Add to basket52 playing cards (each card c. 88 x 62 mm), double ended courts of H3 design, type 2.1 Ace of Spades, rounded corners, no indices, gold harlequin design to versos; cards a little soiled and rubbed, but a well-preserved set.A lovely and well-preserved complete deck of playing cards by Hunt's Playing Card Manufacturing Company, with a sumptuous design featuring a double-ended harlequin on a gold background. Hunt's Playing Card Manufacturing Co. Ltd was established in 1866 as Joseph Hunt & Sons, set up by a descendant of Hunt as a revival of the old family firm and in competition with Bancks Brothers, who felt they owned the title to the Hunt firm. Though the new Hunts started out using more up-to-date printing methods than Bancks, they failed to adapt and make the design changes that the larger makers did, such as the introduction of indices. Their first courts were double-ended and used earlier Hunt/Bancks courts as the basis for the design; the present set is the third set of courts that the firm produced, in the smaller format and with the rounded corners introduced towards the end of the 1870s. After a fire at their factory in 1874 which destroyed much of the Hunt stock, the firm relocated and changed its name to Hunt's Playing Card Manufactory. The firm ceased trading in 1881 and was finally dissolved in 1887, with the last of the Hunt playing cards produced in Bristol by C.T. Jefferies. The design of the Ace of Spades, with the name of 'Hunt's Playing Card Manufacturing Company Limited', dates to 18751882.

Add to basket52 playing cards (each card c.91 x 63mm), single-ended courts, HB1 pattern, Old Frizzle Ace of Spades incorporating the full royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom with crowned inescutcheon of the arms of Hanover, no indices, blank versos, Ace of Clubs stamped 'superfine' in blue ink; cards a little toned, but a very well-preserved set.An extremely well-preserved complete deck of playing cards by Bancks Brothers. 'Bancks Brothers (Anthony Bancks & Robert Olddiss Bancks, card makers) were successors to Hunt & Sons (1790c.1840) who was the first maker to 'modernise' the court card designs with a complete redrawing, in which some of the idiosyncrasies which had crept into playing card designs were rationalised' (World of Playing Cards, online). This deck has the HB1 pattern, with the single ended courts, the queens with larger noses, and the Jack of Hearts holding a leaf rather than a staff, though with the lower part of the staff stencilled in, as was the case with some early packs. These were the new style of courts inherited from Hunt & Sons: 'These are still full-length figures and the cards have been coloured using brush and stencils. The Jack of Hearts now holds what is clearly a leaf, rather than the top of a staff as in earlier times. The "Old Frizzle" Ace of Spades shows the duty paid as one shilling, and the manufacturer's name is engraved at the bottom of the ace. Shortly after this, Bancks Brothers produced a double-ended version' (ibid.).

Add to basketComplete miniature deck of 52 playing cards, watercolour on card, each c. 25 x 18 mm. on thin card stock, the court cards standing single rather than double headed, the latter convention being accepted in around 1860 in England, though earlier in Europe. Probably of English origin, notwithstanding that they were found in a French flea market by a previous owner; the "duty ace" mimics the English design with the lion [more like a pussy cat] and unicorn as supporters.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Indicator Playing Cards A. Dougherty New York No 50 Indicators, patented in 1883, soon became the standard for use in all Dougherty decks. The first deck in this brand was issued in 1894. They proved to be one of Dougherty's biggest sellers for over 35 years. Several new brands were created using the Indicator Ace of Spades with merely a change of name on the box, also in narrower sized decks for Bridge and Whist, and with various types of Joker. In the example shown here, No.50 appears at the bottom of the Ace of Spades and the cards have corner indices and miniature suit symbols in the corners.
