Sans dust-jacket (the jacket's clipped blurb remains) CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR : Gilt lettering is bright; spine extremities are compressed and display a touch of abrasion and fraying (fraying just starting); boards have just a slight touch of weathering, but are essentially clean and display solid color; board corner tips are square. Bottom edges of boards display slight shelf wear. Text-block edges are slightly toned, else clean. BINDING : The leaves open easily, but the whole remains solid, with no detached or loose leaves. INTERIOR There are a small number of leaves with slightly dog-eared corner tips; paper throughout is lightly toned. Er überraschte die literarische Öffentlichkeit mit immer neuen, aufsehenerregenden Werken. Nach seiner Heimkehr zur Kirche war zunächst seine ?Lebensgeschichte Jesu Christi" (1921) Absage an seine Vergangenheit und Bekenntnis zugleich. Ihr folgten in den nächsten Jahren so großartige Werke wie seine Augustinus-Biographie (1929), ?Lebendiger Dante" (1932) und ?Ewiges Italien" (1937). In seinen ?Zeugen der Passion" (1938) nahm er die Beschäftigung mit dem Leben Christi wieder auf. Am Ende des grauenhaften zweiten Weltkrieges versuchte Papini durch ?Papst Cölestins VI. Briefe an die Menschen" (1946) seine Zeitgenossen aufzurütteln und zur Besinnung zu bringen. Sein umfangreiches Alterswerk ?Der Teufel" (1953) verursachte lebhafte Kritik. Als gigantisches Fragment hinterließ er bei seinem Tode das ?Weltgericht", das 1957 herausgebracht wurde. Papini mußte gegen Lebensende viele Jahre furchtbar leiden. Er hatte Augenlicht und Sprache fast völlig verloren und war gelähmt. Sein Geist aber blieb bis zuletzt von bewundernswerter Lebendigkeit. Er starb 1956 im Alter von 75 Jahren in Florenz. Papini war ein geborener Rebell, genialer Einzelgänger und mutiger Kritiker. Er bleibt einer der entscheidenden Anreger der modernen italienischen Literatur und hat darüber hinaus auf viele Schriftsteller anderer Länder gewirkt. Seinem Gedenken ist dieser Auswahlband aus seinem Gesamtwerk gewidmet.
