Bookseller's ticket John Penington & SonPhiladelphia, to front-free endpaper. This perennially popular handbook, originally published in 1660, ran through 12 editions by 1671 (the present edition) and a further ten editions were issued by 1696. Although the book is anonymous, it has been speculated for many years that one of the authors is Richard Allestree, a Royalist clergyman. Allestree was a canon of Christ Church whose loyalty was rewarded during the Restoration with the placement position of Chaplain to the King. In his lifetime, he was also credited with authorship of the influential "The Whole Duty of Man" (London: Garthwait, 1658) and "The Causes of the Decay of Christian Piety." The popular 17th-century guidebook, "The Gentleman's Calling" declared that elite men should find a calling in life. The author dispensed various advice on all parts of learning; the modern and learned languages, rhetoric, philosophy, mathematics, history, antiquity, morality and divinity. This insightful treatise discusses various attributes of men, namely those "advantages" of education, wealth, time, authority, reputation and appropriate conduct. The work was variously attributed to Lady Dorothy Pakington (d.1679), Richard Sterne (c.1596-1683), and Allestree's biographer, Bishop John Fell (1625-1686). Includes a section titled "Private Devotions" (pp. 167-176) with separate title with imprint London, 1663. Early edition of this manual for proper gentlemanly conduct and self-improvement. A good copy, complete with engraved extra title-page. Wing A1112A.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. In fair condition. Front board is a replacement and detached. Wanting of spine. Rear original board is desiccated and exhibits typical dry rot along edges. Spine's binding is exposed. Front fly leaf has been cut, previous owner's name in hand old. Second fly leaf has remands of pencil book sellers markings, chipped and toned. Text block shows typical toning with light edge wear and nominal foxing. Mid-gutter is shaken, binding is shaken overall. Free of marginalia. A readable copy. Please see photos. Two works in one volume. Variant vignette to title page depicting burning of St. Paul's by W. Holler and dated 1666. Richard Allestree was an English Royalist churchman and provost of Eton College from 1665. In 1642 he joined the king's army, under Sir John Bryon. When the parliamentary forces arrived in Oxford, he hid the Christ Church valuables, and the soldiers found nothing in the treasury "except a single groat and a halter at the bottom of a large iron chest". Allestree escaped severe punishment only because the army hastily retreated from the town. At the close of the English Civil War, he returned to his tidies, took holy orders, was made Censor and became a "noted tutor".

The text is usually attributed to the Royalist divine Richard Allestree (d.1681), although some speculate that the work was by the learned laywoman Lady Dorothy Pakington, whose private prayers composed during the Civil War and interregnum survive in Bodleian Oxford MS Add. B.58. The author of the dedicatory epistle, Dr Henry Hammond, had been chaplain to Charles I and was a guest of the Pakingtons following the regicide until his own death in 1660. Printed at the time of the Restoration of the Monarchy, The Gentleman's Calling offers its readers 'Religious and Prudent Instruction' (Epistle) in moral and philosophical matters, taking inspiration from the earlier The Whole Duty of Man (1657).
