He also served in the U.S. Senate and as U.S. Secretary of the Interior. A sculpture of him is maintained among the two coveted statues apportioned to each state on display under the rotunda in the National Statuary Hall Collection in the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. The stories here are of cases "mentioned in the canon but which, for various reasons, have not been published before, including the theft of the Vatican cameos, the cunning arrest of Huret the Boulevard assassin and the terrible death of Crosby the banker, in which a repulsive red leech played a significant part."
