Instead, she offers a suitable quote from The Merry Wives of Windsor: 'Heaven give you many many merry days.' Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Second Edition. 8vo, red cloth with gilt, rather plain pale blue dust jacket with blue titling and info, (i-v), vi-xi, (xii), (1), 2-381, (382), 6 unnumbered pages of advertising, plus 4 photogravures, a large number of double photographic plates and in-text illustrations (complete). The Second edition of the author's memoir, n.d. but published in 1908 according to most sources. Signed and dedicated by Dame Ellen Terry twice - first at the list of illustrations, in form of a dedication: " Alice Thompson = / "Rosemary for remembrance" / With love from Ellen Terry = / 29 July / 1916 "; then again on the plate facing page 281, "Ellen Terry as Imogen", where she leaves a short comment on her love for the Shakespearean character at the heart of Cymbeline: " Imogen is perhaps my favourite / of all the Shakespeare parts = / I love this character, she is / complete & lovely / E.T. ". A superb signed copy, with the all rare dust jacket. The book is in near fine condition and appears almost unread; both the cloth and the gilt are bright, with absolutely minimal faults. Pages are unblemished, with just a hint of foxing. The extremely rare dust jacket is in good only condition. The spine has browned. The price on the front has been blackened out. Chips are missing from segments of the edges, but mainly at the top and bottom of the spine. Signed by Author(s).

See her entry in the Oxford DNB. On two 11 x 9 cm cards, plain but for the letterhead. Both in good condition, lightly aged. The recipient is not named. The card is signed 'E. T:' and is written in her forceful hand. Begins: 'I have no time - nor words - to tell you "what I think" - "The boys health" indeed! - if there's any use in talking, if signing petitions will do any good one would talk & sign all day! but in spite' - here the reverse of the first card begins, and the side is entirely deleted, except for the last line'. The deleted passage continues from the first side: 'of all protests I feel it in my bones the thing is inevitable money is at the bottom of it all - this is a vulgar age, & all beauty is being chased from off the Earth The Cathedrals will be a Grand [pill?] for the despoiler'. The undeleted text continues: ' 'I will sign any protest you may make against the wicked deed: - but it comes under no Act at all, & it means money & hypocrisy the [whole thing?]'. She concludes by explaining that she is 'trying to write two notes, & three good souls are talking to me at the same time.' Postscript: 'Have you influence I wonder in "Military Circles"? I have none -'. See Image, pp.1 & 4.

Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Preface by George Bernard Shaw. First edition, first printing. Signed and inscribed by Hemingway to his cousin Ruth White Lowry on the front free endpaper, with reference to the previous owner, Hemingway bibliographer Captain Louis Henry Cohn: "Dear Ruth: - This is really a 2nd hand book because it was the gift of Captain Louis Henry Cohn the great bibliographer - Pauline didn't like it but Shaw and Terry and Capt. Cohn and Lawrence Stallings all did so you may find something in it - I have not read it - They must have been very sure how great they were or very careful to have kept all the letters and been able to find them - Ernest." Publisher's red cloth, with front board and spine lettered in gilt, red topstain; lacking dust jacket. Very good, with toning to spine and board edges, heavy dimming to spine gilt, some very light scratches to rear board, small House of Books ticket (Captain Cohn's bookshop) to rear pastedown. Overall, a uniquely inscribed copy, with exceptional provenance. From the personal library of Hemingway's cousin, Ruth White Lowry. This book is a collection of correspondence between the great Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950) and leading English actress Ellen Terry (1847 - 1928). In 1892, Ellen reached out to Shaw, then a 36-year-old music critic, to get his opinion on the career prospects of a musical protégé of hers. This began a roughly 30-year correspondence between the two, which was marked by flirtation, genuine affection, and Shaw's repeated attempts to lure Ellen away from Henry Irving's productions at Lyceum Theatre to star in theatrical productions of his own work. With praise from its New York Times review: "It represents the very flower of the minds and hearts-the select harvest of sentiment and wit-of two of the most remarkable personages of our generation." Captain Louis Henry Cohn (1889- 1953), born in Brooklyn, New York, earned his military rank by fighting in the French Army during World War I. In 1930, Cohn wrote a letter to Hemingway, asking him for permission to compile a bibliography of his works. Hemingway begrudgingly agreed, and in 1931 the book, A Bibliography of the Works of Ernest Hemingway, was published: in a note from Hemingway to Cohn, which was later included as the frontispiece of the bibliography, Hemingway wrote, "I think it all balls to publish bibliographies of living writers". Later, Cohn and his wife, Marguerite, opened House of Books, a successful bookshop specializing in modern first editions. Under the House of Books imprint, Cohn published an edition of Hemingway's short story "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen" (1933) limited to 300 numbered copies, and a facsimile of Hemingway's "Bastard Note"-a legal disclaimer page included in the second printing of A Farewell to Arms, with a humorous note to the printer in Hemingway's hand-limited to 93 numbered copies. Signed.

First edition. A superb association copy of this early illustrated work from English theater designer, Edward Gordon Craig (1872-1966). Contains two pieces of correspondence from the Craig family, the book likely being owned by Edward's (EGC from here on) sister, Edith Craig (1869-1947). The first letter is from the publisher, Herbert S. Stone, to EGC and Edith's mother and subject of the book, Ellen Terry (1847-1928). Stone (Ca.1871-1915) was an innovative publisher in New York in the 1890's first with Stone & Kimball, and then under his full name. He launched two successful magazines, including the influentialChap-Book,which ran from 1894-1898. He published the landmark feminist novel,The Awakening,by Kate Chopin. He also was a casualty on the Lusitania, going down with the ship on that fateful day in 1915. The letter is quite interesting in content, discussing the royalty payments to EGC for his book. He mentions hoping the book could be sold in theatres, but "Mr. Bram Stoker got ahead of us with a book of his own so that we have to rely entirely on the book shops." Stoker at the time was Henry Irving's manager and director of the Lyceum Theatre, soDraculawould have taken preference. He also notes "We are planning to make a better edition on better paper and more attractively bound as soon as we can dispose of the copies we have on hand." The second piece of correspondence has a note at the top from EGC's son, Edward saying "This must be to Edy Craig - it was in her copy of the book 'in question.'" This hastily written letter from EGC to his sister is in regards to an unfavorable review of the book. Our best transcription: "Lend on your copy of the IH ET book to me will you - I want to take Master Rhodes to task. It's absolutely damnable. what I consider the best thing to counteract it. I've made another set of new drawings for another artsy American firm. Do you think Miss Marshal [sic] would do me a real good turn & write me 1/2 dozen pages large type about both IH & ET & Lyceum - to go in with the drawings? I want it by next Thursday at latest - I can lend her (?'s) 2 books - it would help - Don't you mention it to her if you think she's too busy or would not like to do it. Edward. Do you know Lady Corbet?" Quite interesting is the mention of Christabel Marshall (1871-1960), an English Suffragette and author, who lived with her fellow suffragette, Edith starting in 1899. Christabel was also a secretary to Ellen Terry. Edith, Christabel, and artist, Clare Atwood lived together in a polyamorous relationship from 1916 until Edith's death in 1947. This book and accompanying letters provide a fascinating look into the lives of the influential Craig family and their connections in the literary, theatre, and publishing worlds, and broader social movements at the turn of the century. Thin 4to, unpaginated. 19 mounted plates, some color tinted, and illustrated title. Tan paper boards with red lettering and green Gordon Craig monogram on front, publisher's insignia on rear. Spine mostly worn away with webbing exposed. Internally clean and complete. Laid in is a 21-line typed letter, signed and with hand corrections by the publisher, Herbert Stuart Stone, to Miss Eleen Terry, dated March 23, 1900 on Herbert S. Stone letterhead. Foxing, staining, and transmittal folds, with a small edge tear along one horizontal fold. Autograph letter signed "Edward" to his sister Edith, two 8x6.5" sheets of ruled paper, written in pencil on three sides. Toning, edge chipping, and transmittal folds.

Ellen Terry was considered the leading Shakespearean and comic actress in Britain as well as had much success in her American tours. Two of her most famous roles were Portia in The Merchant of Venice and Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing. Virginia Woolf?s was obsessed with this Victorian actress. She captivated many an artist and was painted by the famous John Singer Sargent in 1889 as Lady Macbeth, as well as by her first husband George Frederic Watts in 1864 in a portrait called Choosing She was a muse to many.??during that short time, she had the opportunity to meet many cultured, talented and important people, such as poets Robert Browning and Alfred, Lord Tennyson; Prime Ministers William Ewart Gladstone and Benjamin Disraeli; and photographer Julia Margaret Cameron. Two chatty and characteristic letters. ONE: 15 July [1953]. 2pp., 4to. On aged paper, with wear to edges and vertical closed tear at foot. She begins by praising his books 'Ladies First' (1952) and 'Shirtfronts and Sables' (1953), adding in an autograph note 'Yes I bought them when in London.' The first contains 'that wonderfully beautiful tribute to Ellen Terry. I don't know when I have read anything which moved me so deeply, you rose to great heights when you wrote that. You are beginning to run James Agate very close on my shelves'. She next turns to her books on Henry Irving and Ellen Terry: 'Did you read the Shaw-Terrty letters - [autograph note: 'Of course you did!'] they sent my blood pressure mounting sky high - his at least. What a stupid wind bag of a man, and how charming her letters were to him. It was the same with Mrs Patrick Campbell's letter to him and from him.' The rest of the letter contains references to 'dear Seymour Hicks', 'adorable Ella', and a trip on her birthday 'to Asolo where Duse lived': 'Oh, what a sad town, and the saddest of all the room in the little museum filled with her belongings - some photographs, one signed one of Ibsen looking furious with the world in general, some books, a few bits of rather paltry jewellry, and some dresses and shoes. There was the inevitable intense letter written by that cad d'Annunczio [sic] in his sprawling self satisfied writing'. She ends with an apology for 'this over long and - no doubt - badly spelt - letter', and with remembrances to 'Mrs "Mac.Pope"'. TWO: 5 August 1953. 1p., 4to. On aged paper, creased and with fraying along one edge. She is using the abbreviation to him that she also sends 'to Yvonne Arnaud and Julia Neilson': '"T.R.N.A." - in other words, this requires no answer'. She thanks him for information on 'the mirror act' which she saw 'years and years ago at the Middlesbrough Empire and the name on the bill was "The Wylie Brothers"'. She is pleased that 'Teddy Knox' remembers her: 'The last time I saw him was in Rome when I think he was bored stiff with St. Peters but full of admiration for the "Wedding Cake"'. She prefers Knox's wife [Clarice Mayne] to him and discusses the film that was to be made about her life.
