Published by Galleria Schwarz, Milano, Italy, 1968
Seller: Cy Fern Books, Santa Fe, NM, U.S.A.
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. A compact and compelling grouping of European avant-garde exhibition material centered around Galleria Schwarz and the postwar Dada revival. From the personal library of Nathaniel Tarn (1928-2024), poet, anthropologist, translator, and a distinctive literary figure of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Educated in anthropology in Paris under Claude Lévi-Strauss and later at the University of Chicago, Tarn conducted fieldwork among the Maya of Guatemala and in Burma before turning increasingly toward a life devoted to literature and cultural criticism. He was widely recognized for his own poetry, for his influential translations of Pablo Neruda and other major international writers, and for his role in introducing world literature to English-language audiences. Tarn maintained close associations with leading figures of the Surrealist movement, including André Breton and Marcel Duchamp, and his work reflects a lifelong engagement with Surrealism, anthropology, mythology, ecology, and cross-cultural exchange. This volume formed part of Tarn's working library and was acquired through the dispersal of his personal collection, offering a direct connection to the intellectual and literary milieu that shaped his remarkable career. The group includes a 1968 Alik Cavaliere exhibition catalogue (Galleria Schwarz, Milan), featuring text by Guido Ballo and photographs by Ugo Mulas, presenting one of Italy's most innovative sculptors of the period. Accompanying the catalogue is an original mailed exhibition postcard addressed to Nathaniel Tarn at Jonathan Cape, London, complete with Italian postage and typed address?an excellent piece of intact gallery correspondence linking Tarn directly to the Schwarz circle. Also included are period gallery handouts, including a Galleria Schwarz sheet from Art '72 Basel and a "Small Dada Anthology" checklist featuring key figures such as Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Hannah Höch, Raoul Hausmann, and others. These pieces provide strong contextual grounding in the Dada and neo-avant-garde networks that Schwarz actively promoted. Rather than a single publication, this is a curated grouping of catalogue and original exhibition ephemera, offering a snapshot of how avant-garde material circulated between Milan, Basel, and London during this period. A desirable lot for collectors of Dada, Duchamp-related material, European avant-garde galleries, or provenance-rich items connected to Nathaniel Tarn. Author Guido Ballo, Ugo Mulas Publisher Galleria Schwarz, Milan Year 1968, 1972 Special attributes Exhibition catalogue, original mailed invitation card, Tarn provenance, Dada-related ephemera, gallery handouts Topic Dada, Italian sculpture, European avant-garde, exhibition history Subject Art history, Marcel Duchamp circle, postwar European art Keywords Alik Cavaliere, Galleria Schwarz Milan, Dada anthology, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, avant garde art, Nathaniel Tarn provenance, exhibition ephemera Condition Very good. Hardcover. Condition: gut. 2001. Januar 1948 in Ambleside/Westmoreland verstarb. Kurt Schwitters was one of the most influential, groundbreaking, and forward-looking artists of international Modernism-yet only certain areas of his immensely diverse oeuvre have been thoroughly investigated and catalogued. His has now been properly and fully documented for the first time, in a landmark three-volume catalogue raisonn, which is particularly notable for bringing to light many of Schwitters' previously unpublished pictorial work, including collages, drawings, and paintings. This first volume covers the artist's early years, with little-known works form the period prior to World War I, as well as the earliest MERZ pieces he created between 1918 and 1922. Schwitters' works are here organized chronologically and, within years, according to genre, and the book also features a detailed illustrated biography of the artist 997 Abb., 104 farb.
