Cloth, gilt cover-title in decorative border, oblong 4to, xiii, [1], 118 pp, 92 ills. From the blurb: "Jacques Callot was a French engraver and etcher whose reputation was first made under the patronage of Cosimo II de'Medici in Florence. There he created his brilliant illustrations of the theatre, which depicted the formal tragedies, intermezzi, and operatic works of the ducal court, the familiar and not-so-familiar characteristics of the commedia dell'arte, the theatre of the streets, the fairs, the mountebanks, the troupes of deformed dwarfs, and the elaborate allegorical wagons of the Florentine festivals. Regardless of his subject, Callot always succeeded in capturing and recreating the drama of each scene. After carefully examining all of Callot's prints, Mr. Kahan has selected ninety-odd pieces which he distinguishes as theatrical because each depicts a theatrical presentation, its performers, the stage on which it is presented, or the audience in attendance. Accompanying these illustrations are the author's analysis of Callot's iconography and his succinct study of the relationship of Callot's art to the theatre. Callot's illustrations and Mr. Kahan's commentaries combine to form a rich source of information on such varied theatrical subjects as bodily postures, physical staging, setting, properties, musical instruments, and audience behavior. Indeed the two include almost everything the historian would need to re-create the theatrical moment." Contents: Preface; 1. Introduction; 2. The Commedia dell'Arte; 3. Festivals; 4. The Court Theatre; 5. Miscellaneous; 6. Afterword; Appendix; Notes; Selected Bibliography. Very Good in a used and edgeworn dustwrapper.

Illustrated printed wrappers, 4to, 28 cm, unpaginated (approximately 32 pp), ills. From the foreword: "It is with great pleasure that we present this exhibition tracing the influence of the theatre on the art of the great French printmaker, Jacques Callot. While the connections between the spectacle and Callot's art have long been acknowledged, there appears to have been no prior exploration of this theme in the format of an exhibition. The present offering seeks to demonstrate this important relationship as well as to remind the viewer anew of Callol's brilliant contribution to the graphic arts. The exhibition has been organized by students in the Krannert Art Museums Museum Studies Program. " Short closed tear to upper edge of one leaf, minor mark to front wrapper, otherwise Good.
