An excellent overview of naval and military activities from 1856 to 1862 in the Far East. During the Crimean War a Russian squadron was pursued by a small British contingent, but as a result of the latter's ignorance of the local coastline the Russians were able to make their way to the safety of the Amur river. In 1856 the British sent two survey vessels to the region, and the author was a surveyor on board one of them, H.M.S. Actaeon. The vessels' assistance during the Second Opium War helped to establish British influence in the area, and the survey work extended to the coasts of Taiwan, Japan, Korea and Manchuria. The illustrations include a large extending panorama of Hong Kong, and charts of the Actaeon's tracks during the period.

xx, 353 pp. Quarto. Rebound in old blue cloth boards. Gilt lines and lettering on the spine. Spine is sunned. Back board has some shelf wear. Edges trimmed and somewhat dust soiled. Inside, the end papers are rather stained. Booksellers stamps and labels on the back paste down. This book includes 19 maps (17 are folding) and is profusely illustrated with plans, charts, sketches, paintings and photographs. There is occasional staining and foxing throughout the volume. A nice copy of a very interesting title. This book describes the surveying voyage of H. M. S. Actaeon between 1857 and 1862. This book was written by the surveying officer on that voyage, William Blakeney. This volume contains chapters on the Chu Kiang (Canton River), Pratas Reef, Formosa, the Korean Strait and the Sea of Japan, and was based on notes that Blakeney had recorded during the voyage. Published forty years after the events described, it was dedicated by the author to "His Excellency the Marquis Hirobumi ITO, G. C. B., four times Premier of Japan and a friend of England since he first landed on its shores nearly forty years ago." A very reasonably priced copy in a more modern binding. As a note of provenance, Lieutenant Commander Andrew David of the Royal Navy was a previous owner of this volume. David was a prominent hydrographic specialist who served with the Hakluyt Society and the Society for Nautical Research. His book plate is on the front free end paper.
