Add to basketSeven pages, on four leaves, plus conjugate with secretarial docket. Folio. Sewn with silk, red wax & paper seal in left margin first page. Light fold marks, otherwise in good clean condition. Folding cloth case. The text is written in a neat secretarial hand, and boldly signed at the top of the first page, 'George P.R.'. Here acting as Prince Regent on behalf of George III, the future George IV authorizes the Great Seal to be affixed to an instrument authorizing three or more of his designated ministers, in company with the Archbishop of Canterbury, to witness and sign a treaty of marriage between his daughter, Princess Charlotte Augusta, and Leopold George Frederick, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfield. Those authorized to witness the contract are: Dudley, Earl of Viscount Castlereagh, and Nicholas Vansittart. The wedding took place on 2 May, but the Princess died in childbirth on 5th November 1817. Her untimely death deeply affected her family. Prince Leopold was distraught, and the Princess of Wales (who, living on the continent, had not seen her daughter since 1814) reportedly fainted upon hearing the news. Queen Charlotte wrote to the Prince Regent on 7 November stating 'How painful it is for me to take up my pen at this moment when I had flattered myself to make use of it by giving you joy which it has pleased the Almighty to turn to grief a mourning for us all'. The Prince Regent was so grief stricken that he was unable to attend his daughter's funeral. PLEASE NOTE: For customers within the UK this item is subject to VAT at 20%.

Folio, 2 pp., on a bifolium, with paper seal, unbound and folded as issued. A fine historical transportation document. John Plummer had been convicted at Yarmouth in Norfolk of "stealing in a dwelling house, to the value of 40/- no person being therein, and had sentence of death passed upon him". However, taking into account "some favourable circumstances recently represented to us in his behalf the King was graciously pleased to extend Our Grace & Mercy unto him and to grant him Our Pardon for his said crime on condition of his being transported to the coast of New South Wales or some one or other of the Islands adjacent, for and during the term of fourteen years". Plummer was only 17 years old and his supporters also included the Mayor of Yarmouth and Sarah Plummer, presumably his mother. Plummer left England on 1 April 1822 on the transport Prince of Orange, arriving in Tasmania on 23rd. July. In 1835 he married a convict, Rebecca Cull who had arrived on the America in 1831. It is recorded that he worked as a gardener in Hobart and fathered at least eight children, in 1873 dying there from hepatitis. Much has been published on the British policy of penal transportation to Australia between 1788 and about 1867. The context is well described by A.G.L. Shaw in his "Convicts & the Colonies" (1966). Over 80 years about 160,000 convicts were sent from Great Britain to Australia. . General very minor soiling, a couple of edge tears professionally restored.
