He was first commissioned into the British Army in 1798 and rose to the rank of Major-General by 1819. In 1807, he was elected Member of Parliament for Perthshire, holding the seat until 1812. He served as a Gentleman of the Bedchamber from 1812 to 1832 and from 1813 to 1819 was also aide-de-camp to the Prince Regent. He was created Baron Glenlyon, of Glenlyon, Perthshire, on 17 July 1821, and was promoted Lieutenant-General in 1837. Signed by Author(s).

British General; joined the army in 1740, serving in the West Indies and Europe; went to Canada as an army officer in 1757, prominent at the siege of Louisburg (1758) and in crucial battle on the Plains of Abraham; Given command of Quebec and withstood the efforts of the French; made military governor of Quebec; after the Treaty of Paris (1763) became (1764) the first civil governor of Canada (called the Province of Quebec); His efforts to protect the French Canadians prepared the way for the Quebec Act (1774). Note at head of page in a third contemporary hand: 'Copied for Col. the Rt. Hon. Chas. Yorke - 14/7/7'. The circular states that 'Clothing for the next Year may be immediately provided', with any not wanted by a certain date ('from a Decrease in the Number of Supernumeraries') 'to be considered as public Stores'. Endorsed in the third hand: 'War Office 1807 / Secy. of War. July 10 / Clothing for 1808 / [Co]py made out for Col. Yorke / [1]4/7/7'.
