Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hilton, James. GOODBYE MR. CHIPS. London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1934. First Edition. A Near Fine copy in a Very Good edge-worn dust jacket still sporting the original publisher's wraparound band. PRESENTATION COPY FROM JAMES HILTON TO ETHEL "BIP" PARES (1904-1977), FAMED ILLUSTRATOR OF GOODBYE MR CHIPS and one of the leading British Art Deco dust jacket designers of the 1930s: "To Bip Pares, who saw her Chips as I did -- With all good wishes from James Hilton, October 1934." [With:] A framed and glazed ORIGINAL PEN & INK ILLUSTRATION ON ART BOARD for GOODBYE MR. CHIPS, a discarded variant of the first (of four) illustrations in the novel -- this one featuring Chips meeting his wife while climbing the Lake District's Great Gable (image size measures 4 ½" by 3 ½"). Along with the book and the illustration is an archive of other materials including an Autograph Letter, Signed, in which Bip Pares gives the history of her involvement with the novel; this includes the surprising revelation that after she illustrated the initial periodical appearance of GOODBYE MR. CHIPS -- it was she who suggested to Osgood & McIlvaine that GOODBYE MR. CHIPS deserved book publication and she agreed (for five guineas) to provide virtually every design element of the first edition's physical appearance. Further, the archive contains newspaper clippings retained by the illustrator pertaining to the novel's success as well as a later newspaper account of James Hilton's death in 1954. Finally, added to this collection, is a fine first edition copy in fine dust jacket (signed) of the sequel TO YOU, MR CHIPS (London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1938) with another round of beautiful illustrations by Bip Pares. The 1939 film adaptation starring Robert Donat and Greer Garson was nominated for ten Oscars (winning three) and remains one of the best loved and most enduring British films of all time. Housed in a custom slipcase. Bip Pares (illustrator). Inscribed by Author(s).…

Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Small 8vo. Blue cloth with gilt lettering. 128pp. Illustrations, pictorial endpapers. Very good. Very slightest of binding edgewear; bit of foxing to page edges and occasional leaf; lacks dust jacket. Tight and bright first edition of the English novelist's best-known work, basis for the popular 1939 romantic drama film starring Robert Donat and Greer Garson. Tipped to inner flyleaf is a choice autograph addition: Typed Note Signed from Hilton, 1p, 7½" X 10", Burbank, CA, 10 July 1939. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar). Near fine. Two original folds. On "Warner Bros." letterhead (for Hilton was writing the screenplay for his 1937 novel "We Are Not Alone" for Warner Bros., who produced the 1939 film version), Hilton sends "Many thanks for writing to me and for sending me your bookmark. I appreciate this and consider it an excellent method of tieing up the literary and cinema angles." Boldly signed in full in black ink. 1939 was the year in which the film "Good-Bye, Mr. Chips" was released, so whatever the bookmark that Gates sent Hilton, he likely suggested a bookmark that linked Hilton's 1934 novel with the just-released film version of it.…

Contact seller5-star sellerdj. First English edition of James Hilton's tale of the shy schoolmaster Mr. Chipping, who over the course of a long career becomes a legend at Brookfield, "a good school of the second rank." Deeply Victorian in sympathy, "Mr. Chips" rises to the challenge of the First World War, and survives into the 1930s, beloved by generations of boys: "In my mind you never grow up at all. Never." Originally issued as a supplement to The British Weekly in 1933, Goodbye, Mr. Chips was reprinted in The Atlantic in April 1934, followed by book publication in the United States in June and England in October; the nostalgic novel was a runaway bestseller during the Depression, inspiring the Oscar-winning 1939 Hollywood film starring Robert Donat. This first English edition is wonderfully illustrated by Ethel "Bip" Pares, one of England's leading Art Deco book designers. Accompanied by two typed letters written and signed by Hilton, during his stint as a Hollywood screenwriter, to prolific Chicago-based author and anthologist Marjorie Barrows (1892-1983), regarding reprint rights for his short story "Mr. Chips Meets a Star" in The Family Reader. This was likely Barrows's personal copy of Goodbye, Mr. Chips, as Hilton's letters were once secured (via paper clip and tape) to the opening pages. A very good copy, with signed "Mr. Chips" correspondence laid in. Single volume, measuring 7.5 x 5.5 inches: 127, [1]. Original royal blue cloth lettered in gilt, endpapers printed in blue with Latin quotations, original unclipped pictorial dust jacket printed in blue and black. Title page printed in blue and black; black-and-white illustrations throughout text. Traces of tape to boards, endpapers, and front flyleaf; jacket lightly soiled, tape repairs to verso, shallow chips to head of spine and rear panel. WITH: two typed letters to Marjorie Barrows signed by Hilton, the first dated 1946 and measuring 8.5 x 7 inches, the second dated 1948 and measuring 5.75 x 6.5 inches. Signed.…
