Condition: Fair. First Edition.

Softcover. Condition: vg. First edition. Folio. Unpaginated [12 pages]. Stiff paper wrappers. Front cover with linocut illustration in red and black. Red lettering. The content of this extremely scarce dadaesque publication is credited to "Watt en Halfwatt", which were the Dutch nicknames for the Danish screen comedy duo known as Fyrtċrnet og Bivognen*. The text is comprised of slightly absurdist, obscure and/or cryptic modernist freeform poetry, often laid out in striking visual arrangements on the page, similar to concrete poetry. Very little is known about this strange publication, but it may have been published in very limited quantities on the occasion of a wedding, as there are multiple references throughout the text to bridegrooms, event halls, and wedding guests. It has also been assumed that the title, the issue number as stated, date, and/or content of the publication may be entirely fictitious, as there are no mentions of this periodical anywhere, in addition to the fact that almost no publication information is printed. There are no listing at all on OCLC. Text in Dutch. Wrappers with some light to minor creasing and rubbing to extremities. Light sunning towards the top of the front cover. Interior with minor sporadic water stains and smudges to a few page, as well as some creases. Wrappers and interior in very good condition overall. Extremely scarce. *The prolific duo "Fyrtċrnet og Bivognen" was composed of stage and screen comedians/actors Carl Schenstrĝm (18811942) and Harald Madsen (18901949), who starred in more than 50 comedies (often silent) together between 1921-1940.

With a handwritten leaf mentioning various owners of the book with the years 1860 and 1893. And a handwritten index of Bible texts. 'Necessary and timely warning against the community of Sodom's heinous sin and dreadful punishment, on the solemn Day of Thanksgiving, fasting and prayer of February 28, 1731. Derived and presented from Isaiah 1:vs. 9. compared with Ezekiel 16:vs. 49, 50.' Extensive exposition of the sin of Sodom and what it consisted of - unnatural lust was only one of its many aspects, arrogance and lack of compassion being just as important. According to Royaards, lustful excess led to lascivious and indecent behavior, and in the end men could only resort to sodomy as the last way to find satisfaction. In the early 18th century, homosexuality was widely regarded as a 'crimen nefandum' (a crime not to be spoken of). Silence was a strategy to prevent the spread of sodomy. Therefore, many Dutch were unaware of the existence of homosexuality in the early 18th century, and men preferring sex with men didn't recognize the danger. They might feel attraction or even love for other men, not realizing their proclivities were considered a mortal sin by some. And that with some reason, because an epidemy of shipworm plagued Holland as a seafaring nation. How could this be interpreted otherwise than as God's punishment for man's sin? Royaards felt compelled to speak out against sexual deviancy to counteract the recent sodomy spree, as he saw it. He compares Dutch society to Sodom and Gomorra and warns for divine retribution. Apparently he wasn't alone in his thoughts: in 1730-31 the Dutch Republic saw a steep increase in the persecution of sodomy, beginning with the infamous Utrecht Sodomy Trials, which would eventually lead to the trial of some 250-300 men, often resulting in execution, typically by strangulation. No other European country persecuted homosexuals with such vehemence.

First Edition. (Van der Linde, 16, 17, 19, 20; Coumont, B40.2)With the rare, engraved 1691 portrait of Balthasar Bekker created by Johannes Hilarides (1648-1725) entitled "Monothe-ist."[THIS DESCRIPTION HAS BEEN SHORTENED BECAUSE OF ABE SPACE REQUIREMENTS. FOR A FULL DESCRIPTION, PLEASE EMAIL.]De beoverde Weereld is one of the most important text of what Jonathan Israel recently termed the 'Radical' Enlightenment. It caused a furor when it was first published in Holland and the firestorm quickly spread to Germany, France and England - where the book was translated and published within three years of its original appearance in Dutch. Bekker was a Reformed pastor who had caught the infectious disease of 'philosophizing' after the manner of Descartes and Spinoza - which, more than anything else, meant the freedom to reconsider received doctrine in the light of reason. Bekker previously had encountered difficulties with two of this earlier published works - an unconventional adult catechism [1670] and a book confounding the prevailing superstitions about comets [1683] - (there had been three spectacular sightings between 1680 and 1682).But nothing Bekker had previously written prepared the local clergy - or northern Europe - for the book that he published in 1691. Picking up on suggestions originally made by Descartes and Spinoza, The Bewitched World argued lucidly and effectively against the popular belief in spirits and the power of the devil over human beings claiming such beliefs were insupportable either by reason or by a careful reading of the Bible. It has been claimed that Bekker's book was such an effective attack on these ideas that he all but single-handedly caused the demise of the witchcraft trials and devil-based persecutions that had plagued northern Europe for much of the 17th Century. While it is easy to exaggerate the impact of Bekker's book, it is clear that The Bewitched World was a seminal work in the undermining of superstition, an early and powerful blow against the authority of the Bible, a significant instrument for the weakening of the Church's hold on men's beliefs, and a primary contributor to the liberation of thought across northern Europe. Contemporary vellum binding with worn, all-but-illegible title handwritten on spine. Corners just a bit bumped and slightly sprung with half-a-dozen,horizontal, brown old abrasion line on the rear cover. As noted above, all four books have been hand-signed by Bekker ink. In Book 3, the pages are significantly browned from page 9 through page 110. A lovely first edition copy of one of the major works of the Radical Enlightenment. With printer's woodcut device on titlepages and large woodcut depicting the Oldenburg Horn (without the portrait as often). First edition. - The impact of Bekker's book, The Bewitched World, was a seminal work in the undermining of superstition, an early and powerful blow against the authority of the Bible, a significant instrument for the weakening of the Church's hold on men's beliefs, and a primary contributor to the liberation of thought across northern Europe. It caused a major scandal and in 1692 Bekker was removed from his office in Amsterdam by the synod of Alkmaar, because of heterodoxy. Together with Spinoza, Bekker is now known as one of the most important Dutch precursors of the Enlightenment.- (Age-browned).
