First edition. Illustrated with photogravure portrait, maps, and illustrations from photographs. 8vo, publisher's original dark green textured cloth with gilt medallion and lettering on upper board and gilt lettering on spine. xxvi, 587,8 ads. A fine bright copy, clean and with a minor bit of refurbishment at the front inner hinge. FIRST EDITION. As a Baptist missionary, George Grenfell first went to Africa in 1875. He was the first to prove the independent nature of the Mubangi, discovered the Ruki or Black River, found himself in contact with actual cannibals and discovered and named Grenfell Falls on the Mubangi. Meant as a companion volume to Sir Harry Johnston's; "George Grenfell and the Congo", this work concentrates on Grenfell's missionary efforts rather than his explorations. ".it is refreshing to recall the remembrance of this good man, a missionary in the purest sense of the word; who succeeded, as the messenger of peace, in irradiating the immense basin of the Congo by his itineraries and in endowing its geography with fixed points carefully determined by astronomical observations" (from his obituary in the Le Movement Geographic).

First edition, presentation copy to the typist of the work, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "This copy of the Life of Grenfell George is presented to Miss Ada Goodman by its author, in faithful appreciation of the obliging & expert manner in which she accomplished the somewhat difficult task of type-writing the manuscript for the press. May 1909". George Grenfell (1849-1906) was a missionary and explorer who was awarded the Patron's Medal by the Royal Geographical Society for his detailed account of his travels through Congo and Cameroon. Following Grenfell's death in Basoko, a town on the Congo River, the Committee of the Baptist Missionary Society commissioned Grenfell's former classmate and friend, Rev. George Hawker (1857-1932), to write this biography. Hawker heavily relied on accounts from Grenfell's friends and family. This included Grenfell's sister, Mary Rowe, and his second wife, Rosana Edgerley, who accompanied him on his travels. Loosely inserted is an advertising slip for the Congo Reform Association. Octavo. Photogravure frontispiece with tissue guard, 32 half-tone plates, colour folding map, illustrations to text, 8 pp. of advertisements to rear. Original green bead-grain cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, Royal Geographical Society's Patron's medal in gilt to front cover, edges trimmed. Cloth clean, extremities slightly bumped and rubbed, gilt bright, foxing to edges and outer leaves, occasionally affecting margins, browning to endpapers, a couple of small tears to folding map, not affecting printed area. A very good copy.

First edition, first impression, of this study of the work of the Cornish missionary and explorer George Grenfell, published two years after his death in Basoko from backwater fever. It comes with 496 illustrations from photographs and 14 maps, showing all aspects of Congolese culture and society. George Grenfell (1849-1906) was a Baptist missionary who travelled widely in central Africa and for whom "the loss of an eye in early life in no way impaired his energy" (ODNB). He was first sent to Cameroon in 1874, moving to the Congo in 1878, where he would establish a number of new mission stations. He explored many of the country's rivers, such as the Congo, Kasai, Sankuru, and Lulua, making contact with the Batwa tribe among others. In 1887 he was awarded the Patron's Medal by the Royal Geographical Society for his detailed account of his travels. Sixteen years later in 1903 he protested to King Leopold against consistent refusal of the Congo Free State authorities to allow further Baptist advance beyond Yakusu on the Upper Congo. This work is an account of Grenfell's activities in the Congo and Cameroon, based on the notes he left when he suddenly died. It covers anthropology, colonial and pre-colonial history, material culture, botany, and language. It was written by the colonial administrator Sir Harry Johnston (1858-1927), who was influential in many parts of the "scramble for Africa" and published roughly 40 books about the continent. Johnston used his own research to supplement Grenfell's, especially with his photographs and illustrations of the scenery of the island of Fernando Po. Johnston also included his views of the Congo Free State, paying attention to both its achievements and notorious misdeeds. N. W. Thomas, "Sir Harry Johnston on 'George Grenfell and the Congo'", Journal of the Royal African Society, vol. 8, no. 29, 1908. 2 vols, octavo. Sepia photogravure frontispieces with tissue guards, 6 maps (3 folding, one in full colour), illustrations from photographs and maps in text. Original black cloth, spines lettered in gilt, covers stamped with double-fillet border in blind, top edges gilt. Extremities slightly bumped and rubbed, foot of vol. II boards rather worn, some minor internal foxing, maps bright with light foxing and a few closed tears sympathetically repaired: a very good set.
