Il s'agit du 370e livre imprimé par les Éditions de Rivières initiées en 2002 par Jean-Paul Martin, petit cousin de Pierre André Benoit, dans la continuité de la philosophie éditoriale de l'artiste alésien. Magnifique hommage poétique de René Pons, écrit à Gajan le 24 mars 2005, et plastique de Daniel Dezeuze, inspiré de la calligraphie extrême-orientaliste, à l'art du peintre et graveur japonais Utawaga Hiroshige (1797-1858), représentant avec Hokusaï de l'ukiyo-e. Extrait : "Comme Hiroshige ne garder que l'essentiel Entourer de ses mots le vide L'esquisse ouvre l'infini fulguration d'un éclair d'encre [.]" L'écrivain René Pons est né près de Montpellier en 1932. Après deux années d'étude de Médecine et deux licences de Lettres, il enseigne dans le secondaire puis, ami de longue date des peintres du groupe Supports-Surfaces et de quelques autres, il enseigne pendant une quinzaine d'années à l'Ecole des Beaux arts de Nîmes. Il a écrit plus d'une quarantaine d'ouvrages et de nombreux livres d'artistes dont une soixantaine pour les Éditions de Rivières. Né en 1942 à Alès, dans le Gard, Daniel Dezeuze passe sa jeunesse à Montpellier où il étudie à l'école des Beaux-Arts. Entre 1961 et 1967, il voyage au Canada, au Mexique et aux Etats-Unis où il découvre les uvres des peintres abstraits de l'après-guerre ainsi que les cultures indienne et nomade. De retour en France, il s'installe à Paris et démarre alors sa véritable carrière artistique avec la série des Châssis, qui témoigne d'une recherche commune aux démarches plastiques de l'époque, à savoir la déconstruction des supports et des matériaux traditionnels de la peinture. À partir de 1968, il est l'un des fondateurs du groupe Supports/Surfaces et il crée l'année suivante avec Vincent Bioulès, Louis Cane et Marc Devade la revue Peinture, Cahiers théoriques, revue de référence pour les membres du groupe et le débat critique de ce temps. Tous travaillent à la « déconstruction » du tableau, appréhendé en tant qu'objet. Ils mettent en avant le matérialisme des uvres, l'importance du processus de création et remettent en cause l'idéalisme pictural. Les oeuvres de Dezeuze, comme en témoigne son intervention dans le livre de PAB, L'espace à l'avant, que nous présentons ici, sont composées de matériaux pauvres, hétéroclites et parfois inattendus : treillages, filets à papillons, valises, trombones ici, évacuant la figure. Daniel Dezeuze a réalisé vingt livres d'artiste pour les Éditions de Rivières sur des textes originaux de sa composition, de PAB, René Pons, Gaston Puel, Francine Marc, Claude Minière et Bernard Teulon-Nouailles. Tous sont présentés dans notre catalogue et témoignent du foisonnement de ses recherches plastiques. De toute rareté. Signé par l'illustrateur.

Bound in publisher's textured cream paper-covered boards over quarter art vellum, titled and ruled in gilt, color pictorial endpapers, blue ribbon marker. Near Fine with light wear and yellowing to covers, several small chips to upper and lower board edges, and light bleed-through from glue used to affix prints. Contents lightly toned, binding tight. In a possibly original acetate jacket, clouded and yellowed and somewhat chipped at fold ends. An exquisite and lovingly-designed book by the Australian bookplate collector Percy Neville Barnett. Barnett took great care over the twenty or so limited edition books he published, pasting the prints in himself. Hiroshige is a paean, half in verse, to the great ukiyo-e master renowned for his landscapes and night scenes: "Made the whole world seem more mellow / With your lovely soothing color / Hiroshige! Hiroshige!".

Signed limited edition, number 119 of 200 copies signed and numbered by the author, stamped with his red Japanese seal, and illustrated with 20 Japanese prints. For his exquisite publications, "Barnett chose the best materials available: he procured type-fonts from Germany, used hand-made paper, and imported vellum from England, board from Scotland, silk from China and brocade from Japan" (ANB). The New Zealand-born Percy Neville Barnett (1891-1953) devoted the first half of his life to the study of bookplates, publishing several limited editions on the subject. In the 1930s, he turned his attention to Japanese woodblock printing, employing "40,000 prints and specially designed endpapers from Japan for a series of charming books including Japanese Colour-Prints (1936), Colour Prints of Hiroshige (1937), Hiroshige (1938), Figure Prints of Japan (1948) and Japanese Art (1953). Barnett not only wrote the text; he also designed and published each work, and signed and numbered each copy of his limited editions. A perfectionist at a time when the second-rate satisfied many people. his books were printed in Sydney at the Beacon Press, whose proprietor H. P. Mortlock was a dedicated craftsman" (ANB). Provenance: Lady Zara Eileen Gowrie (1879-1965), "a woman ahead of her time, renowned for her work in promoting the welfare of children in Australia". During her husband's tenure as Australia's governor-general, she "lobbied extensively for the establishment of [wellbeing] centres across Australia. Starting from around 1939, the Lady Gowrie Child Centres in the state capital cities were established by the Commonwealth Government" (Gowrie New South Wales online biography). On the first blank is a presentation bookplate from the Malayan Research Bureau thanking Gowrie for her patronage of the organization. Octavo. Original vellum-backed cream boards, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, decorative endpapers, edges untrimmed, blue silk bookmarker. With acetate jacket. Cette lettre a été retranscrite dans l'article de Pierre Michel et Christian Limousin intitulé "Octave Mirbeau et Paul Signac - Une lettre inédite de Signac à Mirbeau" (inCahiers Octave Mirbeau, n° 16, mars 2009, pp. 202-210). "Mon cher Maître, Cela vous ennuirait-il [sic]d'écrire à Mirbeau qu'un Signac, à votre avis, ne ressemble pas plus à un Seurat qu'un Hokousai à un Hiroshigé. si toutes fois (sic) le reproche d'imitation dont il cherche à m'accabler vous semble injuste. L'amitié que vous m'avez toujours témoignée et les compliments que vous avez bien voulu faire de mes toiles, m'autorisent à vous demander ce service. Cordialement. PS" Belle lettre dans laquelle Paul Signac cherche l'appui de son maître Camille Pissarro après une critique acerbe publiée par Octave Mirbeau dansL'Echo de Paris. Dans ledit article, le premier à la Une de L'Echo de Paris du 23 janvier 1894, Octave Mirbeau n'épargne en effet pas Signac: «M. Signac a voulu continuer Seurat. Je ne puis me faire à sa peinture. Je ne méconnais pas ses qualités mais elles disparaissent sous l'amoncellement de ses défauts. Ce qu'on admettait de Georges Seurat [.] on le comprend moins chez M. Signac qui n'en est que l'adepte trop complaisant et trop littéral. Et puis cette continuelle sécheresse me choque. M. Signac fait la nature immobile et figée. Jamais le vent n'a secoué la surface inerte de ses mers, ni tordu les branches de ses pins, ni animé l'éternelle fixité de ses nuages, la raideur cartonnée de ses ciels. Il ignore le mouvement, la vie, l'âme qui est dans les choses. [.] Il serait peut-être temps, pour notre joie, que M. Signac voulût bien nous donner du Signac. Je crois qu'il le peut.» Pourquoi cette obsession pour Seurat? «En ce début d'année 1894, la position de Mirbeau, de Geffroy, de Pissarro et que quelques autres, est de considérer que le néo-impressionnisme est bel et bien mort en 1891 avec la disparition de Seurat.Le regard rétrospectif qu'ils jettent sur cette aventure artistique les conduit à penser qu'il ne s'agissait nullement d'un prolongement, d'une continuation de l'impressionnisme par des voies nouvelles (scientifiques), mais bien d'une réaction contre lui, voire d'une liquidation pure et simple du mouvement.» (Cahiers Octave Mirbeau). La réponse de Pissarro à Signac, elle-même transcrite par Michel et Limousin, ne se fait pas attendre: cela «[l]'ennuirait d'écrire ce que vous me demandez à Mirbeau, et cela pour plusieurs raisons. [.] Premièrement parce que je suis en froid avec lui, vous le savez bien. Deuxièmement parce que, pour vous-même, il ne sied pas de discuter l'opinion d'un critique, même étant persuadé d'être dans le vrai, et, si vous voulez franchement ma façon de penser et que je suis heureux d'avoir l'occasion de vous exprimer, je trouve que la méthode même est mauvaise. Au lieu de servir l'artiste, l'ankylose et le glace. Si je vous ai fait des compliments cette année, c'est parce que j'ai trouvé vos dernières toiles mieux que celles que vous aviez exposées aux Indépendants, mais je suis loin de trouver que vous êtes dans la voie qui convient à votre tempérament essentiellement peintre et si, jusqu'à présent, je ne vous ai rien dit à ce sujet, c'est parce que j'étais sûr de vous être désagréable et, somme toute, mes convictions peuvent ne pas être partagées par vous. Réfléchissez mûrement et voyez si le moment n'est pas venu de faire votre évolution vers un art plus de sensation, plus libre et qui serait plus conforme à votre nature.» «Dépité, et privé de l'autorité d'un maître vénéré par le critique, Signac en est réduit à élaborer lui-même, et sans plus attendre, la réponse à adresser à Mirbeau [.]» (ibid.)
