Additional old folds for storage. Handwritten early Kentucky law license signed by Revolutionary War hero and Kentucky Founder Samuel McDowell. McDowell fought under the command of George Washington in the French and Indian War, as a Colonel of a regiment under the command of Nathaniel Greene during the Revolutionary War and was present at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. A founding trustee for what later became Washington and Lee University in Virginia and for the town of Danville, Kentucky, McDowell was appointed as one of three judges for the first district court in Kentucky at Harrodsburg. From 1782-1792, McDowell served as President for nine out of the ten conventions that lobbied for Kentucky statehood and drafted the first Kentucky Constitution. The Political Club of Danville, of which he was a founding member, first met in his home in 1786. During this same period, George Washington commissioned McDowell as Kentucky's first territorial federal judge. McDowell resisted bribery offers during the so-called Spanish Conspiracy and was a leading force for the admission of Kentucky as the 15th state in 1792. McDowell's signature is one of only two signatures, along with that of Convention clerk Thomas Todd, to appear on the original Kentucky Constitution drafted in Danville in 1792. Signed by Author(s).

Manuscript. Condition: Fine. PRECIS DOCUMENT REVIEWING OR WRITING UPON THE NERVOUS SYSTEM. From the estate of the world renowned bibliophile and antiquary, Sir Thomas Phillipps. THE ITEM: Undated and unsigned, though most certainly late 18th century early 19th century given the other dated documents in the file, in this precis, the author expounds on the nervous system. I am not quite sure if this is an essay by a medical student or a precis written by a doctor though it does appear pretty advanced writings for a student, though I could be wrong. Certainly this document is worthy of more research. Biographical Notes: SIR THOMAS PHILLIPPS (1792-1872). Born in 1792, Sir Thomas Phillipps from childhood was obsessed with the idea of obtaining virtually anything written or printed on paper, including cartloads of documents from wastepaper merchants and the entire inventories of booksellers. "I wish to have one copy of every book in the world," he declared to a friend. He very nearly succeeded. His collection ultimately grew to more than 100,000 books and at least 60,000 manuscripts. As a result of his extravagant purchases, Sir Thomas was permanently on the verge of bankruptcy and was constantly pursued by creditors. So many books arrived at his house that it was impossible to unpack his acquisitions much less keep pace with them. Visiting scholars, driven to distraction, would spend days hunting for an elusive text in the dusty heaps that filled every room. Because Sir Thomas has a morbid dread of fire, most of his collection was housed in coffinlike boxes that could be carted away quickly. Visitors to Middle Hill were struck too, by the presence of numerous logs, a ploy he used to lure beetles away from his books. As Sir Thomas relentlessly pursued his passion, the house itself began to crumble and its floors started to sag under the cast weight of hundreds of tons of paper. His neglect of Middle Hill was partly deliberate, however. Sir Thomas's chief enemy in life, James Halliwell, had married his daughter against his wishes. It appears that Halliwell was, in Sir Thomas' eyes, the worst kind of criminal, a book thief who had stolen valuable works from university libraries and even from his father-in-law. Having no sons, Sir Thomas was unable to prevent Halliwell from inheriting his estate. To ensure that his detested heir would never receive anything of value, Sir Thomas's solution was to allow Middle Hill to fall unto complete disrepair. He even went so far as to chop down and sell for lumber the centuries-old oak trees that lined the majestic mile-long drive to his home. In 1863 Sir Thomas decided to move - in order to accommodate his books. With the aid of 160 men, 103 wagonloads of books and papers drawn by 230 horses, the books were lumbered from Middle Hill top their new estate in nearby Cheltenham. It is said that for years afterwards the countryside was littered with the remains of carts that had collapsed under the sheer weight of the Phillipps collection. Sir Thomas continues to add to his library until his death in 1872. After Sir Thomas's death, his immediate family had no room for his collection. So vast was the library that although individual items and large sections were sold privately or through numerous auction sales, the Phillipps collection is still being sold more than a century after the death of its owner. In the course of its sales, many treasures have come to light. As late as 1964, part of the long-lost and unique medieval manuscript of the Roman poet Ovid's Metamorphoses appeared and was subsequently reunited with its other half at Magdalen College, Oxford. Once destined for destruction as worthless wastepaper, this and many other priceless works were saved by the single-minded obsession of the greatest bibliomaniac of all time. Autograph.

Purchase contract from a national real estate sale concerning mills (including the mill of Aidier) and dependencies to Joseph Bertrand de Chamousset, baron de Gilly, auctioned for 1745 francs: "Consiste en moulins et dependances de la contenance d'un hectare trente huit ares [.] Consistant en batimens, artifices, près, champs et placeage [.]". - The sale of sequestered national assets of "second origin" was meant both to sanction "enemies" and to resolve the financial crises caused by the Revolution. In 1802 Bonaparte had proclaimed the restitution of unsold emigrant properties. - Signed twice by the secretary general Palluel of the Prefecture of the Department of Mont-Blanc, countersigned and verified by an additional, unidentified hand. - The inserted loose leaf shows four acknowledged receipts for the next four of five instalments of 349 francs each, two of which are signed by the treasurer (receveur des domaines) Pierre Mayan, the other by an unidentified predecessor in that same office, dating from 1805 to 1807. - With several revenue stamps. Slight foxing and duststaining; small defects to margins.

The document reads in part: "I Ralph Heathcote, Minister Plenipotentiary of His Brittanic Majesty to the Courts of the Elector of Cologne, and to the Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel do hereby certify that EDWARD MAXWEll, of Finnebrogue, of the County of Down in Ireland, and Frances Herbert, Daughter of the late Rev. In 1748 Heathcote became curate of St Margaret's Church, Leicester, and vicar of Barkby in 1749. He moved in June 1753 to London, where he associated with John Jortin, Thomas Birch, Matthew Maty, and others, who met once a week to drink coffee and talk learnedly. In 1746 Heathcote published a Latin dissertation on the history of astronomy, Historia Astronomiæ sive de ortu et progressu astronomiæ. He produced two pamphlets anonymously: Cursory Animadversions on the Controversy in General (1752), and Remarks upon a Charge by Dr. Chapman (1752); and in the following year wrote a reply to Thomas Fothergill's sermon on the uses of commemorating King Charles I's martyrdom. In 1755 he wrote a controversial work: A Sketch of Lord Bolingbroke's Philosophy. In 1761, he became one of the main writers in the Biographical Dictionary of 1761. In 1767, Heathcote published an anonymous letter to Horace Walpole on the dispute between David Hume and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, which was attributed to Walpole himself. In 1771, he published anonymously The Irenarch, or Justice of the Peace's Manual; the third edition bore the author's name. The second and third editions have a long dedication to Lord Mansfield. In 1786, he produced a miscellany of anecdotes and dissertations, Sylva. In August 1750 Heathcote married Margaret Mompesson, a descendant of William Mompesson of Eyam, and attained financial independence.******. Signed by Author(s).

758 x 600 mm. Brown ink on vellum. With floral decorations in brown ink, heightened in red, green, and gold. Lacks the seal. Indulgences granted to the branch of the archconfraternity of the Gonfalone in Chaudes-Aigues in the diocese of Saint-Flour, Cantal, France, led by a procurator named Mathurin Lepaintre. A beautiful letter of indulgences based on the canon law concerning archconfraternities as found in the constitution of Clement VIII (7 December 1604). Odoardo Farnese grants the indulgences in his function as Cardinal protector ("urbis protector") of the Gonfalone. - Established in 1264, the Gonfalone fraternity was the most prominent group of white penitents. Members' obligations included participation in religious processions, medical care for the poor, burying the poor, giving dowries to poor girls, and, since they had been raised to the rank of an archfraternity by Pope Gregory XIII in 1579, ransoming Christian captives from the Papal States in Muslim countries. - The connection between the Farnese family and the Gonfalone, whose principal church Santa Lucia del Gonfalone is in close proximity to the Palazzo Farnese, dates back at least to Cardinal Alessandro Farnese (1520-89), Odoardo's famous uncle, who had been the patron of the art-historically important Oratorio del Gonfalone and personally oversaw the elaborate mannerist fresco decoration executed between 1569 and 1576. - Co-signed by the protonotary apostolic Paolo Mattei and two "custodians of archconfraternities" named Mario Mattei and Marcello Mutu, a Papal guard, a secretary named Giulio Olivetti, and the canon named Chaminade from Chaudes-Aigues, who also added a summary of the document in French. - Traces of folds affecting the text. With two holes where a seal had originally been attached, a small hole affecting the text and a slightly larger hole above Odoardo Farnese's signature. Somewhat soiled and creased. The signature of Odoardo Farnese affected by creases and discoloration.

Manuscript in ink on laid paper watermarked TM, 1 page, quarto (210 x 170 mm). [Brest], 'à bord [l'Astrolabe], le 10 juin 1785'. Headed 'pour L'astrolabe', and signed at the foot 'de Monti', the note comprises a short list of equipment that is required for the vessel: 'two rudder bars . a spike for the long ropes; three cramps for the hatch bars; three padlocks for the same; two dozen rings for the jib & sail lines [.]. The above-mentioned were not provided with the rest of the equipment' (our translation); two further signatures in the lower margin, 'Fraboulet' (previously an officer on the Astrée, commanded by La Pérouse in 1781) and 'Lelarge'(?); faint original folds, extremely well preserved. A tangible relic of theill-fated expedition of La Pérouse, 1785-1788. This previously unpublished document requesting various articles of equipment for L'Astrolabewas written on board the vessel by her second-in-command,French naval officer and navigator Anne-Georges-Augustin de Monti (1753-1788), a matter of weeks before the departure of the La Pérouse expedition from Brest. The objectives of this most famous of French expeditions, preparations for which had commenced in 1783 under the royal patronage of Louis XVI, were to carry out exploration and scientific research in the Pacific, and to investigate possibilities for the establishment of French colonies in the region. Under the command of Jean-François deGalaup La Pérouse, its two ships,L'Astrolabe and LaBoussole, departed Brest on 1 August 1785. The narrative of the voyage of LaPérouse in the Pacific in the years 1785-1788 remains one of the great mystery stories in maritime history. During the first two years of the expedition, intermittent reports of its progress were received in France; but in March 1788, when theAstrolabe andthe Boussole were observed sailing out of Botany Bay, it was to be the last time the ships were sighted by Europeans. A rescue mission under the command of d'Entrecasteaux was sent in search ofLaPérouse in 1791, but was unsuccessful. It would not be until 1826, when the English sandalwood trader Peter Dillon finally discovered relics fromL'Astrolabe andLa Boussoleon the island of Vanikoro in the Santa Cruz group in the Solomon Islands, that the tragic fate of the expedition was confirmed.
