Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. G/No DJ,.350 pages 8vo., A well read copy that remains clean, tight and unmarked. The author strives to create a travel narrative different than the typical fare of the day, more based on science and ethnographic clarity. the 53 or so ink drawings by Alexander King fill almost a full page each and are interesting. Several are repeated. The black cloth boards with red tribal motifs to spine and adjacent gutters are clean but showing a few nicks and rubs. The text ends with a rather extensive 8 page bibliography. The author had good connections with staff of the Dutch East India Company which facilitated contact with the cultural groups of the region and therefore the ability to record many of their rituals. Their world has changed drastically in the last 90 years.
