Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. INSCRIBED BY COPELAND on the front free endpaper as follows: "To my good friends | Mr. & Mrs. Block (?) | with the Season's Greetings | Frances Spalding Copeland | 1937." 8vo. 127p. Frontispiece black and white photo of Copeland in an evening gown. Blue cloth with gilt let…ters on the front cover and the spine and with a vignette in gilt on the front cover of the Copeland coat of arms. Very minor wear to extremities with nothing rubbed through, spine gilt very slightly dulled, cover gilt bright, else near fine to fine with no internal markings. Frances Spalding Copeland (1884-1943) was married to a U.S. Senator from New York, Royal Copeland, who was in office 1923-1938. This book describes life as a senator's wife, in particular the obligations of a hostess. I have been unable to identify the couple to whom the book is inscribed. "Out of my personal experiences there has developed in my mind a general feeling for the basic qualities that make entertaining a pleasure shared by both guest and hostess. For years it has been in my mind that a book about entertaining could be useful. .a book that calls attention to those qualities that make one a good hostess, a good guest, in the deeper sense of the words. Out of my year of observation of my own guests, of some very delightful hosts and hostesses, has grown the determination to set down my one conclusions." [excerpted from the book]. 8vo (140 x 190 mm). Ca. 100 ff. with five entries, written on rectos only. Full mottled calf by Hubert & Lerner, Vienna. All edges gilt. Anna Freud's guest book from Hochrotherd in the Vienna Woods, where she and her partner Dorothy Tiffany Burlingham had bought an old farmhouse as a weekend and holiday home in 1930. Several maj…or figures in the psychoanalytic movement signed the book: Sigmund Freud signed the first page, dating his inscription 26 July 1932 (with a three-word sentiment in German: "halb als Papa"). Marie Bonaparte (Princess George of Greece and Denmark), the French author and psychoanalyst, appears to have joined her together with Freud; her inscription bears the same date, and also carries a sentiment thanking the recipient for a good meal. After a hiatus of one leaf, Ernest Jones, Freud's lifelong friend and his biographer, signed the book, dated 24 August 1934, noting that it was "a souvenir of a delightful and eventful experience". - Max Halberstadt, the Hamburg photographer best known for his portraits of Freud, his father-in-law, signed on 2 February 1936: "Via Hochrotherd nach Johannesburg". A few months after this inscription, Halberstadt emigrated to South Africa; his wife and daughter followed him in August 1936. - René Laforgue, the French psychoanalyst, and his wife Paulette, conclude the series with a signature and sentiment (again in German) dated 30 September 1936: "Hier haben wir trotz Winter und Kälte Ruhe und Wärme gefunden" ("Here we have found peace and warmth despite the winter and the cold"). - In 1934, Anna Freud took over the chairmanship of the teaching institute of the Vienna Psychoanalytical Association from Helene Deutsch (who turned her back on Austrofascism the following year and emigrated with her family to the United States) and was also a member of its board. In February 1937, together with Burlingham and Edith Jackson, she opened a day nursery - the Jackson Nursery - on Rudolfsplatz in Vienna, from where the Freuds and Dorothy Burlingham emigrated to London via Paris at Whitsun 1938.

The guest-book for Werzer's famous Gasthof "zum Weißes Rössl" at Pörtschach am Wörthersee, now the home of the Brahms Haus Museum, containing six highly finished pencil drawings by Alexander Pock: 1) Mounted officer, with New Year's wishes for 1947, dated on 26 December 1946; 2) Bust-portrait of a feldmarschal, 23 March 1947; 3)… Two sailors, "on a cozy and beautiful afternoon" 20 April 1947; 4) Bust-portrait of a general "Before setting out for Carinthia" dated 11 May 1947; 5) Drum major, "drawn on a cozy Sunday afternoon" of 12 October 1947; and 6) Mounted bugler, dated 16 November 1947. Born in Znojmo, Moravia, now in the Czech Republic, Alexander Pock (1871-1950), became one of the most popular Austrian military, genre and portrait painters of his period. He studied at the Vienna Academy under Christian Griepenkerl and Carl Rudolph Huber, showing early enthusiasm for military subjects, with a special talent for equestrian portraits. He came to the attention of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who became an important patron, and provided many prestigious commissions for Pock. Immediately after Franz Ferdinand's assassination in Sarajevo and the outbreak of the First World War, Pock signed up as a war artist, working at the Front in Galicia, Transylvania, in the Krn (Isonzo) and South Tyrol. Pock had great facility as a sketch artist, quickly working up his studies from life into full studio paintings. His extremely naturalistic representations of horses was based on intensive studies from nature, spending many hours at the Spanish Riding School of Vienna. His clients were mainly of the court and aristocracy, especially the Bohemian nobility, and the military hierarchy, a clientele which was decimated by the war, forcing Pock to concentrate on developing new patronage among the bourgeoisie. But he never lost his love of the military and continued to produce images of the Austrian Army during the First Republic, work characterised by his painstaking accuracy, and meticulous rendering of detail, meaning that his work is considered a highly reliable source for historians of the period. Many of Pock's works are inevitably in private hands, but examples can be seen in Austrian Museums including the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum and Museen der Stadt Wien. For Pock see Thieme / Becker 27, Vollmer 3 Octavo. 6 pencil drawings by Pock. Original red three-quarter cloth, floral boards. A little rubbed, else very good.

1 vols. 4to. 1 vols. 4to. This elaborately bound volume of guest autographs was commissioned for the yacht Sheelah, owned by millionaire industrialist Charles Ross (1848-1913). Originally from Scotland, Ross emigrated to North America in 1868 and built a fortune as a railway engineer, settling finally in Montreal. In 1912, this…book was transferred to another yacht, the Glencain, previously the Liberty. Ross bought this magnificent yacht on the death of Joseph Pulitzer -- at a crew of 65 people, it was one of the largest in the world. The steam yacht Sheelah welcomed Commander Peary home off the coast of Sydney, Nova Scotia, the port from which he had originally departed the year prior. On September 20, 1909, the Sheelah put to sea carrying Mrs. Peary, her daughter, Miss Marie Peary, Robert E. Peary Jr, and friends, including Col. Borup, father of George Borup, one of the expedition members, and George Kennan, author, and John Kehl, the United States consul at Sydney. All have signed the book on September 20, 1909 under the heading: "On board 'Sheelah' to meet Commander Peary on 'Roosevelt' on their return from North Pole." Peary has signed the book on the following page, and has dated his signature September 21, 1909, just two weeks after reaching Indian Harbor, Labrador and announcing to the world that he had reached the Pole. In addition, the page prior to Peary's family includes signatures of H.L. Bridgman, Secretary of the Peary Arctic Club, and Frederick Cook, here identified in early pencil as "Correspondent for the London Times" rather than Peary's rival for a claim to the Pole. This book goes above and beyond the Peary provenance, however. Beginning on January 26, 1906, in Naples, where the book was likely purchased, it includes 35 leaves of signatures, including two Governor Generals of Canada, accounts of visits to Bermuda, St. Lucia, Monte Carlo, and Gibraltar. On Ross's death, the yacht was bought by Robert Houston, and the final entry in the guest book includes the signature of Edward Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII. Embossed and colored pictorial gilt binding featuring three pictorial panels in a figural acanthus border, gilt turn-ins, aeg. Signed.
