Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. First Edition. 306 pp. First Edition March, 15, 1903. "Charles King (1844-1933) was a United States soldier and a distinguished writer. He graduated from West Point in 1866 and served in the Army during the Indian Wars under George Crook. He was wounded in the arm forcing his retirement from the regular army. During this time he became acquainted with Buffalo Bill Cody. King would later write scripts for several of Cody's silents films. In 1898, he was appointed brigadier general of volunteers and sailed to the Philippines during the Spanish-American War; he also led a brigade during the ensuing Philippine-American War. He returned to the United States and was active in the Wisconsin National Guard and in training troops for World War I. He wrote and edited over 60 books and novels, including nonfiction military accounts such as Campaigning with Crook, and Western romances like An Apache Princess and A Daughter of the Sioux. King was the only United States Army officer to write fiction from his own acquaintance with army life and Indian warfare on the plains during 1870-1880. He was a pioneer in writing realistic fiction about the western frontier at a time when the usual western novel was the dime novel. King's depictions of life in the West, though, romanticized, his accounts are accurate descriptions of the day-to-day life of the Army soldier in the garrison and on the frontier." Mylar protected boards. Only the faintest edge wear, else, Pristine. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Red cloth with tipped-in color illustration, black borders and gilt lettering on front board, gilt lettering to spine, and gilt top text block edge. Size: 8vo. Book.
