Add to basketHardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. This fascinating and comprehensive collection surveys the life of an extraordinary medieval woman. Christina of Markyate made a vow of chastity at an early age, against the wishes of her parents who intended her to marry. When forced into wedlock, she fled in disguise and went into hiding, receiving refuge in a network of hermitages. Christina became a religious recluse and eventually founded a priory of nuns attached to St. Albans. Samuel Fanous and Henrietta Leyser present a vivid inter-disciplinary study devoted to the life, work and extant vita of Christina of Markyate, which draws on research from a wide range of disciplines. Key topics have been selected in a balanced and comprehensive approach; they cover timeless themes, such as monasticism and eremiticisim, as well as topical matters in medieval research, such as gender issues. The book begins by introducing readers to Christina's person and life, setting her in a cultural, social and religious context, and presenting the literary background of The Life of Christina of Markyate.Further chapters examine themes such as the two traditions of martyrdom, virgin and ascetic, and Christina's alignment with both, the presentation of sanctity and sexual temptation in the twelfth century, and a survey of the phenomena of hermits and anchorites. The book also includes a close reading of the vita, revealing its markedly hagiographical qualities, and a discussion of the drama of the initials on the St. Alban's Psalter and what this reveals about the relationship between Christina and Abbot Geoffrey. Beautifully illustrated, this book provides students who regularly encounter Christina with a research compendium from which to begin their studies, and introduces Christina to a wider audience. Add to basketCloth. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Not Stated (illustrator). First edition. A very smart first edition of this illustrated reproduction of the St. Albans Psalter from art historian Jane Geddes. First edition. Illustrated with hundred of in-text images, many of which are in colour. The St. Albans Psalter is an English illuminated manuscript, one of several psalters known to have been created at or for St. Albans Abbey in the twelfth century. This is the first study to reproduce so much of the Psalter in colour, fully integrating the contents into the historical context of its probable patron, Abbot Geoffrey of St. Albans. Its recipient Christina of Markyate was an anchoress, who came from a wealthy English family trying to accommodate with the Normans at that time. She later became the prioress of a community of nuns. Written by Jane Geddes, a British art historian and academic, specialising in Scottish architecture, British Medieval manuscripts, Pictish sculpture and Medieval decorative ironwork In the original full cloth binding. Externally, excellent. Original unclipped dust wrapper is also excellent. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. Fine. book.

From the blurb: "The St. Albans Psalter, made in the 1130s, is one of the great monuments of English Romanesque painting and has survived the disasters of religious upheaval and war in pristine condition. The sequence of forty full-page miniatures illustrating the Life of Christ establishes their artist, the so-called Alexis Master, as one of the most influential painters in early twelfth-century England. It includes 215 initials illustrating the psalms in a vigorously literal way. Their inventiveness and charm belie the complex theological and personal messages which they convey." "This new book by Dr. Jane Geddes is the first to reproduce so much of the psalter in colour, but it also fully integrates the psalter's contents into the historical context of its probable patron, Abbot Geoffrey of St. Albans and its recipient, the Anglo-Saxon hermitess Christina of Markyate. Using a record of Christina's life, written by a St. Albans monk, the book examines in depth every aspect of the psalter, tying it in closely to the lives of Christina of Markyate and Abbot Geoffrey. Through her close analysis, Geddes provides a profound insight into female literacy, Anglo-Norman relations, the organization of England's premier scriptorium, monk-nun relations and the emerging Anglo-Norman language. This new book demonstrates the significance of the St. Albans Psalter, which in social terms is as important as the Bayeux Tapestry, crystallising the artistic, spiritual and emotional integration of Anglo-Saxons and Normans."
