Print. Limited, numbered, signed. This large 1970s print, numbered and signed by Winston Churchill's daughter, Sarah, is one of a series of twenty-eight intaglio drawings by Curtis Hooper entitled "A Visual Philosophy of Sir Winston Churchill". These prints were produced in two sizes. The larger format, of which this is one, measured 22.5 x 34.5 inches. These large format prints were limited to editions of no more than 400, featuring Hooper's drawing, a limitation number, Sarah's signature, and three blind debossed features - a quotation selected by Sarah beside one of Sarah's simple outline tracings of a Churchill photograph, and the Churchill coat of arms at the lower left. This print features an atomic bomb mushroom cloud, the face of a young boy at the lower left and Churchill's face, partially intermingling with the cloud, at the upper right. During his second and final premiership, it fell to Churchill to preside over the first British atomic weapons test. The debossed quote below reads: "I LOOK TO THE CHILDREN - What would lie before them if God wearied of mankind." Left of the quote is a debossed engraving of Churchill speaking, leaning earnestly forward, his right hand on his hip, pushing back his coat. The print is numbered "250/400" and signed "Sarah Churchill". Condition is fine, with no appreciable wear or soiling apart from a few tiny blemishes at the bottom edge of the lower blank margin.English artist Curtis Hooper (1945-2020) was a longtime admirer of Churchill. His series of Churchill drawings attempted "to depict the many facets of Churchill's complex character" and "covers Churchill's early childhood all the way through his second term as prime minister in the 1950s. Diving into both the public and private sides of Churchill's life, the series balances Churchill's professional years as a soldier and war correspondent, a writer, a rhetorician, and a statesman with his private interests as a painter, aviation enthusiast, horseman, father, and husband."Hooper worked under the auspices of Graphic House Publishing in New Jersey and in tandem with the Churchill family. "Through them, Hooper gained access to both public and private photographs and information as well as audience 'with military leaders from the Second World War, who worked directly with Sir Winston,' helping to paint him a full picture of the man to whom he would devote so much time.""Before her death, Baroness Clementine Spencer Churchill provided helpful thoughts and commentary about Hooper's works. However, Churchill's second daughter, Sarah, Lady Audley, played the largest role in bringing the project to a successful fruition. Sarah hand-signed the entire collection of prints." Although each print had a stated limitation of 400 or less, fewer were actually produced. Sarah then Lady Audley via her third marriage "always signed and numbered together to ensure completion and authenticity."This was not Sarah's only personal touch. "Curtis noticed, as he got to know Sarah, that she would take small pieces of tracing paper and affectionately trace simple outlines of family photos, including her father Hooper decided to include one of Sarah's tracings alongside both signatures and the debossment of the quotation on which each print was based."Sarah's involvement in the selection and quotes seems appropriate. Sarah Millicent Hermione Churchill (1914-1982) was the third child and second daughter of Sir Winston Churchill and Clementine Spencer-Churchill. Among Winston Churchill's children, it was Sarah who seemed most clearly to have inherited some of her father's artistic inclinations. In addition to her acting career, she wrote poetry and a memoir. She also remained close to her father, despite his disapproval of some of her life choices. Sarah accompanied Churchill to several Second World War conferences and "the affection between father and daughter is clear in numerous letters sent during and after the war."Sources: Finest Hour #117 & 120; ICS; The Churchill Project, Hillsdale College; Richard M. Original signed drawing by Munro Leaf (1905-1976), featuring characters from Fair Play, his 1939 storybook on the subject of good citizenship. The little boy, "Justme," characterized by his frown and distinctively drawn baggy pants, serves as an example of selfish, rude behavior throughout the book, shouting in the library and shoving at the water fountain. Leaf warns readers: "one hundred and thirty million people all doing only just what they felt like doing would make an awful mess and no one would be happy." In this drawing, likely created on a publicity stop as a souvenir for a young fan, Leaf juxtaposes Justme with a smiling little girl, one of the characters who exemplifies the "fair play" necessary for a functioning society. Fair Play was a longer work in the manner of Leaf's popular "Can Be Fun" series, which began with Grammar Can Be Fun in 1934, and ran to over a dozen educational titles, all featuring his expressive, immediately recognizable stick figures. Leaf remains best known for his 1936 collaboration with illustrator Robert Lawson, The Story of Ferdinand, the story of a peace-loving bull in rural Andalusia: a tale banned in Franco's Spain, where it was seen as a critique of fascism. Munro Leaf's archive is housed at the Free Library of Philadelphia; his original drawings, especially signed examples, are scarce on the market. A delightful piece. Black Conté crayon on paper, measuring 22.5 x 18.5 inches, sheet size. Signed in red crayon to bottom right margin. Line of dampstaining along bottom margin, hidden by archival mat.

Early 19th-Century Dutch Drawing ? Woman with Children and Baskets, c.1805 Description: A sensitive and well-observed early 19th-century drawing depicting three figures in a rustic domestic setting. At the center, a seated woman rests on a sack and leans on a woven basket while a small child kneels beside her, holding her hand with a gentle expression. Opposite them, a barefoot young woman stands with a large basket propped upright beside her, gazing thoughtfully at an object in her hands ? possibly food or a coin. The relaxed posture, quiet gestures, and warm engagement among the figures suggest a moment of rest or interaction during daily labor. The composition, draftsmanship, and subject matter are all consistent with the early work of Gerardus Johannes Verburgh (1775?1864), a Dutch artist celebrated for his genre drawings and scenes of women and children in rural dress. The piece is executed entirely in black chalk or graphite, and signed faintly at lower right. Of particular interest is the sketched hand in the background, suggesting this work may have been developed from life studies or intended as a compositional exploration. The presence of baskets and humble clothing places the scene firmly in the realm of peasant or working-class life, a favored theme in Northern European art around 1800. The stylistic consistency with Verburgh's authenticated works makes this a strong attribution. The calm balance of the composition and naturalistic human interactions make it highly appealing both as a drawing and as a historical document of early 19th-century life. Condition report: Good condition for its age. Light creasing and a few scattered foxing spots are visible throughout, mostly in the margins. Edges show minor handling wear and a tiny tear at lower right. No restoration. Drawing surface is stable and well-preserved. Framing tips: A simple black or medium walnut frame with a soft white or pale grey mat will highlight the graphite detail without overwhelming the quiet tones. Consider float mounting to preserve the full sheet and show its historical paper edges. Technique: Black chalk or graphite drawing on laid paper Maker: Attributed to Gerardus Johannes Verburgh, The Netherlands, dated 1798.
