Both books are in great shape with raised bands and gilt stamping on the spine. The bindings are tight with light wear to the boards. The 18 wood-engraved plates are present including both frontispieces by Henry Valentin before the title pages. The pages are clean with light foxing to a few pages. There is NO writing, marks or bookplates in the books. A wonderful complete set of this First Edition in English SIGNED by the author. Signed by Author(s).

Valentin inc portrait frontis, loss to outer bottom corner but repair done, loosely inserted is a letter signed in full "Alex Dumas to M. Lockroy? of Compiegne 23rd/24th Aout 1833. A single page note on a folded 4 sided sheet, with postage details and circular postal cancels P/U so postally used. The book has the new 20 engravings, 1st thus, it is dis-bound but with preliminary work with new endpapers and sewn spine for repairs and new covers done by a professional binder(bought from a deceased book binder 30+ years ago), there are several plates with some foxing mostly at edges, however the frontispiece is foxed as is the title page, contents most plates clear and fox free as is the text, final leaf has been strengthened at edges with translucent archive Japanese paper and base of the page slightly shorter, and with slight loss to part of 2 words, pages 179-182 have a closed tear to edge in the margins, text not affected, pages have a handled feel but clean, spasmodic light spotting here and there. A good copy of this rare edition with the title lacking the "H" in the name Cristo, changed later to the more familiar "Christo" as used today. NOTE* Ready to be bound to suit the buyer. Octavo.( 8vo) 1854. *NOTE: The contents of the letter, part deciphered is to help someone stay at an estate? to do some fishing and shooting for weddings and celebrations?, the place may be called Turefours? Needs a good French translation. Bought together as one and sold as one. Signed by Author(s).
