Ce n'est ici pas d'abord le penseur chrétien qui, fort de ses convictions, interroge l'athéisme et le met en demeure de s'expliquer et de se justifier, mais le contraire. Inversion de taille qui signifie que la théologie se construit dans l'ouverture, par la confrontation et à travers le dialogue. Ce n'est pas une fois construite en système que la théologie s'expose à la critique, c'est en se confrontant à celle-ci qu'elle s'élabore, en demeurant ainsi en recherche, ouverte aux questions inédites et aux aspirations encore balbutiantes. L'athéisme n'est pas seulement chez Gagnebin ce qui donne du grain à moudre à des théologiens en manque de stimulation, il est ce qui purifie la foi chrétienne elle-même. Et la confrontant à autre chose, l'athéisme relativise la foi dans ses énoncés dogmatiques et ses pratiques ; il la libère ainsi de l'esprit d'orthodoxie qui trop souvent l'étrangle. En l'appelant à plus de justesse doctrinale, l'athéisme sauve aussi la foi de l'obscurantisme qui l'étouffe. En dénonçant ses chimères et ses faux dieux, il la renvoie à l'Evangile lui-même, par-delà les institutions chrétiennes et ecclésiales. Laurent Gagnebin nous offre dans ces ouvrages le récit d'une interrogation libre, sans faux-semblant, ni concession facile ; une mise en question radicale, stimulante et provocatrice, qui place chacun en demeure de s'expliquer sur ce qu'il pense, sur ce qu'il croit et ne croit pas. Non sans une juste fierté, Gagnebin rappelle que Simone de Beauvoir après avoir rechigné à lire le manuscrit d'un jeune théologien analysant son uvre lui écrivit : "On me lira mieux vous ayant lu"; Voir le sommaire sur photos jointes. Das scharf profilierte Gesicht mit höckeriger Nase und buschigen Brauen ist von einem ebenso buschigen . Bart umrahmt. Die Kleidung beschränkt sich auf Hemd und Hose, die von einem baumelnden Strick gehalten wird. Er wälzt den Stein im Schweiße seines Angesichts: die dicken Tropfen fallen dicht von Stirn und Glatze herab, um im Staub des Weges aufzuspritzen. Die Deutung ist nicht schwer.
