Condition: Very Good. Softcover, 328 pages. This unique collection of essays, published together for the first time, not only elucidates the complexity of ancient Greek thought, but also reveals Karl Popper's engagement with Presocratic philosophy and the enlightenment he experienced in his reading of Parmenides. As Karl Popper himself states himself in his introduction, he was inspired to write about Presocratic philosophy for two reasons - firstly to illustrate the thesis that all history is the history of problem situations and secondly, to show the greatness of the early Greek philosophers, who gave Europe its philosophy, its science and its humanism. Light pencil marking to 8 pages. Record # 386710.

Reprint. Condition: Gut. pp. 53-78, 2 fig. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author to W. Haase. - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: When Friedrich Gottlieb Welcker, almost 22 years old, arrived in Rome November 1st 1806, he was well prepared in Greek and Latin to absorb and digest the innumerable impressions which the urbs aetema had in store for its visitors. As a young boy, Welcker had read all the classical school authors, first with his father, later with private tutors, and he had been instructed in ancient history and mythology; Welcker also claims that he studied Greek and Latin texts on his own. He describes his instruction as follows: Die Lectionen waren cursorisch; doch wurde es mit dem Wortverständniss genau genommen und die Grammatiken, erst die Langesche, dann die Rampachsche und Wencksche, waren immer zur Hand. In 1801 Welcker registered in the Faculty of Theology in the University of Giessen; he took courses in a variety of subjects, but no classics worth mentioning because none were offered. He had a plan to go to Halle and study with F. A. Wolf but was forced to give it up for lack of money and accepted a position at the Pädagogium in Giessen after two years at the university. In December 1803 Welcker received his doctorate with his dissertation Exercitatio philologica imaginem Ulyssis quae in Iliade exstat adumbrans. As a Privatdozent he had to limit himself, mainly, to theological subjects, but he did manage to lecture on Platos Symposium. He also translated a number of Greek poetic texts, and published an academic program on Pindars Olympian I. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
