Signed by author on title page. Marjorie Hudson was born in a small town in Illinois, grew up in Washington, D.C., and now lives in Chatham County, North Carolina. Hudson's stories, essays, and poems explore themes of loss, conflict, and a yearning for community deeply threaded through American history and contemporary life. Hudson's creative nonfiction book, Searching for Virginia Dare, was a North Carolina Arts Council Notable Book, and was reviewed and recommended by Our State magazine, North Carolina Literary Review, NC Library Journal, and the The Junior Tar Heel Historian. It has been a featured selection of the Reading on the Road book club at Bookwomen Center for Feminist Reading, and has been used in creative writing programs from East Carolina University's Masters to the MFA program at University of Alaska - Anchorage. In 1587 America's first English child was born in a remote island wilderness. They named her Virginia Dare. Soon after her birth, Virginia and more than a hundred men, women, and children disappeared, leaving a cryptic message carved on a tree. What became of that infant girl and her people, now known as the Lost Colony? In search of an answer, Marjorie Hudson wanders the back roads of North Carolina and Virginia in an aging Dodge Caravan with a satchel of research notes and a head full of memory and imagining. Amazed by abandoned farmhouses wrapped in kudzu, the Great Dismal Swamp "dripping with spotted snakes," the bones of the Jamestown colony, and the living nation of the Lumbee, Hudson discovers an epic story more complex and more deeply moving than she ever imagined. Weaving research and interview, memory and imagination, Hudson's tale is a spellbinding journey, an invitation to deep mysteries that lurk in the history of America and in ourselves. Founding Director Lonnie Bunch's deeply personal tale of the triumphs and challenges of bringing the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture to life. His story is by turns inspiring, funny, frustrating, quixotic, bittersweet, and above all, a compelling read. In its first four months of operation, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture surpassed one million visits and quickly became a cherished, vital monument to the African American experience. And yet this accomplishment was never assured. In A Fool's Errand, founding director Lonnie Bunch tells his story of bringing his clear vision and leadership to realize this shared dream of many generations of Americans. Outlining the challenges of site choice, architect selection, building design, and the compilation of an unparalleled collection of African American artifacts, Bunch also delves into his personal struggles--especially the stress of a high-profile undertaking--and the triumph of establishing such an institution without mentors or guidebooks to light the way. His memoir underscores his determination to create a museum that treats the black experience as an essential component of every American's identity. This inside account of how Bunch planned, managed, and executed the museum's mission informs and inspires not only readers working in museums, cultural institutions, and activist groups, but also those in the nonprofit and business worlds who wish to understand how to succeed--and do it spectacularly--in the face of major political, structural, and financial challenges.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Octavo, contemporary quarter morocco and marble boards lettered in gilt; with minor rubbing to extremities. Enlarged, illustrated "testimonial" edition "by One of the Fools; The Famous Romance of American History. New, Enlarged, and Illustrated Edition. To which is Added, by the Same Author, Part II. The Invisible Empire: A Concise Review of the Epoch on Which the Tale is Based." BAL 20348. A major presentation copy, inscribed: "Gen. Chester A. Arthur - Dear Sir: Allow me to present you this volume in testimony of my high esteem. Respectfully, A. W. Tourgée, Aug. 26th/80," on the front endpaper; with Arthur's library bookplate on the front pastedown ---- Throughout his long career, Tourgée advocated equal rights for African Americans. Born in Ohio, and educated at the University of Rochester, he enlisted in the Union army and saw action at Bull Run and Chickamauga. After the Civil War, Tourgée moved to North Carolina, where he became involved in Reconstruction politics. During his tenure as a Supreme Court judge, Tourgée effectively challenged the Ku Klux Klan. His appeals to Congress revealing the extent of white supremacist violence, helped speed passage of laws authorizing the use of federal troops against the Klan. After 1877, he returned to the North, where he expressed disappointment over the ultimate failure of Reconstruction in his autobiographical novel, "A Fool's Errand." Published anonymously in November 1879, "A Fool's Errand" sold more than forty thousand copies within six months. Like Harriet Beecher Stowe's fictional exposé on the plight of African Americans, "Uncle Tom's Cabin," Tourgée's 361-page muckraking novel achieved financial success and critical acclaim as a classic of unflinching social commentary. Encouraged by the accolades accorded "A Fool's Errand," Tourgée produced a second edition of the work, supplemented by 136 pages of documentary evidence based upon public records and eyewitness accounts. The testimonies regarding the motives, organization, activities, and victims of the Ku Klux Klan in the new section of "A Fool's Errand," entitled "The Invisible Empire," provoked further public outrage over human rights violations. The testimonial edition of "A Fool's Errand" was published less than two weeks before the Republican National Convention convened in early June 1880. It appeared with Tourgée's name on the title page. The surprise disclosure and "Invisible Empire" supplement served to further heighten interest in the bestseller and perhaps influence the convention's unprecedented endorsement of federal government-supported public education, an issue that Tourgée had long advocated. After Grant's third-term nomination proved unsuccessful, Tourgée backed the convention's compromise nominee James Abram Garfield, an acquaintance since childhood, and running mate Chester A. Arthur, the former collector of the Port of New York and lawyer, who had earlier defended the civil rights of free Blacks and fugitive slaves. Months after the Republican Convention, Tourgée presented Arthur with this copy of the testimonial edition of "A Fool's Errand" --- "in testimony of my high esteem." A historically significant copy of the most important fictional exposé on Reconstruction, with a most distinguished provenance. Inscribed by Author(s).
