First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. London, crown octavo; 514, 597, and 343 pages respectively in the three volumes. Each volume contains plates and numerous text illustrations, plus publisher's catalogues. Alfred John Jukes-Browne (1851-1914) was a notable British invertebrate paleontologist, geologist and author. These three volumes are among his most important works, primarily intended for the general reader, but nonetheless full of important data and observations. Chapters in "Physical Geology" consider all the major topics related to the solid Earth: Earth structure, volcanoes, faults, earthquakes, and mountain building, glacial and stream erosion and deposition, minerals, varieties of rocks, and much more. There are striking illustrations of scenery, cross-sections of strata, mountains, erupting Hawaii volcanoes, caves, etc. "Historical Geology" deals with the ages of the Earth and geologic time periods. It is a handbook of the fossil life of each time period, providing fossil descriptions, geographic ranges, and splendid illustrations. The third volume documents the geologic history of the British Isles from a geographical and "geotectonic" viewpoint: examining the evolution of the landscape and noting the relative position of land and seas during the successive periods of geologic time. Fifteen full-page, partly colored plates and text illustrations add much to the text descriptions. ***CONDITION: All three volumes are complete and in near VG to VG+ condition. They are uniformly bound in the original embossed and decorated red cloth, with gilt titles on the backstrips. The covers are well preserved, with mild wear to some extremities. Backstrip to "Historical Geology" tender. Spine lettering typically bright. Joints and hinges just starting, but strong. The text pages are fresh, clean and bright, with no foxing or stains. These volumes are all from the same library, with blindstamps to the title pages, library numbers to preliminaries, etc. The third volume has a contemporary bookplate on the front cover, but that is the only external evidence of previous ownership. A nice set of scarce, sound, vintage volumes. BMNH 949-950. International shipping will be extra, but only at my cost.
