Condition: Gut. pp. 623-625. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author to W. Haase. - Slightly bumped, author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise clean. - From the text: No ancient reference exists to the work which is known in the manuscripts as Historiae Alexandri Magni Macedonis or to a Quintus Curtins Rufus as the author of such a history. Thus any attempt to date Curtins history must depend on internal evidence, of which there is precious little. In fact at only one point in the extant portions of his work does Curtius indulge in a specific reference to the times and circumstances in which his narrative was composed. It takes the form of imperial panegyric, interjected to contrast the fate of the Macedonian empire after the death of Alexander with the prosperous state of the contemporary Roman commonwealth. - Wikipedia: Jesse Rufus Fears (March 7, 1945 October 6, 2012) was an American historian, scholar, educator, and author writing on the subjects of Ancient history, The History of Liberty, and classical studies. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author to W. H. - Folded across, author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: The roster of Aristotles modern editors and commentators who have had little if anything to say about the discussion of the pade at 'Rhetoric II 2 - 11 is as depressing as it is impressive, for it includes almost all of them. Beginning somewhat arbitrarily with W. Holwells 1759 text with commentary, one can go on to read through the pertinent works of Brandis (1849), Bonafous (1856), Vahlen (1861), Spengel (1867), Volkmann (1885), F. Marx (1900), O. Kraus (1907), and Adolph Kantelhardt (1911), and find suprisingly little space or consideration given to II 2 - 11. E. M. Cope dispenses with all ten chapters in something less than a full page of his 'Introduction; and in his 'Commentary seems satisfied, at least for the most part, to accumulate dubious parallels from Cicero, Quintilian, and Marius Victorinus and to gloss passages occasionally by referring us to, of all things, Alexander Bains 'Emotions and the Will, a work which amounts to little more than a new wrinkle on the Faculty Psychology of the Age of Reason. The work no longer exists, but its title is reminiscent of Metaph. 983 b 6ff., cf. tón de próton philosofesánton, where Aristotle describes Thales as "the founding father (árchegós) of this kind of philosophy", i.e. the philosophy of those who acknowledged only the "material cause", and who, in Aristotle's opinion, first deserved the name of philosophers. Haase. - Author's name handwritten on first page, otherwise a very good and clean copy. - From the text: Senecas essay de Clementia, addressed to Nero, begins with an imperial panegyric in the form of a soliloquy placed in the mouth of the young princeps. Nero introduces his monologue with the emphatic and rhetorical question: Egone ex omnibus mortalibus placui electusque sum qui in terris deorum vice fungerer? He then answers with the ringing affirmation: Ego vitae necisque gentibus arbiter. 'In my hands, to paraphrase the young princes remarks, 'are the fortunes of men and commonwealths. With my good will, peoples and cities prosper; without it nothing anywhere can prosper. Yet given all this power, I have governed well and justly. If on this very day, the gods should demand a reckoning from me, I am prepared to render an account for the whole human race. - Wikipedia: Jesse Rufus Fears (March 7, 1945 October 6, 2012) was an American historian, scholar, educator, and author writing on the subjects of Ancient history, The History of Liberty, and classical studies. HUTCHINSON refuses to see any significance in this: »for the people - though not for individuals - kadmeioi or the like is in verse the normal designation«. Is he right? In the first place it should be observed that it is not only to the people of Thebes that »Kadmos«-type names are applied in Seven. The people are indeed thus designated in three passages (1,39,303); but in seven other places similar expressions are used in reference to the actual town (9,47,74,120,136,531,823), and in 543 and 679 the reference is respectively to a single individual citizen and to many individual citizens, to the total exclusion of the names [thivi, thivai, thivaios]. How does this compare with the regular practice of tragedy? We have for comparison the three Theban plays of Sophocles and the Suppliants and Phoinissai of Euripides. Reprint. Condition: Gut. pp. 53-78, 2 fig. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author to W. Haase. - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: When Friedrich Gottlieb Welcker, almost 22 years old, arrived in Rome November 1st 1806, he was well prepared in Greek and Latin to absorb and digest the innumerable impressions which the urbs aetema had in store for its visitors. As a young boy, Welcker had read all the classical school authors, first with his father, later with private tutors, and he had been instructed in ancient history and mythology; Welcker also claims that he studied Greek and Latin texts on his own. He describes his instruction as follows: Die Lectionen waren cursorisch; doch wurde es mit dem Wortverständniss genau genommen und die Grammatiken, erst die Langesche, dann die Rampachsche und Wencksche, waren immer zur Hand. In 1801 Welcker registered in the Faculty of Theology in the University of Giessen; he took courses in a variety of subjects, but no classics worth mentioning because none were offered. He had a plan to go to Halle and study with F. A. Wolf but was forced to give it up for lack of money and accepted a position at the Pädagogium in Giessen after two years at the university. In December 1803 Welcker received his doctorate with his dissertation Exercitatio philologica imaginem Ulyssis quae in Iliade exstat adumbrans. As a Privatdozent he had to limit himself, mainly, to theological subjects, but he did manage to lecture on Platos Symposium. He also translated a number of Greek poetic texts, and published an academic program on Pindars Olympian I. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
