Jahrhunderts ist Jean Fautrier (1898-1964) eine singuläre Figur. Sein Werk beginnt Mitte der 1920er Jahre mit Stillleben und Akten in Schwarz auf schwarzem Grund, in den er in feinen Linien die Konturen der Gegenstände kratzt. In den drauffolgenden Bildern treten Blumen und Früchte zart und unbestimmt aus dem nun hellen Grund, als ob sie aus der Erinnerung an die französische Stilllebenmalerei des 18. Jahrhunderts gemalt wären. Vor allem der Auftrag für die Illustration von Dantes Inferno führen Fautrier Ende der 1920er Jahre zu einer eigenen Version der Abstraktion, die aus der malerischen Geste ebenso wie aus der Materialität der Farbe resultiert. Ab 1940 entwickelt Fautrier eine neue Form des Bildes, in dem die Materie an die Stelle des abwesenden Gegenstands tritt. Die Gruppe der Otages sollten ihn 1945 bekannt machen: Die Gesichtszüge der gemarterten Figuren lösen sich in der Materie auf - dies ist der Beginn der informellen Malerei. Ab 1955 kommt Fautrier mit erotischen Obsessionen und die vom Ungarn-Aufstand angeregten Têtes de partisan auf seine Grundthematik - Sinnlichkeit und Zerstörung - zurück. In dieser Publikation werden selten gezeigte Bilder aus privaten Sammlungen aus der Schweiz und aus Deutschland präsentiert, ergänzt durch Bilder aus Pariser Museen.
