisition (his sale, Christie's London, 15 June 2015, lot 101) was Jean Bonna, the renowned collector of early French first editions (especially illustrated), and he had a nonpareil collection of them. Er ist verheiratet und hat zwei Kinder. Eric van der Wal ist Mitglied bei niederländischen Vereinigung von Kleinverlegern und Pressendruckern Drukwerk in de Marge, in der Grafiekgroep Bergen (früher Grafisch Genootschap Drukkerstroost) und im Kunstenaarscentrum Bergen (KCB). Seine Grafiken und Bücher sind in zahlreichen Ausstellungen in den Niederlanden und in anderen europäischen Ländern gezeigt worden. 1992 verlieh das niedersächsische Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Kultur in Anerkennung seiner besonderen Verdienste um die Förderung neuer Literatur aus Niedersachsen Eric van der Wal einen Sonderpreis des Niedersächsischen Künstlerstipendiums. Eric van der Wals Grafiken und Bücher sind in vielen öffentlichen Sammlungen zu finden, unter anderem in der Leibniz Bibliothek (Niedersächsische Landesbibliothek) in Hannover, in der Bibliothek des Deutschen Literaturarchivs Marbach und des Lyrik-Kabinetts München, im Klingspor-Museum, in der Königlichen Bibliothek der Niederlande in Den Haag sowie der Zeeuwse Bibliotheek in Middelburg. Regelmäßig angekauft werden sie vom Museum Meermanno-Westreenianum in Den Haag, das eine vollständige Sammlung der Bücher besitzt. Werk Als bildender Künstler hat Eric van der Wal sich nach Gouachen und Collagen vor allem auf die Druckgrafik konzentriert und ein umfangreiches, oft ausgestelltes ¼uvre geschaffen. Nach anfänglichen Vogel- und Tiermotiven sind immer wieder Meer, Küste und Landschaft seiner holländischen Heimat, aber auch der Bretagne und Normandie Gegenstand seiner Radierungen, Holz- und Linolschnitte. Dabei experimentiert er nicht nur mit verschiedenen Druckträgern (Holzlatten, Wellpappe u. a.), sondern überführt in vielen Werkserien die zunächst realistisch erfassten Motive in expressiv aufgeladene, der Abstraktion nahe kommende Bildwelten. Elemente der Landschaft (zum Beispiel Zäune, Gatter, Brücken) werden so zu grafischen Formen und Strukturen jenseits ihrer Gegenständlichkeit, die sich oft als Buchstaben oder reduzierte Zeichen lesen lassen.[1] Seine Arbeit als Büchermacher, Pressendrucker und Kleinverleger begann 1961 mit dem Druck von Gedichten seines Vaters Theo J. van der Wal (Vijf verzen), eines holländischen Schriftstellers, Journalisten und Kritikers, der in den Folgejahren sein literarischer Berater bei der Auswahl der Manuskripte war. Nach dessen Tod übernahm 1984 der deutsche Autor Hans Georg Bulla als Lektor und Herausgeber diese Arbeit und bestimmt seitdem auch das literarische Profil mit.[2] Seit der Herausgabe des Buchs Hommage à von Karlhans Frank 1968 druckt und verlegt Eric van der Wal fast ausschließlich Manuskripte deutschsprachiger Autoren aus der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, der damaligen DDR, aus der Schweiz aus Luxemburg und Österreich, in aller Regel Erstausgaben und oft genug Debüts. Diese Besonderheit seiner verlegerischen Tätigkeit hat ihm den Titel eines Außenposten neuer deutscher Literatur in Holland[3] eingetragen. Zu seinen Autorinnen und Autoren zählen unter andern Hugo Dittberner, Maria Beig, Hannelies Taschau, Guntram Vesper, Hermann Kinder, Johann P. Tammen, Richard Pietraß, Peter Gosse, Henning Ziebritzki und Bert Strebe. Seit Bestehen seiner Presse hat er fast zweihundert Titel verlegt, jeweils in einer Auflage von sechzig bis neunzig Exemplaren, dazu produzierte er zahlreichen Einblatt-, Widmungs- und Privatdrucke. Kein Buch gleicht dabei dem anderen: Für jeden neuen Text wird eine eigenständige, spezifische Buch- und Grafikidee verwirklicht, so dass beispielsweise Buchobjekte (aus Holz, in Pappschachteln) und in vielfältiger Weise illustrierte oder mit Beigaben versehene Bücher entstehen. Gedruckt werden die trotz aller buchkünstlerischen Experimentierfreudigkeit im Mittelpunkt stehenden Texte auf einer Dresdener Victoria Tiegelpresse aus den 1920er Jahren.[4] Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 200.
