DESCRIPTION: No. 121 of a limited edition of probably fewer than 180 copies. Folio size 16 3/4 H x 11 3/4 W (421 x 200 mm), 326 pages. Publishers original binding of half beige linen with patterned paper over boards, printed label on spine, housed in a reddish-brown morocco-backed clamshell box lettered in gilt. Hand-colored photogravure frontispiece of Hunter's Mountain House plus 96 facsimiles on specially-made paper; 27 reproductions of early American watermarks made in imitation of the originals; and 42 full-size reproductions of old paper labels printed on paper made to emulate the original labels in Hunter's Paper Museum. The elegant type was designed by Dard Hunter, Jr., hand-set by Dard Hunter and printed with a hand press on handmade paper by Dard Hunter. Book is protected with thick (.003") archival clear Grafix Dura Lar dust wrapper. _____CONDITION: Fine condition (book). Slipcase has a tiny nick to edge of leather spine and small white mark at bottom of spine (see photos) but still in fine condition, however._____DISCUSSION: This edition is the magnum opus of Dard Hunter's Mountain House Press, the culmination of a lifetime of documenting the history of hand papermaking around the world. It contains far more illustrations and samples than any of his other books. The book is unique - the first and only book (up to that time) in the history of printing to be produced entirely by hand and by one person. Hunter and son not only made the type and paper by hand, but also printed it on a handpress and bound it entirely by hand. This book was recognized by the Grolier Club exhibit and publication 'A Century for the Century, 1900-1999' as one of the one hundred most significant private press books of the twentieth century._____NOTE: The book is extremely large and heavy (14 lbs.) and will require additional shipping charge domestically. International shipping cost using USPS International Priority EXPRESS Mail with tracking to most locations in Europe and the United Kingdom will be capped at $100 U.S. dollars. Shipping cost to more distant locations may incur additional cost.

Papermaking by Hand In India, New York: Pynson Printers, 1939.Quarto, copy No. 225 of an edition of 370, pp. 129, 2 (ad, colophon), numerous photogravure plates, 27 specimens of Indian paper, floral-patterned cloth boards quarter-bound in black calf with gilt lettering and blue rules to spine. Inscribed by Hunter on the free front endpaper to his friend Virginia Nye, and signed on the colophon by Hunter and Elmer Adler, the Pynson printer.Hunter wrote in his autobiography: "Mr. Adler and I would have preferred using Indian handmade paper for the text, but it was not suitable, being too uneven in thickness, texture and finish. We felt the Indians might resent the use of English-made paper, so . we decided upon Swedish handmade paper for both text and illustrations" (see My Life With Paper, p 208). He had no shortage of Indian paper, as this account of his visit to Kashmir indicates: "When the poverty-stricken papermakers were aware that we wished to purchase paper, they ran in all directions to their millhouses, each man returning with bundles of paper. . Each man wanted his paper to be used for specimens in my proposed book, and there was so much argument and controversy among the workers that we purchased all of the paper offered" (p. 181).
