Juan de Herrera había sido ayudante de Juan Bautista de Toledo, autor de la traza general del monasterio de San Lorenzo del Escorial, hasta el fallecimiento de éste en 1567. Herrera preparó los planos de la basílica, cambiando la disposición diseñada por Toledo. Propició el empleo de elementos auxiliares de la construcción que podían hacer la obra más racional y económica. Diseñó el conjunto de cubiertas empizarradas del edificio con los chapiteles de estilo flamenco que Felipe II quiso importar de Flandes. Impresionaron al monarca la gran habilidad y perfección con que manejaba Herrera los cánones vitrubianos de la antigüedad en los diseños que hacía para la iglesia mayor de El Escorial, reflejo indudable de su preparación arquitectónica de sólida base filosófica./ TC.
